Russia on Tuesday said it is “in touch” with its partners in New Delhi after four Indians were killed on board a merchant vessel off the coast of Ukraine.This comes after Kyiv claimed that Russia hit the Golden Leo—a Guinea-Bissau-flagged ship manned by a crew from India and Syria—with three cruise missiles on Sunday, killing 10 people.Earlier in the day, New Delhi summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires over the incident, news agency PTI reported, citing sources.The Ministry of External Affairs strongly condemned the strike, saying attacks on commercial shipping and civilian crew members were unacceptable.The MEA, in a statement, said, “As per the information available, four Indian nationals have tragically lost their lives, while one is hospitalised in a critical condition. Our mission in Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation and is making every effort to extend all possible assistance to those affected.”The government also reiterated that targeting commercial vessels, endangering civilian seafarers, and disrupting freedom of navigation and international trade were deplorable and should be avoided.One of those killed has been identified as 26-year-old merchant navy officer Akhil Joyan from Vellarikkundu in Kerala’s Kasaragod district. Toll operators said the hike is in the range of 2-5% NEW DELHI: Toll charges on National Highways (NHs) and expressways have marginally increased at several toll plazas across the country, particularly for commercial and heavy vehicles, following a Delhi High Court order restoring the use of a linking factor to convert the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) series for revising user fees.Toll operators said the hike is in the range of 2-5% depending on vehicle category, and in most cases, there is no rise in toll charge for private cars. “This doesn’t impact cars that have FASTag Annual Pass. Even for those which don’t have the pass, there is hardly any increase. Govt has only reinstated the linking factor for toll revision,” said an official.Govt revises the toll charge every April. However, following an observation by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on govt’s linking factor due to change in base year of WPI from 2004-05 to 2011-12 for toll fee revision, road transport ministry, in Sep 2025, had used the linking factor at older rate (2004-5). This resulted in reduction of toll charge, and even the revision in fee in April this year happened at the older rate.But highway operators challenged the ministry’s order in Delhi HC, and the court ruled in their favour. Subsequently, complying with the court order, the ministry on June 29 decided to use the 2011-12 linking factor. “So, the hike of April 2025 has been reinstated, and the rates have also been revised from this April,” said a toll operator.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Rahul issued a video message explaining why they staged a protest, demands debate on paper leak in Parliament NEW DELHI: The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi issued statement addressing the students and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Congress party’s protest outside PM residence over the NEET paper leak.He shared a video message on X, saying it was his “direct message to the students of India and the Prime Minister.” He backed the students and demanded a proper discussion in Lok Sabha on Wednesday during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament “This morning I met the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and told him that it was important that we be allowed to debate what happened to the students. The previous day, the Speaker had said he needed to take permission from the government. But it became very clear to us in the hours that followed that the government had no interest in holding a debate,” he said.Continuing his allegations, he added, “So, we took a decision, that we will stage a protest in front of Prime Minister’s house and get the students’ issues to national attention”Further questioning the govt, he added, “Why is the Indian education system collapsing? Why are papers leaking? Why is education so expensive in India? Why do families have to financially ruin themselves to educate their children? These are legitimate questions, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking them.”Rahul also alleged that cases were being filed against students and asserted that the entire Opposition stood with them. Reiterating the demands he said, “The students’ demands are, firstly, the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan and HM Amit Shah. Secondly, action should be taken against those who have beaten and humiliated the students, and all the cases against the students should be withdrawn. NEW DELHI: Chaos erupted in the heart of New Delhi after several Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi, marched to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg and staged a protest against the alleged brutality committed against students during the Cockroach Janata Party’s march to Parliament.During the protest, Congress leaders tied plastic bands around their hands and raised slogans, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak.However, the protest came as much of a surprise to many Congress leaders as it did to the government.How Congress chalked out the protest planAccording to news agency PTI, the Congress leadership did not tell its leaders about the protest to maintain secrecy, as otherwise the area could have been blockaded.MPs were told that they needed to reach party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence — 10 Rajaji Marg — to wish him on his birthday, PTI reported, citing party sources.Therefore, many MPs were oblivious to what was coming and reached Kharge’s residence. They were then asked to follow Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the top leaders suddenly moved towards the gate of 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, which is about 500 metres from Kharge’s house.Other party leaders also had no clue about the development, and they reached the spot as soon as word spread.Only the top leaders were aware of the move, and they reached Kharge’s residence after both Houses of Parliament were adjourned. Most MPs, however, had no clue about the plan.The surprise sit-in by the Congress top brass in the high-security zone sent the government into a tizzy, prompting it to rush minister of state in the PMO Jitendra Singh, along with Union home secretary Govind Mohan, to persuade the leaders of the opposition to vacate the sensitive site.After meeting Rahul, Jitendra Singh accused him of shifting his demands during the talks.Speaking to news agency ANI, Singh said he and Union home secretary Govind Mohan were deputed by the government to meet senior Congress leaders after they began a sit-in protest at a location that, according to him, was not designated for demonstrations and was causing inconvenience to the public.”It was learned that Congress Party national president Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and others had suddenly started a protest. It was also reported that the place was not very conducive to a sit-in protest. It was causing significant inconvenience to the public,” he said.The minister said the government sent the two officials to persuade the Congress leaders to shift the discussion to Parliament instead of continuing the protest.Later, Rahul , Priyanka , along with Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, were forcibly removed by the police and taken to police stations at Mandir Marg and Chhatrasal Stadium.Get the latest India News and Live updates.
