MUMBAI: In a huge relief to students of ILS Law college in Pune barred from appearing for their semester-end law exams in the academic year 2025-26 for attendance shortfall, Bombay high court on Monday permitted them to appear for the exams as a “strictly one-time measure’’. Justices Riyaz Chagla and Farhan Dubash relied on a recent July 21 Supreme Court order that permitted students as a one-time relief to appear for their examinations in the academic year 20-26.The HC clarified that its relief would apply to all similarly barred students of the college who had not filed petitions, as it said the SC order had carved out similar placed students as a “protected class’’. But the bench clarified its order was “confined to the academic session 2025–26’’.The HC said its order cannot be construed as diluting the attendance rules for any other academic session. “Students pursuing legal education shall continue to remain bound by the attendance requirements otherwise applicable to them,’’ the bench said.The HC order came in a batch of petitions filed by 41 students pursuing different years of the 3-year and 5-year law courses conducted at ILS, Pune affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University. The University said their attendance was tween 46 to 54 % while minimum attendance was 75 %.The petitions said an earlier 70 % rule with 20 % additional waiver rule ought to apply to them and also cited a November 3 2025 Delhi HC order to argue their case.The Delhi HC High Court directed that no student enrolled in a recognised law college in India should be detained or prevented from appearing for examinations or from pursuing academic progression solely on account of shortage of attendance.The SC then stayed the Delhi HC order, prospectively in May. But in July protected students across colleges against a lost academic year of 2025-26, with a one-time reprieve to appear for the final exam in that academic year when the Delhi HC order was passed. The SC order does not prescribe any minimum attendance for the protected class of last academic year student, HC noted.On Monday, disposing of the batch of petitions the Bombay HC clarified that the Delhi HC order did not bind it, but the July SC order did.Six different HCs had differed with Delhi HC.The Pune University and the law college argued that the SC order would apply only to final examination students of the 3 year and 5 year LLB courses. This issue is left open.The HC had earlier granted interim protection to the Petitioners who appeared for their examinations and confirmed the relief. NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday slammed Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for claiming that standing through the full rendition of Vande Mataram pushes the limits of human endurance.BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan said that Tharoor’s remark was at odds with the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who gave their lives for the country’s independence while uttering “Vande Mataram.””Senior Congress leader states that the full original rendition of Vande Mataram, which takes 3 minutes and 10 seconds, is too lengthy for people to stand through respectfully and patiently,” Kesavan said in a social media post on X.”Is this not extremely ironic coming from the servile Congress party, which for more than 75 long years has patiently and sycophantically been kowtowing to the Nehru-Gandhi first family. Such callous remarks deeply dishonour and disrespect the selfless sacrifices of generations of freedom fighters who patriotically gave up their lives uttering “Vande Mataram” for our nation’s independence,” he added.Kesavan also accused Congress of showing disdain towards the song, claiming that the hesitance stems from appeasement politics and discomfort with traditional national symbols.”From Nehru’s Congress which truncated Vande Mataram to Rahul Gandhi, bitter disdain and antipathy of the Congress party against Vande Mataram persists. In a letter dated June 21, 1948, to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Jawaharlal Nehru with his Macaulay colonial mindset said Vande Mataram’s tune was not suitable for foreign orchestra and bands. Nehru demeaned Vande Mataram stating it was unfit to be our National Anthem,” the BJP spokesperson said.”We are truly thankful to PM @narendramodi ji for restoring the respect and honour of Vande Mataram and making sure it is rendered in its glorious original form at public events – and for the first time ever at the Red Fort this Independence Day. PM Modi ji has ensured a fitting tribute to the generations of brave heroes and heroines who selflessly sacrificed for our nation’s freedom,” he added.Earlier in the day, Tharoor questioned the practical implications of the Vande Mataram amendment, saying the requirement to sing the National Song in full at official functions could result in audiences standing for several minutes before and after events.In a post on X, Tharoor said the President had assented to the amendment, which was passed in Parliament without discussion. He said the amended provision requires the full National Song to be sung at the beginning and end of official functions, in addition to the National Anthem.”The President has assented to the #VandeMataram Amendment, passed without discussion in Parliament, which requires the singing of the National Song in full at the start and ending of any official function, in addition to the National Anthem.”As one who greatly respects both, and can sing the first two stanzas of the former (but not the other four, which were never required till now) as well as the entire anthem, i would like to point to just one practical consideration our zealots appear to have overlooked: human nature,” Tharoor added.”‘Jana Gana Mana’ requires audiences to stand respectfully and focus their attention for a reasonable 52 seconds. The National Song in full takes 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Tamil Nadu has just decided that both will be preceded by the State Song in Tamil for another 2 minutes. Do we really expect audiences to stand still and respectfully for six minutes before and after every function, a total of 12 extra minutes? Can respect and patience be legislated? NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday slammed Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for claiming that standing through the full rendition of Vande Mataram pushes the limits of human endurance.BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan said that Tharoor’s remark was at odds with the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who gave their lives for the country’s independence while uttering “Vande Mataram.””Senior Congress leader states that the full original rendition of Vande Mataram, which takes 3 minutes and 10 seconds, is too lengthy for people to stand through respectfully and patiently,” Kesavan said in a social media post on X.”Is this not extremely ironic coming from the servile Congress party, which for more than 75 long years has patiently and sycophantically been kowtowing to the Nehru-Gandhi first family. Such callous remarks deeply dishonour and disrespect the selfless sacrifices of generations of freedom fighters who patriotically gave up their lives uttering “Vande Mataram” for our nation’s independence,” he added.Kesavan also accused Congress of showing disdain towards the song, claiming that the hesitance stems from appeasement politics and discomfort with traditional national symbols.”From Nehru’s Congress which truncated Vande Mataram to Rahul Gandhi, bitter disdain and antipathy of the Congress party against Vande Mataram persists. In a letter dated June 21, 1948, to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Jawaharlal Nehru with his Macaulay colonial mindset said Vande Mataram’s tune was not suitable for foreign orchestra and bands. Nehru demeaned Vande Mataram stating it was unfit to be our National Anthem,” the BJP spokesperson said.”We are truly thankful to PM @narendramodi ji for restoring the respect and honour of Vande Mataram and making sure it is rendered in its glorious original form at public events – and for the first time ever at the Red Fort this Independence Day. PM Modi ji has ensured a fitting tribute to the generations of brave heroes and heroines who selflessly sacrificed for our nation’s freedom,” he added.Earlier in the day, Tharoor questioned the practical implications of the Vande Mataram amendment, saying the requirement to sing the National Song in full at official functions could result in audiences standing for several minutes before and after events.In a post on X, Tharoor said the President had assented to the amendment, which was passed in Parliament without discussion. He said the amended provision requires the full National Song to be sung at the beginning and end of official functions, in addition to the National Anthem.”The President has assented to the #VandeMataram Amendment, passed without discussion in Parliament, which requires the singing of the National Song in full at the start and ending of any official function, in addition to the National Anthem.”As one who greatly respects both, and can sing the first two stanzas of the former (but not the other four, which were never required till now) as well as the entire anthem, i would like to point to just one practical consideration our zealots appear to have overlooked: human nature,” Tharoor added.”‘Jana Gana Mana’ requires audiences to stand respectfully and focus their attention for a reasonable 52 seconds. The National Song in full takes 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Tamil Nadu has just decided that both will be preceded by the State Song in Tamil for another 2 minutes. Do we really expect audiences to stand still and respectfully for six minutes before and after every function, a total of 12 extra minutes? Can respect and patience be legislated? The airline’s outgoing CEO Wilson Campbell is set to have met govt officials over the incident NEW DELHI: Air India’s outgoing CEO reportedly met government officials on Tuesday amid the ongoing row after the Delhi-Phuket flight turbulence incident.The airlines’ outgoing CEO Campbell Wilson met senior officials of MoCA and DGCA regarding the flight that suddenly lost about 300 feet of altitude last week, reported ANI, citing sources.However, Reuters reported, citing sources that the civil aviation ​minister has ​summoned the CEO. No confirmation has come from the airlines or the government.The meeting comes a day after the government advanced a probe into the incident, which involved the Airbus A320 suddenly losing about 300 feet of altitude during the flight. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has classified the incident as serious and is examining the circumstances surrounding the sudden descent.The pilot-in-command is also under scrutiny after his psychoactive substance screening test on arrival was found to be “not negative”. This came after a meeting between Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala on Tuesday.The Karnataka cabinet was expanded earlier this month with 20 new ministers inducted, taking the ministry to its full sanctioned strength of 34, including chief minister DK Shivakumar.The expansion came two months after Shivakumar took office and also saw the return of former ministers including B Nagendra, Laxman Savadi and Zameer Ahmed Khan.
