INDORE: In Bhagirathpura, mornings no longer begin with the clang of utensils and the rush to fill water pots. In the country’s cleanest city, people now pause before drinking water. The densely populated neighbourhood in Indore district, home largely to daily-wage workers and small shop employees, is still coming to terms with the deaths caused by contaminated drinking water.Parvati Suryavanshi, 62, frail and recovering from severe diarrhoea, waits for a tanker outside her house. Just inside her door, a blue plastic drum stands filled with tanker water, its lid tightly shut. “We will boil this and drink. We no longer use tap water,” she says. The fear runs across Bhagirathpura. Almost every household has members suffering from fever, vomiting and dehydration. Buckets and steel containers line kitchens, all filled with tanker water that is boiled multiple times before consumption. Many families have stopped drinking Narmada supply water entirely.”There is not a single house where someone hasn’t fallen sick,” says Kamla Kumari, waiting for her husband to bring medicines for her ailing mother-in-law. “We complained repeatedly. We cannot afford RO systems or bottled water; we are dependent on tankers.”For many, the health crisis is also a financial one. Pushpa Morya, whose 77-year-old husband’s condition deteriorated rapidly, shifts him between three hospitals. “We have spent nearly Rs 15,000 on treatment, and Rs 2,000 just on diapers,” said Morya. “As his health worsened, we kept changing hospitals. Along with the illness, now our savings are being completely exhausted.”Residents lament the lack of timely warning. Families initially rushed to nearby clinics, unsure of the cause, only realising the pattern when it was too late. “If only someone had told us earlier that the water was unsafe,” says a young resident. “The water kept coming, and people kept getting sick from it.”In a city that is celebrated nationally for its cleanliness rankings, the irony is bitter for locals.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos”No Control Over Minority Violence In Bangladesh…”: Former Indian Envoy Slams Yunus Govt“Infamous For His Tour With Anti-National Propaganda”: BJP Rips Rahul Gandhi Over Vietnam VisitInqilab Moncho To March Nationwide Seeking Justice For Sharif Osman Hadi14 Naxals Neutralized In Sukma And Bijapur As Security Forces Launch Anti-Maoist OperationHimachal College Horror: Student Dies After Alleging Sexual Harassment, RaggingIndia Reveals First Vande Bharat Sleeper Offering Faster Overnight Travel On Kolkata-Guwahati LineHindu Businessman Khokon Das, Hacked And Set Ablaze By Mob in Bangladesh, Dies 3 Days After Attack‘Slavery Destroys Heritage’: PM Modi’s Big Message After Unveiling Sacred Buddha Piprahwa RelicsBCCI Asks KKR To Release Bangladesh Player From IPL After Outrage Over Attacks On Hindu MinoritiesGovt Sends Notice To Elon Musk’s X On Grok AI Chatbot Misuse, IT Ministry Seeks Action Report123PhotostoriesHow to make protein-rich Rajma and Soya Kebab for snackingTop 9 cabbage dishes from around the world5 health facts about the world’s number one longevity food5 most photographed natural monuments in the world to explore in 20265 best Indian forests to see wild Asian elephants in JanuaryKrystle D’Souza’s roles that defined her TV career: ‘Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai’ to ‘Belan Wali Bahu’:TV celebrities’ cutest baby name choices: From Bharti Singh-Harsh Limbachiyaa’s Gola to Nakuul Mehta-Jankee Parekh’s Sufi and Rumi8 short and engaging books you can read in a single day8 traditional and comforting Maharashtrian rice dishes that are worth a tryTravel trend 2026: 5 destinations in Asia perfect for slow travel and ‘quietcations’123Hot PicksOperation SindoorVande Bharat Sleeper TrainJanuary Bank holidayGold rate todayIncome Tax RefundBahrain Golden Visa 2025Bank Holidays DecemberTop TrendingSan Francisco 49ersBrittany MahomesNoah Lyles and Junelle Bromfield Net WorthWayne Gretzky Daughter Net WorthSidney Crosby LifestyleLeBron James vs Stephen Curry Net WorthTom BradyLeBron James WifeCam ThomasCharlie Kirk

INDORE: Political tension flared in Bhagirathpura area on Saturday as BJP and Congress workers engaged in a fierce confrontation, trading slogans over deaths of 10 people due to contaminated water, reports Sagar Choukse. The confrontation occurred when a Congress fact-finding panel visited the affected locality, prompting police intervention and multiple detentions. Indore officials confirmed another death due to diarrhoea, raising toll to five. When the Congress fact-finding committee arrived to meet affected families, they were met by a large group of BJP workers who staged a counter-protest, shouting “Outsiders go back”. In response, Congress supporters chanted ‘Ghanta Party Murdabad’ (referencing a recent statement by a state minister). The situation escalated as some protesters waved black flags, while others reportedly threw black bangles at the opposing faction. A slipper was also hurled at Congress politician and former state minister Sajjan Singh Verma. As the standoff threatened to turn violent, ACP Amit Singh and other senior police officers intervened. Congress politicians, including Verma, party MLA (Tarana) Mahesh Parmar, party MLA (Sardarpur) Pratap Grewal, state women’s Congress president Reena Bourasi, and city Congress president Chintu Choukse, were forcibly put in police vehicles and removed from the site.”Around 40-50 Congress workers were arrested for disturbing the peace,” additional DCP Rajesh Dandotiya said, adding that the crowd was dispersed. Later, the politicians were released from central jail on filling bonds. Verma launched a scathing attack on the state govt, describing the incident as “murder of democracy” and adding that “police are acting as shields for BJP workers while we are stopped from meeting grieving families”.Meanwhile, chief medical and health officer Dr Madhav Hasani reported that as of Saturday 356 patients were hospitalised, of which 209 had been discharged. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday called out the BJP-led Delhi government for insulting dalits by choosing to install portraits of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malaviya in the Delhi assembly on the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, instead of honouring the pioneering social reformer herself, AAP said in a press release. AAP Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj and Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar emphasised that the government not only failed to acknowledge a dalit icon who laid the foundation of women’s education in India, but also went a step further by initiating a privilege breach case against MLAs who raised the demand, calling it a clear reflection of the BJP’s anti-dalit mindset.During a press conference, AAP Delhi state president Saurabh Bhaadwaj stated, “It is a very strange thing that on the birth anniversary of Mata Savitribai Phule, portraits of Pandit Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya are being installed. If even a Dalit icon’s portrait had been installed today, we could have struck a blow against the stigma of casteism that has existed for thousands of years. But the Delhi government missed this opportunity and instead installed portraits of two Brahmins. When it comes to installing the portrait of a Dalit icon, they face so much discomfort that they initiated a privilege breach case against MLAs, some of whom are Dalits and from the AAP.”Meanwhile, AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar said, “A few days ago, a meeting was held in which we placed a proposal before the Assembly committee. Our MLAs said that Mata Savitribai Phule, whose birth anniversary is today, who opened the first school for women in this country, who faced immense atrocities yet never stopped educating women, should have her portrait installed inside the Delhi Assembly. I say this with great sadness that to suppress our voice, they initiated a privilege breach motion against our members, including against me personally, but they did not install Mata Savitribai Phule’s portrait there. Because she spoke about educating women. Because she came from the Dalit community and the backward community, her portrait was not installed.”Pointing to contrasting decisions, Kuldeep Kumar added, “Inside the Assembly, the entire government, along with the central government spent lakhs of rupees to install portraits of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malaviya. We have no objection to that. But we say this clearly that if you insult Dalit heroes and show hatred towards them, then we will not tolerate a BJP that insults Mata Savitribai Phule and refuses to install her portrait on her birth anniversary while installing portraits of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malaviya.
