70% of electricity consumed during April-June quarter came from thermal energy

NEW DELHI: Even as the share of renewable energy (RE) in the power mix has steadily increased, thermal power continues to remain the mainstay, with 70% of the electricity consumed in the country during the April-June quarter coming from coal-based plants.During the non-solar peak-demand hours, the share of coal-based generation reached a maximum of 75%, minister of state for power Shripad Yesso Naik informed Rajya Sabha.The share of renewable energy has increased significantly over the last few years, with solar, wind, nuclear and hydro together accounting for over 54% of India’s total installed capacity of 548.8 gigawatts. Wind and solar energy set a record earlier this month, generating more than 100 GW together. While the high penetration of variable RE is a reason to rejoice, it is coal-based thermal power that carries the bulk of the load when solar energy is not available and wind intensity drops.With 230.8 GW of installed capacity, the maximum generation achieved from coal- and lignite-based thermal power plants was about 188.8 GW in the first quarter of FY27. While 9.5 GW of thermal capacity was added in 2025-26, the minister informed that 2.3 GW had been commissioned during the current fiscal.The minister also said that, as on July 12, 42.8 million tonne of coal stock was available at thermal power plants, sufficient for 14 days at an 85% plant load factor. He added that sufficient coal was being received by thermal power plants to meet the daily requirement and that a joint committee of the ministries of power, railways and coal was monitoring supplies on a daily basis.Responding to a separate question, the minister informed Parliament that 11 pumped storage projects with an aggregate installed capacity of 15.8 GW were under construction, while another six, with an aggregate installed capacity of 8.2 GW, had received concurrence from the Central Electricity Authority.

They were then asked to follow Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the top leaders suddenly moved towards the gate of 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, which is about 500 metres from Kharge’s house.Other party leaders also had no clue about the development, and they reached the spot as soon as word spread.Only the top leaders were aware of the move, and they reached Kharge’s residence after both Houses of Parliament were adjourned. Most MPs, however, had no clue about the plan.The surprise sit-in by the Congress top brass in the high-security zone sent the government into a tizzy, prompting it to rush minister of state in the PMO Jitendra Singh, along with Union home secretary Govind Mohan, to persuade the leaders of the opposition to vacate the sensitive site.After meeting Rahul, Jitendra Singh accused him of shifting his demands during the talks.Speaking to news agency ANI, Singh said he and Union home secretary Govind Mohan were deputed by the government to meet senior Congress leaders after they began a sit-in protest at a location that, according to him, was not designated for demonstrations and was causing inconvenience to the public.”It was learned that Congress Party national president Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and others had suddenly started a protest. It was also reported that the place was not very conducive to a sit-in protest. It was causing significant inconvenience to the public,” he said.The minister said the government sent the two officials to persuade the Congress leaders to shift the discussion to Parliament instead of continuing the protest.Later, Rahul , Priyanka , along with Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, were forcibly removed by the police and taken to police stations at Mandir Marg and Chhatrasal Stadium.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Parliament session will be washed out: Jairam Ramesh demands Amit Shah’s statement on police brutality against student protestors NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday warned that the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament could be a “washout” if the government continued to refuse discussions on the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and the police action against youth protesters who attempted to march to Parliament a day earlier.Congress MP Jairam Ramesh’s remarks came after Delhi Police detained opposition leaders who joined a surprise protest led by the Congress outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.He added that Union home minister Amit Shah, under whose ministry the Delhi Police functions, must make a statement on the police action against protesters.””Our demand has been, and will continue to be, that the home minister makes a statement and that there is a detailed discussion regarding the education system, the examination system, and the atrocities committed against students by the Delhi Police yesterday. Furthermore, we demand the resignation of the education minister (Dharmendra Pradhan)… However, I do not see that happening. If the government maintains this mindset, then the Parliament session will definitely be washed out,” the Rajya Sabha MP told ANI.Ramesh further stated that the united stand by opposition parties reflected growing concern over the handling of the examination controversy and the alleged police excesses against students.”Opposition unity and solidarity were displayed in a very powerful and impactful manner,” he added.Earlier, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Congress leaders were detained by Delhi Police during a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence at Lok Kalyan Marg.The Congress had marched from Rajaji Marg, demanding accountability over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, action over the alleged police crackdown on student protesters, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Tamil Nadu CM Vijay; DMK supremo MK Stalin NEW DELHI: DMK supremo MK Stalin on Tuesday hit out at Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay over the arrest of a party MLA, warning that the people would teach the ruling TVK a “befitting lesson” if it tried to “cover up its misrule” through arrests.”If this government thinks it can cover up its misrule with arrests, the people themselves will teach a fitting lesson to such arrogance,” Stalin, Vijay’s predecessor as chief minister, said in an X post.He referred to an editorial in an English daily that criticised the TVK-led Tamil Nadu government for initiating criminal proceedings over political criticism.Stalin’s remarks came amid an escalating confrontation between the ruling TVK and the principal opposition DMK. Tamil Nadu CM Vijay; DMK supremo MK Stalin NEW DELHI: DMK supremo MK Stalin on Tuesday hit out at Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay over the arrest of a party MLA, warning that the people would teach the ruling TVK a “befitting lesson” if it tried to “cover up its misrule” through arrests.”If this government thinks it can cover up its misrule with arrests, the people themselves will teach a fitting lesson to such arrogance,” Stalin, Vijay’s predecessor as chief minister, said in an X post.He referred to an editorial in an English daily that criticised the TVK-led Tamil Nadu government for initiating criminal proceedings over political criticism.Stalin’s remarks came amid an escalating confrontation between the ruling TVK and the principal opposition DMK. On Monday, DMK MLA GV Markandeyan was arrested over his purported “we will crush your bones” remark allegedly directed at chief minister Vijay.After several hours of questioning, Markandeyan was produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody.Stalin condemned the police action, describing it as an attempt to criminalise “political criticism”, and warned of consequences.TVK, launched by Vijay in February 2024, emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections in April and later formed the government with the support of the Congress, VCK, IUML, and the Left parties.Vijay, an actor-turned-politician, succeeded Stalin as chief minister after the DMK government was voted out following a single term in office.(With PTI inputs)Get the latest India News and Live updates.
