NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate arrested Harpreet Singh Talwar, a known figure in Delhi‘s party circuit who once held the nightclub franchise of Playboy Club, Wednesday for smuggling drugs in collusion with Pakistanis and Afghan nationals allegedly aligned with ISI.Talwar, who ran the nightclub from Samrat Hotel and was linked, along with others, with the seizure of drugs worth Rs 21,000 crore by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) from Mundra port in 2021, has been accused of deploying narco money in his hospitality business.Talwar was arrested after ED carried out searches on five of his premises in the national capital. He was earlier arrested by the NIA for allegedly being one of the key members of an international drug syndicate, which had origins in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and used his shell entities “in the import of narcotics and further facilitated its transport to Delhi-based Afghan nationals involved in purification and distribution of heroin in many states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, UP, etc”. Talwar was recently released on bail by Gujarat HC.On Aug 13, 2021, DRI had detained two containers at Mundra port and found they had come from Kandahar in Afghanistan via Bandar Abbas port in Iran. “The containers were declared to contain semi-processed talc stones. Examination led to the seizure of 2,988 kg of heroin from the two containers,” a statement said. Follow-up searches led to the recovery of 16 kg of heroin from a godown in Delhi, 10 kg powder suspected to be cocaine and 11 kg of suspected heroin from a house in Noida.Get the latest India news and live updates. Government backs MEA’s ‘Passport never been proof of citizenship’ statement. Credit: ANI The central government on Thursday issued a clarification asserting that an Indian passport has “never been treated as conclusive proof of citizenship”, stressing that the position is neither new nor recently adopted.This comes a day after the ministry of external affairs (MEA), during a media briefing, stated that a passport is primarily a “travel document” and should not be viewed as definitive proof of citizenship. The remarks drew criticism from sections of the Opposition.Defending the position, the government cited Section 20 of the Passports Act, 1967, which empowers the Centre to issue passports or travel documents to non-citizens in certain circumstances.The provision states, “Notwithstanding anything contained in the foregoing provisions relating to issue of a passport or travel document, the Central Government may issue, or cause to be issued, a passport or travel document to a person who is not a citizen of India if that Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest.”According to the government, the legal position has also been upheld by courts, including the Bombay high court, which ruled in 2013 that possession of a passport alone does not establish Indian citizenship, news agency ANI reported.The issue gained political traction after Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal questioned the implications of the MEA’s remarks.In a post on X, Sibal wrote: “MEA June 24, 2026 : “A passport is a travel document, and not a document of citizenship.” Which document then is proof of citizenship? Additionally, the comment started a debate online with questions over citizenship documentation.Responding on X, BJP IT department head Amit Malviya said: “For the “kagaz nahin dikhayenge” brigade outraging over the Ministry of External Affairs’ statement that a passport is not proof of citizenship, here is a reality check. The MEA has not announced a new policy. Supreme Court, Ram Mandir (File photo) NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain an oral request for the urgent listing of a petition seeking a court-monitored investigation into alleged financial irregularities in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya.The court asked the petitioner’s counsel to mention the matter on June 29 for listing.The plea seeks a court-monitored investigation into the alleged financial irregularities in the Trust, including the registration of an FIR and the constitution of a Special Investigation Team under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). It also seeks directions to preserve all physical, digital and financial records, including donation registers, audit reports, CCTV footage and bank records.The development comes days after a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government, submitted its preliminary report on alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple.The SIT handed over its report to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad after completing a week-long inquiry into the handling of temple donations and financial management systems. According to officials, the report recommends administrative reforms, including the appointment of a chief executive officer on the lines of the management model followed at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to improve transparency, accountability and administrative efficiency.The Uttar Pradesh government had constituted the SIT on June 13 after the temple trust itself sought a probe into allegations of theft and misappropriation of devotees’ offerings. The three-member panel is headed by Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and includes Inspector General Kiran S and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan.During the investigation, the SIT examined donation collection and counting procedures, scrutinised financial records and recorded statements of nearly 150 people associated with the temple administration. Officials said the preliminary report contains recommendations aimed at strengthening oversight mechanisms and improving the management of donations. The contents of the report have not been made public.The controversy has also sparked political reactions. Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel accused the BJP and its affiliates of “looting in the name of Ram”, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged attempts to “cover up” the matter. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh also expressed concern over the alleged financial irregularities.The allegations surfaced after claims of missing donation funds and financial mismanagement at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The SIT is also examining allegations related to cash theft, missing ornaments donated by devotees, administrative practices and disputed land transactions. Supreme Court, Ram Mandir (File photo) NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain an oral request for the urgent listing of a petition seeking a court-monitored investigation into alleged financial irregularities in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya.The court asked the petitioner’s counsel to mention the matter on June 29 for listing.The plea seeks a court-monitored investigation into the alleged financial irregularities in the Trust, including the registration of an FIR and the constitution of a Special Investigation Team under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). It also seeks directions to preserve all physical, digital and financial records, including donation registers, audit reports, CCTV footage and bank records.The development comes days after a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government, submitted its preliminary report on alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple.The SIT handed over its report to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad after completing a week-long inquiry into the handling of temple donations and financial management systems. According to officials, the report recommends administrative reforms, including the appointment of a chief executive officer on the lines of the management model followed at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to improve transparency, accountability and administrative efficiency.The Uttar Pradesh government had constituted the SIT on June 13 after the temple trust itself sought a probe into allegations of theft and misappropriation of devotees’ offerings. The three-member panel is headed by Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and includes Inspector General Kiran S and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan.During the investigation, the SIT examined donation collection and counting procedures, scrutinised financial records and recorded statements of nearly 150 people associated with the temple administration. Officials said the preliminary report contains recommendations aimed at strengthening oversight mechanisms and improving the management of donations. The contents of the report have not been made public.The controversy has also sparked political reactions. Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel accused the BJP and its affiliates of “looting in the name of Ram”, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged attempts to “cover up” the matter. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh also expressed concern over the alleged financial irregularities.The allegations surfaced after claims of missing donation funds and financial mismanagement at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The SIT is also examining allegations related to cash theft, missing ornaments donated by devotees, administrative practices and disputed land transactions. 2 held for firing at Guru Randhawa’s gym (ANI) NEW DELHI: Two alleged associates of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang were arrested following a brief exchange of fire with the Delhi Police special cell in west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar, police said on Thursday. The duo is accused of being involved in the June 11 firing outside a gym owned by Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa.In a social media post after the incident, gangster Anil Pandit claimed responsibility for the firing and cited the singer’s association with Salman Khan as the reason for targeting the gym, PTI reported. Pandit is an operative of the Bishnoi gang who is reportedly in the US.The accused, identified as Haqeeqat and Sagar, had been on the run since the shooting. Their arrest brings the total number of people held in the case to four. According to police, the two suspects had arrived in west Delhi on Wednesday night allegedly to execute another crime when special cell teams intercepted them based on specific intelligence inputs. On spotting the police team, the accused allegedly opened fire, triggering a retaliatory response. Both men sustained bullet injuries to their legs during the exchange and were subsequently overpowered. Police said firearms were recovered from their possession. Earlier, two other accused — Arman (19) and Tushar alias Tashu alias Pinku (21), both residents of Haryana’s Sonipat district — were arrested by the crime branch in Bahadurgarh.Get the latest India news and live updates.
