Shinde faction set to induct six rebel MPs from Uddhav camp (Images/Agencies) NEW DELHI: Six rebel Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs will officially join the Eknath Shinde-led camp on Monday afternoon, marking the second major dent to Uddhav Thackeray’s party in four years. Earlier in the day, Shinde-led Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik confirmed the development and the MPs’ merger into the ruling camp.Speaking to reporters, Sarnaik said the MPs would join the Shinde camp at 3 pm, increasing the party’s strength in the Lok Sabha from seven to 13 members.”At 3 pm today, six MPs will officially join Shiv Sena. This will increase the number of our MPs from 7 to 13. This has increased the strength of Shiv Sena,” he said. His remarks came days after six of Shiv Sena (UBT)’s nine Lok Sabha members distanced themselves from the Uddhav Thackeray-led party and informed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla of their decision to form a separate group. The rebel MPs have argued that the party had moved away from its original ideology and expressed concerns over its growing proximity to the Congress. The move has intensified political turmoil within Shiv Sena (UBT), with the party accusing the MPs of betraying the mandate under which they were elected.Meanwhile, rebel MP Sanjay Deshmukh, who represents Yavatmal-Washim, officially joined the Shinde-led faction.A prominent political figure in the Vidarbha region, Deshmukh has played a key role in building the party’s grassroots presence. Before joining Shiv Sena politics, he served two terms as an independent MLA and was Maharashtra’s sports minister between 2002 and 2004.His induction was marked by banners welcoming him to the Shinde faction at several locations across the city.Referring to the ongoing efforts to attract leaders from rival camps, Sarnaik said the party’s ‘Operation Tiger’ was continuing.”Operation Tiger continues all 365 days; the six MPs who follow the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray are joining Shiv Sena at 3 pm today. They have given a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker. We welcome them,” he said.Sarnaik also took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut.”We thank Sanjay Raut because of whom, first, the MLAs joined our party, and now six MPs are joining our party,” he added. How the split unfoldedThe rebellion became public after six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs skipped a parliamentary party meeting convened in Delhi despite a whip being issued by the party. Only Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai and Rajabhau Waze attended the meeting and reaffirmed their support for Uddhav Thackeray. The six MPs subsequently wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking recognition as a separate group. Under the anti-defection law, support from two-thirds of a party’s MPs can protect legislators from disqualification.Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders, including Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut, have strongly criticised the rebel MPs, accusing them of abandoning the party for political gain. The dissidents, however, maintain that their decision is aimed at preserving Balasaheb Thackeray’s ideology and strengthening the Shiv Sena under Eknath Shinde’s leadership.Get the latest India news and live updates. Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde (R) NEW DELHI: Congress on Monday fiercely targeted the BJP over its ally Eknath Shinde-led “Operation Tiger”, aimed at further weakening Uddhav Thackeray’s camp. Referring to the BJP’s “Operation Lotus” and its push for a “Congress-mukt Bharat”, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera slammed the saffron party and questioned the “intention behind this dacoity”.Speaking to reporters after the latest setback to Shiv Sena (UBT), Khera dubbed the exercise “Operation Keechad”.This breakaway from Sena UBT would be second major blow inflicted on Uddhav Thackeray’s party in the last four years by Eknath Shinde, once a loyal Thackeray aide and now chief of the “real” Shiv Sena.He said, “This is Operation Keechad because the Lotus could not flower in these constituencies. Our question is: why is he so hurt that he stopped at 240 seats instead of 400? Why is he now busy stealing MPs from other parties like the TMC and now Shiv Sena? What is the intention? Is the intention to actually change the Constitution? … What is the intention behind this dacoity?”Khera’s scathing remarks came after six of Shiv Sena (UBT)’s nine Lok Sabha members decided to join Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde’s camp and extend support to the ruling NDA.The development also follows another setback for an INDIA bloc party in West Bengal. Trinamool Congress, after suffering a stinging defeat at the hands of the BJP in the state, lost a major number of MPs. Twenty of its Lok Sabha members broke away from Mamata Banerjee’s camp and offered support to the ruling NDA as a separate group, with Kakoli Dastidar as their leader.Get the latest India news and live updates. Aaditya Thackeray accuses rebel MPs of selling loyalty, reputation amid Shiv Sena (UBT) split (Image/PTI) NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday launched a sharp attack on the party’s rebel Lok Sabha members amid the ongoing ‘Operation Tiger’ buzz, accusing them of selling their loyalty and reputation for political gain as the Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit faces a major internal crisis. His remarks came amid a major setback for Shiv Sena (UBT), with six of its nine Lok Sabha members set to join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, deepening the split within the party and dealing another blow to Uddhav Thackeray’s party over the past four years. The rebel MPs have already informed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about their decision to form a separate group and are expected to formally align with the Shinde camp.In a post on X, Aaditya Thackeray said the MPs who switched sides had betrayed the mandate of voters who elected them on the platform of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the INDIA bloc.”To the greedy MPs who have hopped over, you only prove the following, stronger than before: your loyalty, your reputation is for sale, shamelessly. The government is biased and uses public money, politically, as funds,” Aaditya wrote. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said all the MPs now switching sides had contested and won elections with the support of leaders from Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP).”All of the ones that are jumping over now were elected on the platforms of the MVA and the INDIA, against the NDA,” he said.He added that the MPs had sought campaign rallies from leaders across alliance parties during the elections and could not justify their defection through ideological arguments.”The voters voted against the NDA candidates and for INDIA in your constituencies and for all it stands for. Just accept that your greed got you to ditch all of it overnight, shamelessly,” Aaditya wrote. The remarks come as Shiv Sena (UBT) stares at another major split nearly four years after Eknath Shinde’s rebellion divided the party.Six MPs stayed away from a parliamentary party meeting convened by the Uddhav Thackeray camp in Delhi despite a party whip. Only Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai and Rajabhau Waze attended the meeting and publicly reaffirmed their support for Uddhav Thackeray. The rebel MPs reportedly cited concerns over a possible merger of Shiv Sena (UBT) with Congress and alleged deviation from the party’s original ideology as reasons for their decision.Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have indicated disciplinary action against the absent MPs.Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut said action would be initiated as the MPs ignored an official party whip. Lok Sabha member Arvind Sawant said showcause notices would be issued and legal steps would follow if satisfactory responses were not received.Raut also intensified his attack on the dissidents, alleging that the rebel MPs had received financial inducements before being moved to Rajasthan.Meanwhile, Aaditya Thackeray described the developments as a ‘shocking example of dirty politics’ and said Maharashtra would not tolerate such actions.Calling the rebel MPs “shameless, ungrateful and corrupt”, he accused them of betraying party workers and voters who had helped them secure victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.Get the latest India news and live updates.
