Manoj Sinha has terminated a Power Development Department official over alleged involvement in terror-related activities JAMMU: J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has terminated an official with the Power Development Department for his alleged involvement in terror activities.The accused, Mohammad Shafi Malik (51), was the ninth J&K govt employee dismissed from service this year. Five govt staffers were terminated in Jan, and three more were sacked in March. Since 2020, the Union Territory administration has dismissed around 90 govt employees over their alleged links with terrorist outfits.Malik, from Arwani village of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, was posted as a PDD inspector at Hassanpora-Tawella. He was named in three FIRs registered at Bijbehara PS between 2017 and 2018 under various sections of the RPC and Arms Act. NHAI’s home-grown AI-powered tool “Margsarthi” is enabling its more than 1,000 officers to detect discrepancies in contract documents, detailed project reports (DPRs) and minutes of meetings running into hundreds of pages within minutes, helping better decision-making.To add, the “gated garden” tool — which remains in its domain without wandering out in the open internet — is also flagging provisions that could potentially trigger disputes and litigation, and suggest corrective action.The tool, which has gone live, analyses defects, identifies faulty signage, synthesises learnings from previous arbitration and projects delays on the basis of NHAI’s voluminous repository of documents, officials said.NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said, “We felt the need for this when carrying out a workflow study of project directors and regional officers last year we found that they have to be involved in a number of works, which can be easily done using AI tools. With this tool, now officials can check defects of a highway by just uploading a photo. The system will quickly run through hundreds of guidelines, codes, notification, specifications and give the result.”Officials said the tool can also alert officers about issues that need priority attention through personalised WhatsApp messages. Yadav said they are now considering giving access to the AI tool to consultants and contractors after ensuring that there are no loopholes for misuse of the highway authority’s information.Senior NHAI officials admitted that it was a pleasant surprise for them when they found the AI tool flagged how there were certain contradictory decisions or observations in the same projects and also discrepancies with regard to references in the same documents. “This is helping us in a big way and it is likely to reduce the risk of disputes and arbitrations in future projects when we use the tool to access a project report before bidding,” said an official.NHAI is one among the few govt entities that has a maximum number of contracts and disputes of over Rs 1 lakh crore.Get the latest India news and live updates. Ram Temple in Ayodhya NEW DELHI: The Special Investigation Team probing allegations of embezzlement of donation funds at the Ram Temple questioned Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust member Dr Anil Mishra on Thursday, with investigators focusing on the counting of offerings and the appointment of personnel involved in the process, sources said.The three-member SIT arrived at the Ram Temple complex at around 8.30am and continued its inquiry for a fourth straight day.Sources told news agency PTI Mishra was asked about the procedures followed for counting donations and the recruitment of staff tasked with handling the offerings.The questioning comes ahead of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s scheduled visit to the Ram Temple on Friday.As per the minute-to-minute itinerary issued by Ayodhya District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi, temple trust general secretary Champat Rai has been directed to nominate an individual to oversee arrangements for the chief minister’s darshan and pujan.The development follows Rai’s appearance before the SIT on Wednesday as part of the ongoing investigation into the donation controversy.Rai has traditionally accompanied prominent visitors during major visits to the temple but has largely refrained from making public comments since the allegations surfaced.Apart from a statement issued a day after the controversy broke, in which he said internal audits were being conducted and that no evidence supporting the allegations had been found, the trust functionary has maintained silence on the issue.The Uttar Pradesh government constituted the SIT on June 13 after the temple trust sought an investigation into allegations that donation funds had been misappropriated.The panel comprises Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S and Finance Department Special Secretary Neel Ratan.The controversy stems from allegations raised by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on June 7. Referring to media reports claiming that crores of rupees from temple donations were unaccounted for, Yadav urged the courts to take cognisance of the matter.On Thursday, Yadav posted on X that Ayodhya would become a “Kurukshetra” for those allegedly involved in wrongdoing.He also claimed the controversy had adversely affected local businesses and livelihoods dependent on temple tourism, while accusing the BJP government of lacking transparency over the probe.Demanding daily updates on the investigation, Yadav alleged that public confidence in the SIT had weakened because of what he described as “widespread corruption under the BJP government.”The alleged donation fund embezzlement has intensified political confrontation between the ruling BJP and opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh.Get the latest India news and live updates.
