Seafarer was airlifted to safety off the Gujarat coast NEW DELHI: A seafarer was airlifted to safety off the Gujarat coast after the Indian Coast Guard carried out a difficult medical evacuation despite rough seas and adverse weather.In a post on X, Indian Coast Guard said that it “successfully executed a MEDEVAC of a 21-year-old seafarer from MT Murlikisan off Porbandar on 26 July 2026. With a swift response from MRCC Mumbai, CGDHQ-1 Porbandar swung into action, providing immediate telemedical assistance while deploying surface and air assets. The patient was airlifted using an ICG Advanced Light Helicopter to Porbandar, medically stabilised by ICG doctors, and shifted to Hospital for further treatment.”The seafarer was reported to be suffering from acute chest pain and a high fever, requiring urgent medical attention.The helicopter successfully winched the patient from the vessel and transported him to the Coast Guard Air Enclave, where an Indian Coast Guard medical officer provided initial stabilisation. Officials said the successful evacuation underscores “ICG’s steadfast dedication to maritime safety and reflects the spirit of Vayam Rakshamah (We Protect).”A few days ago, the Coast Guard evacuated a 29-year-old Indian mariner suffering from a medical emergency aboard the tanker ‘MT Kashimasan’ off the Goa coast, transferring him ashore for urgent treatment.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Unacceptable and must be avoided: MEA NEW DELHI: India summoned the Ukrainian ambassador Monday to condemn attacks on commercial shipping, underscoring the adverse impact of such attacks on the safety of maritime navigation, freedom of navigation and international commerce.However, Ukraine claimed it had warned India about the growing threats to civilian navigation from Russia’s actions in Black Sea, saying the only sustainable way to restore maritime security was to increase international pressure on Russia to end its attacks on civilian shipping. In a statement, the Ukrainian embassy here also sought dialogue between the foreign ministers on the Black Sea security situation.Ukrainian ambassador Oleksandr Polishchuk was summoned by the MEA in connection with the attack on the commercial vessel MV Omorfi that resulted in the death of an Indian national. The ministry said it conveyed its serious concern over the incident and condemned such attacks on commercial shipping in the strongest terms.”The ambassador was requested to convey to the Ukrainian authorities India’s strong concerns over the targeting of commercial vessels and reiterated that such actions, which endanger the lives of innocent civilian seafarers, are unacceptable and must be avoided,” the ministry said.The attacks by both Russian and Ukrainian forces on commercial shipping have caused the deaths of five Indian seafarers. In the latest such attack, a merchant vessel carrying four Indians was struck at Ukraine’s port of Odesa. While two Indian crew members were confirmed safe, information about the other two is awaited.Ukrainian embassy here said in a statement that foreign minister Andrii Sybiha had written to his counterpart S Jaishankar expressing sympathy for the families of Indian seafarers who lost their lives as a result of the deteriorating security situation in the Black Sea.”We hope that, following the relevant proposal made by the minister of foreign affairs of Ukraine, a conversation between the foreign ministers of our two countries will take place in the nearest future to discuss in detail the current security situation in the Black Sea region,” the Ukraine statement said.According to the embassy, Ukraine had consistently warned its international partners, including senior Indian officials, about the growing threats to civilian navigation arising from Russia’s actions in the Black Sea.”Ukraine has also informed its partners about the measures it is taking to prevent the delivery of military cargo and disrupt logistical routes used to sustain Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” it said.The embassy also said that timely and preventive action by competent authorities was vital to protecting seafarers, ensuring the safety of civilian navigation, and strengthening international maritime security in regions where such threats were clearly identified.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Sources said a breakthrough emerged following LS Speaker Om Birla’s outreach to both the government and the opposition to break the impasse NEW DELHI: On a day the opposition’s protest over Delhi Police’s alleged excesses against protesting students washed out proceedings in both Houses of Parliament yet again, signs emerged that normalcy may return from Tuesday, with government’s bill for enhancing punishment in cases of paper leaks likely to be taken up for discussion in the lower House.Sources said a breakthrough emerged following Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s outreach to both government and the opposition for breaking the impasse that has persisted since the monsoon session began on July 20, and that a discussion on the Vande Mataram bill, which makes insulting the national song a penal offence, may begin in Rajya Sabha.What also seems to have nudged the opposition to allow a discussion on Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, which was introduced by Union minister Jitendra Singh amid din, was government’s determination to push through its passage with a voice vote without a debate.It has also brightened the prospect of government revisiting its move to amend the women’s reservation law and increase seats in LS and state assemblies through a constitution amendment bill provided its hectic efforts to reach two-third majority in Parliament succeed.With government determined to secure passage of the public exams bill, Congress and its allies ran the risk of losing a chance to articulate their criticism, while BJP-led NDA would have used the opportunity to back its claim that leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi and other opposition functionaries were running away from a debate.The bill is part of a raft of measures announced by PM Modi to pacify students protesting the NEET-UG paper leak and related issues, and Birla repeatedly emphasised the salience of discussion as the matter was linked to youth and the public exam process. Around 2pm, he told both opposition and government to sort out their differences before the House met again at 5pm.Sources said he met Congress’s K C Venugopal and Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, and also reached out to other opposition members, nudging them to agree to a debate.While six hours have been allotted for discussion, the time may be extended if the House wanted, he said, urging the opposition to choose discussion over the disruption it was causing by demanding a response from home minister Amit Shah over allegations of police excesses.Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju noted that 91 amendment notices to the bill had been moved by opposition MPs and this suggested their willingness to join the discussion.Even as the two sides inched towards a resolution, they continued to trade charges in LS, with opposition insisting that Shah respond to the charge that police used excessive force, including pellet guns in Delhi, and AK-47 in Bihar, against protesting students. Opposition said Shah needed to come out of hiding and face Parliament.Govt, however, matched the aggression and accused Congress of being obstructive for partisan reasons. “The image of Congress has fallen. The apex court called digital arrests the ‘worst kind of crime against senior citizens’ NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Monday said it is against grant of bail to anyone accused of being part of digital arrest scams, except when they point out “extraordinary grounds” which warrant their release from custody.Sending out a message to HCs and trial courts, a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana said, “Digital arrest scams are worst kind of crime against people, especially senior citizens whose life savings and hard-earned money are fraudulently siphoned out when they need it the most.”When an accused pleaded that he had only helped the main accused in opening a bank account and that he has been in custody for more than a year, the bench said this made him an accomplice in the crime.‘Equate digital fraud cases with robbery, dacoity’Rejecting his bail plea, the bench said, “In cases related to digital arrest, we will not grant bail unless extraordinary grounds exist.”On Friday, the bench had said that police and investigating agencies must invoke stringent anti-organised crime law provisions against those found involved in digital arrest or cyber fraud cases. It had also said, “Digital arrest and cyber fraud cases must be equated with robbery and dacoity.”Last year, Supreme Court had taken cognisance of digital arrest cases mostly targeting senior citizens, tasked CBI to probe cases pan-India, and was instrumental in activating an inter-departmental mechanism involving different agencies to devise and implement steps to curb the menace.
