The move may directly affect close to 15,000 farmers and put nearly Rs 150 crore worth of produce at stake. The ban covers paddy sowing, nursery preparation and transplantation, DM Nitin Singh Bhadauria said, adding restrictions are likely to be extended across Terai region, including parts of Nainital and Haridwar, and “no relaxation would be granted this year”. In 2024, a similar ban was briefly imposed but later relaxed after talks with farmers. No other district in the state currently has an identical, explicit ban on summer paddy, while states like Haryana enforce a statutory ban on early paddy sowing under a subsoil water law, whereas Punjab follows calendar-based restrictions. “This decision has been taken after consultations with agricultural scientists and farmer groups. Our priority is long-term water security, and we urge farmers to cooperate,” the DM said. As per estimates, summer paddy is usually cultivated on around 22,000 hectares of land in the district. With most farmers operating on small holdings of one to two hectares, the restriction is likely to directly hit household incomes. The ban has been justified by officials and experts. Over the past decade, groundwater levels in the district have reportedly fallen by nearly 70 feet. Blocks such as Jaspur and Kashipur have already been classified as “critical”. Speaking at Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary, he said no country can develop without self-confidence and told the largely young audience that it is their responsibility to end the “slave mindset” that afflicted a generation of Indians due to the education policy of Thomas Macaulay. His laudatory words for Gen Z, which has ruled global headlines for a while largely due to a string of anti-govt protests it has spearheaded in different countries, including in neighbouring Bangladesh, have come against the backdrop of a few opposition leaders referring to their agitations outside and seeking to coopt them in their agitation against the PM Modi govt. The Rahul Gandhi-led Congress campaign against alleged “vote chori” reached out to the young generation in its bid to “save” democracy. PM Modi said that India’s youth with its innovative ideas, energy and purpose is at the forefront of nation-building. Ruing the “slavery mindset”, he said imported products were seen as a “guarantee” of quality, while Indian goods and traditions were looked at with an inferiority complex, urging the young generation to follow Vivekananda who was open to best practices from abroad but took on the misconception spread about India’s heritage. Turning to the rich legacy of Indian storytelling, including epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, he suggested that the new crop of entrepreneurs in the gaming sector can develop mythological stories into games and take them global. “Our Hanuman ji can dominate gaming in the world,” he said, adding that it will export Indian culture in a modern way. He contrasted the opening of a string of sectors ranging from space to nuclear power and defence and easing of regulations and taxes ushered by his govt with the UPA era, which, he said, was accused of policy paralysis and its inability to implement things on ground. So many rules and restrictions existed at the time that youth had few choices, and even applying for a job or a loan from banks demanded a web of compliances, he added. He said, “As a CM and now as PM, I have put a lot of trust in the young generation, your capability and talent.” Sectors restricted to the govt have been opened to private players, PM Modi added. He praised their presentation on different themes and said, “It shows the mood of Gen Z in India. NEW DELHI: Domestic thermal power plants currently have enough coal stocks to generate electricity for about 21 days, the ministry of coal said on Monday, adding that India recorded its highest-ever coal production of nearly 1,048 million tonnes (MT) in the 2024–25 financial year.In a statement, the ministry said that as of Dec 31, total coal stocks at domestic coal-based thermal power plants were estimated at nearly 50.3 MT, over 17% higher than the nearly 43 MT of stocks available on the last day of 2024. India’s thermal power plants had faced severe coal shortage in 2021–22, when fuel stocks at several stations fell to an average of nearly four days. The normative stock ideally required to comfortably operate power plants at an 85% load factor is estimated at 20–23 days.There are about 188 thermal power plants in the country, with an installed capacity of nearly 220 gigawatts.The ministry said thermal power plant stocks crossed the 50 MT-mark on Nov 22, around 80 days earlier than in the previous financial year, when this level was reached on Feb 9. Coal production in the 2024–25 fiscal year was nearly 5% higher than the 998 MT recorded in the previous financial year. The calendar year 2025 saw total coal production of about 1,043 MT.“Abundant and uninterrupted supply of coal to the power sector has led to a reduction in imported coal blending by 54.2% over the last year. Coal imported for blending up to Dec 25 stood at just 5.5 MT, compared with 12 MT in the previous calendar year,” it said.With increased domestic coal production, coal imports during the first nine months of 2024–25 fell by 7.9% to 243.6 MT, compared with 264.6 MT in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
