Image credit: ANI India announced a $2.5 million contribution to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees on Wednesday while reiterating its long-standing position that a two-state solution is the only way to end the Israel-Palestine conflict.Addressing the UN Security Council, India’s ambassador Harish Parvathaneni said the situation in Gaza remains dire and requires immediate global attention.”We will be handing over in a few days, USD 2.5 million to UNRWA, the first tranche of our annual USD 5 million contribution,” he said.India has steadily increased its support to UNRWA over the years, raising its annual contribution from $1.25 million to $5 million starting in 2018-19. The decision came during a financial crisis that threatened the agency’s ability to deliver services to Palestinian refugees across the region.The enhanced engagement with Palestine follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first-ever visit to Palestine in February 2018, a historic trip that marked a new phase in bilateral ties.Parvathaneni reaffirmed India’s support for “a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine” existing peacefully alongside Israel within secure and recognised borders.He also noted that many of the existing mediation frameworks on Palestine are outdated and no longer relevant. “Today’s Gaza Peace Plan and the Board of Peace framework are very distinct as compared to earlier frameworks,” he said, calling for fresh approaches that reflect current realities.The ambassador emphasised that any peace effort must put human suffering at its centre, particularly the protection of women and children who bear the heaviest toll in conflicts.He also called for a sustained ceasefire in Gaza and full humanitarian access to the region.Get the latest India news and live updates. 'In tune with new realities': India pledges $2.5 million to Palestine

But last night, he called up my son and said that some other advocate, who is much junior to me in the legal profession, will represent him at the hearing on Thursday,” Kalyan Banerjee told reporters.‘He thinks everyone is beneath him’The TMC MP launched a scathing attack on Abhishek Banerjee, accusing him of arrogance and a lack of respect for senior leaders.“He thinks everyone is beneath him, as if everyone is merely an employee from Camac Street. I have been in this profession for 45 years. Who does not know me as a senior advocate? Leave aside this court, even in the Supreme Court people know me. But he has become so arrogant… does not respect anyone. That is why I have stepped aside,” he said.Kalyan Banerjee also alleged that he had spent considerable time preparing the case only to learn later that another lawyer had been engaged.“After that, nobody said anything the entire day. I spent the night preparing the case. Even today, you can see that I am going everywhere, taking risks and doing my work. PTI File Photo After days of uncertainty over the fate of Indian mango exports, Nepal has clarified that no ban has been imposed on shipments from India and that imports are continuing in line with prescribed phytosanitary regulations.This marks a reversal of earlier reports suggesting restrictions on Indian mangoes over pesticide residue and quarantine concerns.The ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare, citing Nepal’s plant quarantine and pesticide management center (National plant protection organization of Nepal), said on Wednesday, “no ban has been imposed on the import of Indian mangoes.””Imports continue to be permitted subject to prescribed phytosanitary requirements. Import permits and release orders are being issued upon compliance with these requirements and submission of valid phytosanitary certificates issued by the Government of India,” the ministry’s statement said.It also described earlier reports of a ban as ‘factually incorrect and misleading’. Exports of Indian mangoes to Nepal have continued without interruption. “Since January 2026, a total of 149 consignments comprising 2005 MT of mangoes have been exported to Nepal. During June 2026 alone, 18 consignments totalling 266 MT have been exported so far,” according to the statement.Additionally, Nepal also explained that the measures were implemented following a Pest Risk Analysis (PRA), conducted in compliance with the plant quarantine and protection act of 2064.”This Centre’s attention has been drawn to news reports circulating in various media and social platforms claiming that a ban has been imposed on the import of Indian mangoes. As the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of Nepal, this Centre regularly conducts Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) in the course of adopting biosecurity measures in accordance with the Plant Quarantine and Protection Act, 2064, and based on this, phytosanitary measures are being adopted to prevent the entry of high-risk pests”, it said, according to an ANI report.The clarification follows an incident in which a large consignment of Indian mangoes was temporarily stopped at the Bhittamod Quarantine Check Post in Nepal’s Madhes Province.However, the shipment was subsequently released after documentation requirements were fulfilled.”The consignment has now been released following the issuance of a plant health certificate from Indian authorities,” Manish Kumar Pal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives of Madhes Province, told PTI.The Nepalese ministry has recently revised certain import conditions, strengthening biosecurity measures to prevent the entry of pest-infected plants. The revised import conditions ensure that consignments are free from specific high-risk pests and mandatory treatment of mangoes in water at 48°C for one hour, a standard international protocol to eliminate larvae and pathogens.”India has conveyed its concerns regarding the introduction of new phytosanitary measures without prior consultation and is pursuing the matter through appropriate bilateral channels in accordance with the WTO SPS Agreement and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) framework,” agriculture ministry said.While locally grown Nepali mangoes are highly regarded for their quality, their production is limited to a short harvest window of around two months, making steady imports from India crucial to meeting consumer demand.Get the latest India news and live updates. PTI File Photo After days of uncertainty over the fate of Indian mango exports, Nepal has clarified that no ban has been imposed on shipments from India and that imports are continuing in line with prescribed phytosanitary regulations.This marks a reversal of earlier reports suggesting restrictions on Indian mangoes over pesticide residue and quarantine concerns.The ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare, citing Nepal’s plant quarantine and pesticide management center (National plant protection organization of Nepal), said on Wednesday, “no ban has been imposed on the import of Indian mangoes.””Imports continue to be permitted subject to prescribed phytosanitary requirements. Import permits and release orders are being issued upon compliance with these requirements and submission of valid phytosanitary certificates issued by the Government of India,” the ministry’s statement said.It also described earlier reports of a ban as ‘factually incorrect and misleading’. Exports of Indian mangoes to Nepal have continued without interruption. “Since January 2026, a total of 149 consignments comprising 2005 MT of mangoes have been exported to Nepal. During June 2026 alone, 18 consignments totalling 266 MT have been exported so far,” according to the statement.Additionally, Nepal also explained that the measures were implemented following a Pest Risk Analysis (PRA), conducted in compliance with the plant quarantine and protection act of 2064.”This Centre’s attention has been drawn to news reports circulating in various media and social platforms claiming that a ban has been imposed on the import of Indian mangoes. As the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of Nepal, this Centre regularly conducts Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) in the course of adopting biosecurity measures in accordance with the Plant Quarantine and Protection Act, 2064, and based on this, phytosanitary measures are being adopted to prevent the entry of high-risk pests”, it said, according to an ANI report.The clarification follows an incident in which a large consignment of Indian mangoes was temporarily stopped at the Bhittamod Quarantine Check Post in Nepal’s Madhes Province.However, the shipment was subsequently released after documentation requirements were fulfilled.”The consignment has now been released following the issuance of a plant health certificate from Indian authorities,” Manish Kumar Pal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives of Madhes Province, told PTI.The Nepalese ministry has recently revised certain import conditions, strengthening biosecurity measures to prevent the entry of pest-infected plants. The revised import conditions ensure that consignments are free from specific high-risk pests and mandatory treatment of mangoes in water at 48°C for one hour, a standard international protocol to eliminate larvae and pathogens.”India has conveyed its concerns regarding the introduction of new phytosanitary measures without prior consultation and is pursuing the matter through appropriate bilateral channels in accordance with the WTO SPS Agreement and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) framework,” agriculture ministry said.While locally grown Nepali mangoes are highly regarded for their quality, their production is limited to a short harvest window of around two months, making steady imports from India crucial to meeting consumer demand.Get the latest India news and live updates. Image credit: PTI NEW DELHI: The Calcutta high court on Thursday granted interim protection from coercive action to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in connection with a case involving the alleged forgery of signatures of newly elected TMC MLAs after the recent assembly elections.While granting interim relief, the court directed Banerjee to appear before the investigating agency at 6 pm on Thursday for questioning in the matter. However, the protection order ensures that no coercive action can be taken against him for the time being.The high court also observed that Banerjee cannot be compelled to produce the allegedly forged document. It said the investigating agency must obtain the document through the legal process of search and seizure rather than requiring him to submit it.What is the case about?After the TMC’s defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections, two factions emerged within the party, one backing Abhishek Banerjee, and another led by rebel MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha.Abhishek Banerjee wrote to the Assembly Speaker recommending senior leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition. A resolution purportedly signed by about 70 TMC MLAs was submitted to the Assembly Secretariat.On May 27, the two rebel MLAs told the Speaker that there was no meeting or resolution on May 6. They said they were only asked to sign a book on May 19, not any resolution. They also pointed out that at least 14 signatures were written in block letters rather than real cursive handwriting.The Assembly Secretariat filed an FIR. The case was later transferred to the CID. The CID has questioned at least 13 TMC MLAs, and at least three lawmakers have said the signatures linked to them are not real.Banerjee was summoned three times, on June 1, June 8 and June 9, but did not appear. His legal team said he was sick and in Delhi.On June 9, CID searched the TMC office located on the same premises as Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence.
