Arunachal's draft electoral roll shrinks by nearly 20% after SIR

NEW DELHI: Arunachal Pradesh’s electorate has shrunk by almost one-fifth in the draft electoral roll published on Tuesday as part of the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise.Only 80.9% electors in the border state submitted their enumeration forms, while the remaining 19.1% were marked as permanently shifted, absent, dead or enrolled at more than one place.The draft roll of the state — which borders China — published on Tuesday has a total 7.18 lakh electors, as against 8.9 lakh electors on June 2, 2026, when SIR Phase 3 was announced. As many as 78,980 electors (8.9%) were marked as permanently shifted, 54,678 (6.2%) as absent or untraceable, 25,573 as dead (2.9%) and 5,281 (0.6%) as others (not willing to be enrolled for some reason of other).As per the Arunachal chief electoral officer (CEO), genuine electors can still be added back to the rolls during the claims and objection period from July 21 to August 20. These claims/objections will be disposed of by Septmber 18 and the final rolls of the state published on September 22.

However, following an observation by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on govt’s linking factor due to change in base year of WPI from 2004-05 to 2011-12 for toll fee revision, road transport ministry, in Sep 2025, had used the linking factor at older rate (2004-5). This resulted in reduction of toll charge, and even the revision in fee in April this year happened at the older rate.But highway operators challenged the ministry’s order in Delhi HC, and the court ruled in their favour. Rahul issued a video message explaining why they staged a protest, demands debate on paper leak in Parliament NEW DELHI: The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi issued statement addressing the students and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Congress party’s protest outside PM residence over the NEET paper leak.He shared a video message on X, saying it was his “direct message to the students of India and the Prime Minister.” He backed the students and demanded a proper discussion in Lok Sabha on Wednesday during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament “This morning I met the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and told him that it was important that we be allowed to debate what happened to the students. The previous day, the Speaker had said he needed to take permission from the government. But it became very clear to us in the hours that followed that the government had no interest in holding a debate,” he said.Continuing his allegations, he added, “So, we took a decision, that we will stage a protest in front of Prime Minister’s house and get the students’ issues to national attention”Further questioning the govt, he added, “Why is the Indian education system collapsing? Why are papers leaking? Why is education so expensive in India? Why do families have to financially ruin themselves to educate their children? These are legitimate questions, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking them.”Rahul also alleged that cases were being filed against students and asserted that the entire Opposition stood with them. Reiterating the demands he said, “The students’ demands are, firstly, the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan and HM Amit Shah. Secondly, action should be taken against those who have beaten and humiliated the students, and all the cases against the students should be withdrawn. Finally, the entire opposition wants that there should be a debate on this tomorrow in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on this issue…”Further addressing PM Modi he said, “The entire Opposition stands with the students. We want reforms in the examination and education systems. We will continue to fight for your voice and your future.”This comes after Rahul along with Priyanka Gandh iwere detained for protesting outside PM residence. They were later released.
