India extends two oldest water tribunals by 1 year

NEW DELHI: India’s two oldest water dispute tribunals — 40-year-old Ravi and Beas, and 22-year-old Krishna water disputes tribunals — have got an extension of one more year till Aug 5, 2027 and July 31, 2027, respectively, as both of them have, so far been unable to resolve the vexed issue despite long years and repeated extensions.A gazette notification for the extension to the Ravi and Beas Tribunal said the Centre considered it necessary to extend till Aug 5 next year. ANI NEW DELHI: Days after directing food businesses to stop using staple pins in food packaging, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered restaurants, food processors and other food establishments to immediately discontinue the use of rusted, corroded, chipped and damaged knives, blades and cutting equipment.The advisory issued on Monday follows reports of rusted and damaged cutting tools being used in food establishments, raising concerns about contamination risks and hygiene standards. FSSAI said some food business operators were using rusted, corroded, chipped, painted or otherwise unsuitable knives and blades during food handling, preparation, processing, cutting, slicing and packaging operations. Such equipment can lead to physical, chemical and microbiological contamination of food, it warned.Food businesses have been directed to use only food-grade, corrosion-resistant cutting equipment, immediately replace damaged tools and implement regular cleaning, sanitisation and sterilisation procedures wherever applicable.The regulator cited provisions under the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, which require food-contact equipment and utensils to be made of food-grade, non-toxic and corrosion-resistant materials and maintained in hygienic condition. Regular cleaning and disinfection are also mandatory under the regulations.Food safety experts said corroded cutting tools can harbour bacteria and may shed metal particles into food during preparation and processing.The advisory comes amid growing regulatory scrutiny of food-contact equipment and hygiene practices in food establishments across the country.The advisory has been circulated to food safety commissioners in all states and union territories and FSSAI’s regional offices for enforcement. Image credit: ANI NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the national celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga from Kolkata’s historic Red Road on June 21, as India prepares for one of the largest global wellness events, the Ministry of Ayush announced on Monday.Unveiling the roadmap for International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026, Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav said this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, reflects the growing global need to ensure longer lives are also healthier, more active and independent.The Minister also announced a major milestone achieved in the run-up to IDY 2026. Referring to the special nationwide live yoga session organised on 14 June, Jadhav stated that more than four lakh participants joined simultaneously, creating a new Guinness World Record.The celebrations will also include yoga programmes at 100 iconic heritage sites across the country, an initiative aimed at linking wellness with India’s cultural legacy. The Ministry of Culture will coordinate these events.Officials said Kolkata will host a series of events leading up to Yoga Day, including “Doud se Dhyan” on June 19 to promote physical fitness and mental well-being, and “Vande Yogam” programmes on June 20showcasing the intersection of yoga, patriotism and cultural heritage.The ministry is also conducting the “Gangotri to Gangasagar: Ganga Tat Yoga Yatra” from June 13 to 20, covering key locations along the Ganga to connect yoga with environmental awareness and community participation.Get the latest India news and live updates. (ANI) NEW DELHI: Palau-flagged vessel MT Settebello at the centre of the India-US standoff had ignored close to 60 verbal warnings before it came under fire from US forces last week, said a US official. The attack left three Indian nationals dead, after which India registered a protest with the USAccording to the official’s remarks, which were reported by AP from Washington, the vessel also did not heed repeated display of force by military aircraft like flares and flyovers meant to warn against violating the American blockade in the Gulf of Oman.External affairs minister S Jaishankar raised the issue with his counterpart Marco Rubio describing as unacceptable use of lethal force against civilian shipping. Rubio told him that the US would not tolerate any attempt to evade the blockade.The latest remarks by a US official sequencing developments that led to the attack seemed aimed at reassuring Indian authorities that US forces had not acted in a reckless manner in launching strikes on Settebello and two other foreign-flagged ships in the past week.However, the US is yet to express any regret for the deaths of Indian mariners.Get the latest India news and live updates.
