Engineer Rashid NEW DELHI: The Delhi HC Tuesday permitted Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid, jailed in a terror funding case, to meet his ailing father at AIIMS Delhi from 8am to 8pm daily till May 10. Justices Prathiba M Singh and Madhu Jain clarified that after the meeting in AIIMS, he would return to jail and added that the other conditions, including the presence of at least two cops in plain clothes with Rashid, remain unchanged. The court specified that police officials would stand outside his father’s ward. NEW DELHI: The Delhi HC Tuesday permitted Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid, jailed in a terror funding case, to meet his ailing father at AIIMS Delhi from 8am to 8pm daily till May 10. Justices Prathiba M Singh and Madhu Jain clarified that after the meeting in AIIMS, he would return to jail and added that the other conditions, including the presence of at least two cops in plain clothes with Rashid, remain unchanged. NEW DELHI: Big political personalities were humbled in the latest round of assembly elections, with voters across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala delivering a “vote for change” that swept aside as many as 50 ministers – including two sitting chief ministers – alongside several high-profile challengers in other states and a Union Territory.In West Bengal, the setback was the most pronounced. A total of 22 ministers from the TMC govt lost their seats, among them CM Mamata Banerjee, who suffered her second consecutive assembly defeat. Banerjee lost in Bhabanipur to Suvendu Adhikari, the same rival who had defeated her in Nandigram in 2021 in a closely fought contest.The rout extended deep into the cabinet. Thirteen cabinet ministers – including Banerjee – were defeated, along with five ministers of state with independent charge. Prominent names who failed to retain their seats included Swapan Debnath, Pradip Kumar Mazumdar, Bratya Basu, and Aroop Biswas.Tamil Nadu witnessed a similarly dramatic churn. CM M K Stalin lost the Kolathur seat, which he had held since 2011, to TVK’s V S Babu. The electoral setback extended to 14 other ministers in his cabinet, including finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan and education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.In Kerala, CM Pinarayi Vijayan retained his Dharmadam seat, but 13 of his ministers were defeated, including health minister Veena George and education and labour minister V Sivankutty.Among other prominent losers was Gaurav Gogoi, deputy leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, who was defeated in the Jorhat assembly segment by BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami with a margin of 23,182 votes. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has appealed to courts to consider granting bail to accused in case of delay in trial, irrespective of gravity of offence, as the right of speedy trial is a fundamental right, reports Amit Anand Choudhary. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi granted bail to a murder accused on that ground, noting he had been in jail for four years and not a single witness had been examined during the trial. “We are mindful of the fact that the petitioner is charged with the offence of murder, but time and again, we have said howsoever serious the crime may be, if the right of speedy trial is infringed, then the court must consider the plea for bail appropriately. Here is a case wherein past almost four years, the petitioner is in jail, but not a single witness has been examined,” the bench said. “We order that the petitioner be released on bail forthwith, if not required in any other case, subject to terms and conditions that the trial court may deem fit to impose,” it said. PM Modi NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi strongly condemned the drone attacks on Fujairah in the UAE, which resulted in injuries to three Indian nationals, saying targeting civilians and infrastructure is unacceptable. Like in his past condemnation of attacks on the UAE and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Modi didn’t name Iran, but said India stood in firm solidarity with the UAE and reiterated support for the peaceful resolution of all issues through dialogue and diplomacy. On X, Modi also said ensuring safe and unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is vital for enduring regional peace, stability and global energy security. Modi will visit the UAE, a key strategic partner in the Gulf, on his way to Europe this month for a quick layover during which he will meet President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Both external affairs minister S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval have visited the UAE since the US-Iran ceasefire was announced.In a separate statement, the ministry of external affairs called the attacks on Fujairah unacceptable and sought immediate cessation of hostilities and the targeting of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians. “India continues to stand for dialogue and diplomacy to deal with the situation, so that peace and stability may be restored across West Asia. We also call for free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz in keeping with international law,” it said, adding India stood ready to support all efforts for a peaceful resolution of issues. The UAE foreign ministry described the attacks, which originated allegedly in Iran, as a serious escalation and said they posed a direct threat to the country’s security.
