NEW DELHI: Sanjay Vatsayan has been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Western Naval Command, headquartered in Mumbai.Vice Admiral Vatsayan is currently serving as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff and is set to take charge of one of the Indian Navy’s most strategically important commands, responsible for safeguarding India’s western maritime front and key sea lanes in the Arabian Sea.A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Pune, he has served in a wide range of operational, command and staff appointments during a naval career spanning more than three decades.

Extensive operational experience

Vice Admiral Vatsayan has served onboard several frontline warships, including as part of the commissioning crew of INS Mysore and INS Nishank.He also commanded multiple naval platforms, including missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, missile corvette INS Kuthar and guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri, where he served as the commissioning commanding officer.In February 2020, he took over as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet and led several operational deployments and exercises during a period of heightened maritime activity following the Galwan crisis, as per the Navy release.

Key staff and strategic roles

Vice Admiral Vatsayan has also held several important policy and planning assignments at Naval Headquarters, including Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning) and Principal Director Naval Plans.On promotion to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans). He later held positions as Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy and Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command.Before assuming charge as Vice Chief of Naval Staff in August 2025, he served at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff in senior operational and policy roles, where he was involved in coordination of operations, force development and policies promoting indigenisation in the armed forces, according to the Navy release.For his distinguished service, he was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021.
