NEW DELHI: The Centre has announced an all-party meet on July 19 ahead of the commencement of Monsoon Session of the Parliament.According to officials, the government is expected to outline its legislative agenda while the opposition parties will raise they intend to focus during the session.The government has a heavy legislative agenda, and several significant bills are expected to be taken up during the session.Meanwhile the opposition is likely to raise the NEET-UG paper leak case and defence minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks on casualties in Operation Sindoor. The Congress has moved a breach of privilege notice against the Rajnath Singh.”On the recommendation of the Govt of India, Hon’ble President, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji has approved the summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Monsoon Session 2026. The Session will commence on July 20, 2026 and continue till August 13, 2026, for meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of National Importance,” Rijiju said in a post on X.The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the proposed 130th Constitution Amendment Bill is also expected to adopt its report on July 17 before submitting it to Parliament. The Bill has sparked political debate over a provision that mandates the automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Union or State ministers from office if they remain in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days in cases involving serious offences.Ahead of the session, several opposition parties have also faced turmoil. After the defeat in the assembly elections, 20 MPs of Trinamool Congress merged with the National Citizens Party of India. Additionally, three party MPs resigned their Rajya Sabha seats and have joined the BJP.There has been further “split” in Shiv Sena (UBT) with six of the party’s MPs in the Lok Sabha joining Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Palash Sen’s basement studio at Greater Kailash II is an eclectic place. Deep Purple and Tagore are framed on the wall. Eric Clapton, Jane Austen and Wisden jostle in a small bookshelf while a synthesiser masquerades as a piano nearby. In these creative surroundings, the gym equipment looks sheepishly out of tune.The studio is called The Clinic, more a memory than an evidence that Sen, the 60-year-old frontman of rock band Euphoria, was once a practising doctor. There was a time when he treated patients at the clinic originally set up by his father near Shiela cinema in Paharganj. He stopped in 2000, after the music video of ‘Maaeri’ came out. “There would be a crowd outside. It became difficult,” says Sen.Indi-pop was the hot new sound in town then. By the mid-90s, satellite channels such as MTV, Channel V, Music Asia and others had discovered the inadequate reach of western pop. The young and the restless wanted something groovier than the regular film music they were being force-fed. Indi-pop emerged as a hip alternative. Daler Mehndi, Alisha Chinoy, Lucky Ali, Colonial Cousins, Sunita Rao, Shweta Shetty and Baba Sehgal colonised airtime and mindspace. “With Daler, the genre’s popularity went through the roof. He gave all of us hope that we, too, could do it,” recalls the singer-composer.Euphoria rode the wave. Originally devoted to rock and heavy metal covers, their debut album, ‘Dhoom’, pursued a new Indie identity. “We didn’t want to sing someone else’s songs all our lives,” says the self-taught musician. The title track, ‘Dhoom pichak dhoom’, with Shubha Mudgal’s tidal wave take-off, had a strong homespun feel. Ad film director Pradeep Sarkar’s music video, smartly shot in Benaras, created a cool physical aesthetic of the ancient city while retaining its familiar persona of a soul kitchen. “We wanted to do something different,” says Sen, dressed in a black ‘AC/DC Highway to Hell’ T-shirt and knee-length denims.Then ‘Maaeri’, co-written with Jaideep Sahni (‘Chak de! India’), happened. For Euphoria, the chartbuster was a great leap forward. Sen’s high scale rendition of the pining Punjabi folk-flavoured number became theband’s calling card. Many 40-plus Indians would still recall the music video: the girl with toothpaste on her nose and the boy with a coin crushed by a train, a totem of lost love. S en was born in Lucknow to doctor parents: a Bengali cardiologist father and a Dogra gynaecologist mother. Early years were mostly spent with family elders in Jammu and Benaras before his parents moved to Delhi. “I retain a longing for these towns,” he says.In Delhi, his mother worked at the railway hospital. Fellow doctors at the railway colony would drop by for evening tea, often unannounced. Sen vividly and fondly remembers walking to his school, St Columba’s, just 2km from home. “It was a clean and safer city then,” the singer remembers.Euphoria was founded, by his own admission, primarily to impress college girls at Delhi’s University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) in 1988. “I quickly also realised that the girls were impressed when I was on stage, but no longer when I was off it,” he laughs. At UCMS, he wrote and composed his first number, ‘Heaven on the seventh floor,’ a tribute to his hostel room. The band was euphoric when paid a grand Rs 25,000 for a gig at BITS Pilani in 1995. This was also the same time when Sen and company had to make the tough choice of being a serious band or a parttime one. The decision took time. But packed concerts and hit music videos — remember Vidya Balan in ‘Kabhi aana tu meri gali’? — provided the answer.“College students were our main backers. We were the first artists they would ask for. Most people still struggle with English. We sang in Hindi, Punjabi, and a smattering of other languages,” Sen explains their success. A t their peak, Euphoria performed 100 concerts a year. “Even now, we do about 50,” says Sen. Their 3,000 concerts were belted out over every state except Jammu and Kashmir, and in zencountries as wide-ranging as Turkey, Russia and Japan. “We also performed with Pakistani rock band, Junoon, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2001. It was a sort of peace concert, organised by Shashi Tharoor,” Sen remembers.Concerts back home are more localised nowadays. “Twenty years ago, they would ask for rock covers. Now we get requests for songs in Kannada, Telugu, Punjabi, Bangla.” ‘Dhoomsday’, Euphoria’s forthcoming work, collaborates with artists from different languages. The audience has changed in other ways too. “In the past, they would listen to our songs. Now everyone is busy shooting them on mobile,” he says.Euphoria will turn 40 in a couple of years. The band has been a caravan where many have come and left to start new ventures. Apart from Sen, bassist DJ Bhaduri is the only other remaining member from the ‘Dhoom’ days.Sen has simply rolled with the changes. He has done films (Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Filhal’, among others), been a judge on TV shows and directed shorts. “I have done films and shows in Mumbai, but Delhi is my home, a city that makes me happy,” he says. He has one unfulfilled dream: making a feature film.Sometimes, Sen still gets to play doctor. In Kolkata, he once administered CPR to a fan during a concert. On another occasion, he gave a backstage injection to fellow band member Gaurav Mishra, who had an asthma attack. NEW DELHI: Punjab BJP leader Fatehjung Singh Bajwa on Sunday targeted the Congress over reports of infighting in its Punjab unit, claiming the party is “no longer even in the race” for the 2027 assembly elections and would do well to retain its existing seats.”I have been in the Congress. The Congress is a party that faces no threat from external enemies. Its own members tear each other apart. Given the current situation in Punjab, I believe the Congress is no longer even in the race…I feel it would be a significant achievement if they could simply retain the 18 seats they previously held,” Bajwa told ANI.He also referred to allegations made by Congress leaders against the party’s state leadership.”It is not the opposition saying this; it is Congress leaders themselves who claim that Raja Warring has compromised with Bhagwant Mann,” he added.Bajwa’s remarks come amid reports of differences within the Punjab Congress after the party decided to retain Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the state unit chief. Supporters of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi have reportedly been seeking the post for him.Rejecting reports of factionalism, AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel said there was “no resentment” within the party and asserted that Congress leaders were united ahead of the 2027 assembly polls.”In these six days, I held meetings with many committees and held meetings regarding election preparations. I also visited the residences of various senior leaders and met them. The 2027 elections are drawing closer. I have taken all the leaders’ experiences and suggestions regarding its preparation… There is no factionalism. Many confuse mental illnesses and do not understand its magnitude Conversations around mental health have grown louder over the past decade. Understanding and care, however, have struggled to keep pace.For decades, popular culture has turned complex psychiatric conditions into dramatic plot devices. Today, social media and AI-generated content are adding to the noise, making it easier than ever for misinformation to spread alongside genuine medical information.Thus, awareness without accurate understanding can create a different problem in itself. When psychiatric conditions become internet buzzwords or fictional tropes, myths often travel faster than facts.To understand how these misconceptions take shape, three serious but among the most misunderstood mental illnesses have been analysed – schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder (DID) and bipolar disorder. Each is medically distinct, yet all three have many attached stereotypes that continue to influence how society views mental illnesses.According to the WHO, one in every eight people globally lives with a mental disorder. Around 24 million people have schizophrenia, while nearly 40 million live with bipolar disorder.DID is considerably rarer, but its frequent portrayal in books, films and television has made it disproportionately familiar to the public. Watch DID isn’t a movie plot: Understanding a misunderstood disorderDifferent diagnoses, different realitiesOne of the biggest misconceptions surrounding mental illness is the tendency to treat different psychiatric conditions as interchangeable. Terms such as schizophrenia, DID and bipolar disorder are often used loosely.Psychiatrists say that misunderstanding not only creates confusion but can also delay diagnosis, reinforce stereotypes and shape unrealistic expectations about treatment and recovery.Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder that affects how a person perceives reality. It is characterised by symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and disorganised thinking. Many people also experience what clinicians describe as “negative symptoms”, including reduced motivation, diminished emotional expression and difficulty initiating conversations or completing everyday tasks. Together, these symptoms can make studying, working and maintaining relationships challenging.Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) belongs to an entirely different category of psychiatric conditions. Classified as a dissociative disorder, it is characterised by two or more distinct identity states and is usually associated with severe and prolonged trauma, especially in childhood. People may even experience memory gaps and disruptions in their sense of identity.Bipolar disorder, meanwhile, is a mood disorder marked by episodes of depression alternating with periods of mania or hypomania. During manic episodes, a person may experience unusually elevated energy, racing thoughts, impulsive behaviour, increased confidence and a significantly reduced need for sleep.​Three disorders, three different realitiesDespite these differences, public understanding often blurs the boundaries between them.”The most common one I come across, even today, is people assuming schizophrenia means multiple personalities. It doesn’t. These are two separate conditions, and we treat them very differently,” says Dr Divya Nallur, Clinical Director at Amaha, a mental healthcare provider offering psychiatric services.According to her, much of the confusion stems from history as much as medicine. The word “schizophrenia” itself led many people to associate the illness with split personalities, a misunderstanding that popular culture amplified over decades.Dr Asha, psychiatrist at Bengaluru’s SPARSH Hospital, said the same misunderstanding continues to surface in clinical practice. “They are usually confused since popular media inaccurately portrays schizophrenia (Heavily influenced by a combination of genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental factors) as split kind of personalities. In order to improve understanding and reduce stigma surrounding both of the disorders good public education is very much essential,” she said.Additionally, despite being different diagnoses, schizophrenia, DID and bipolar disorder share one common challenge. Many confuse mental illnesses and do not understand its magnitude Conversations around mental health have grown louder over the past decade.
