. NEW DELHI: Road deaths due to negligence — rash, careless, or irresponsible driving — claimed 495 lives daily in 2024, as per the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). It said that nearly 1.81 lakh lives were lost in such accidents, an increase of nearly 4.4% over the previous year.The number of fatalities in 2024 is also higher than the figure the road transport ministry had shared with Parliament, which was 1.77 lakh. The ministry is yet to publish its report on Road Accidents in India. NCRB will also separately publish a detailed report of the accidental deaths in 2024.As per NCRB (under home ministry), Uttar Pradesh reported maximum road deaths in 2024 due to negligence (25,158), followed by Tamil Nadu (18,676), Karnataka (16,232), Madhya Pradesh (15,440) and Maharashtra (15,249). All these states reported more road fatalities compared with 2023, indicating that Indian roads have become more unsafe.NCRB report also shows that the number of people killed in hit-and-run cases increased from 55,334 in 2023 to 56,974 in 2024, with UP topping the list with 19,641 such fatalities, followed by MP (10,130) and Bihar (4,949). Among million-plus cities, Delhi reported a maximum of 949 hit-and-run deaths, followed by Bengaluru (773) and Jaipur (744).India tops the list among nations in road deaths with a share of more than 12% of the all such fatalities across the globe. Mehbooba Mufti SRINAGAR: PDP has dismissed allegations by rival National Conference that all its three MLAs voted for BJP in the polls for four Rajya Sabha seats in Kashmir in Oct last year.The current war of words between NC and the PDP stems from an RTI reply, which says the Mehbooba Mufti-led party didn’t appoint a polling agent during the RS polls in which NC won three seats and BJP the fourth despite lacking the numbers.Records indicate at least four MLAs cross-voted in favour of BJP candidate Sat Sharma, who polled 32 votes against the party’s strength of 28 in the polling held on Oct 24, 2025. Despite backing from 59 members, NC couldn’t win the fourth seat.PDP has three MLAs in Kashmir.For the past one week, NC has been asking PDP MLAs to swear by the Quran they had not voted for the BJP. “We appointed our agent. But the PDP didn’t appoint any agent. Now the only way is that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti should swear by the Holy Quran and we will end the issue,” NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said.PDP MLA Waheed Parra said NC’s outcry over the Rajya Sabha vote is misplaced. “It serves as a diversion from substantive concerns, notably erasure of Urdu from official records,” the MLA said.PDP spokesperson Mohit Bhan said his party didn’t even field a candidate in RS polls. “Agents are appointed by candidates, not parties. Mehbooba Mufti SRINAGAR: PDP has dismissed allegations by rival National Conference that all its three MLAs voted for BJP in the polls for four Rajya Sabha seats in Kashmir in Oct last year.The current war of words between NC and the PDP stems from an RTI reply, which says the Mehbooba Mufti-led party didn’t appoint a polling agent during the RS polls in which NC won three seats and BJP the fourth despite lacking the numbers.Records indicate at least four MLAs cross-voted in favour of BJP candidate Sat Sharma, who polled 32 votes against the party’s strength of 28 in the polling held on Oct 24, 2025. Despite backing from 59 members, NC couldn’t win the fourth seat.PDP has three MLAs in Kashmir.For the past one week, NC has been asking PDP MLAs to swear by the Quran they had not voted for the BJP. “We appointed our agent. But the PDP didn’t appoint any agent. Now the only way is that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti should swear by the Holy Quran and we will end the issue,” NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said.PDP MLA Waheed Parra said NC’s outcry over the Rajya Sabha vote is misplaced. “It serves as a diversion from substantive concerns, notably erasure of Urdu from official records,” the MLA said.PDP spokesperson Mohit Bhan said his party didn’t even field a candidate in RS polls. “Agents are appointed by candidates, not parties. Source: MoEFCC NEW DELHI: India, host of the upcoming first International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) summit on June 1-2, on Wednesday exhorted all big cat range countries that are not yet part of the Alliance to join it. So far, 25 of the total 95 range countries have joined this treaty-based global entity as members and other five as observers.“Together, we can build a strong, inclusive, and action-oriented platform to secure the future of these magnificent species,” said Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav while urging remaining range countries to join the Alliance, an inter-governmental organisation, headquartered in Delhi.He also launched the website and logo of the first IBCA Summit which will adopt the first-ever global declaration on Big Cat conservation (Delhi Declaration), establishing a unified framework to strengthen international cooperation and reinforce the Alliance’s role as a leading global platform for conservation efforts.Calling it “strategically significant” Summit, Yadav said it would strengthen international partnerships, promote south–south cooperation, and inspire collective action across big cat range countries. “It will also help align conservation efforts with global biodiversity and climate goals,” said the minister on the occasion.The Alliance, India’s brainchild, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event commemorating 50 years of Project Tiger in India on April 9, 2023, with the aim of conserving the seven big cats – Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar and Puma – in coordination with other countries. Except for Jaguar and Puma, India is home to five big cats.The Alliance’s primary objective is to facilitate collaboration and synergy among stakeholders, consolidating successful conservation practices and expertise to achieve the conservation of big cats at a global level.Besides India, the countries which have already formally joined it as members include Russia, Cambodia, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Armenia, Ethiopia, Mongolia and Rwanda among others.The upcoming Summit, guided by the theme ‘Save Big Cats, Save Humanity, Save Ecosystem’, would bring together over 400 conservationists, policymakers, scientists, multilateral agencies, financial institutions, corporate leaders and community representatives from across the globe.About the AuthorVishwa MohanVishwa Mohan is Senior Editor at The Times of India.
