Modi lauds Bengali actor ahead of birth centenary Paying tribute to Bengali actor Uttam Kumar ahead of his birth centenary, PM Modi Sunday described him as a versatile actor whose rise despite the failure of several early films offered the lesson to “Never give up”.In his Mann Ki Baat address, Modi said Kumar had become “deeply embedded in people’s hearts” through his acting. PM Modi expressed concern over the drug menace among India’s youth and urged content creators and influencers to campaign for a drug-free younger generation. NEW DELHI: Flagging the dangers of drug addiction and its impact on not just individuals but also families and society, PM Narendra Modi Sunday urged the youth to make “creative efforts” to strengthen campaigns against the menace, including through social media.“Can you come up with a powerful slogan for a drug-free India? Can our young musicians create songs that convey the message of a drug-free life? Can students and theatre groups write touching short plays that highlight the dangers of drugs while also showing the path to recovery? Our country has no shortage of excellent content creators. I urge them to create content in various languages that helps society in this endeavour,” Modi said in Mann Ki Baat, his monthly radio address. He urged young people and those in the creative field to share their work on social media using the relevant hashtag.“Often, creative efforts prove more impactful than formal campaigns. Let us all play our part in this noble mission to keep India’s youth away from drugs and free from addiction,” Modi said, while commending those who are spreading awareness and helping people struggling with addiction.PM also highlighted the economic opportunities opening up for women and girls in India, including in space sector, and the benefits of PM SVANidhi scheme, which provides subsidised loans to street vendors. He also lauded cleanliness initiatives undertaken by citizens across the country, including during Amarnath yatra.Referring to PM SVANidhi scheme, Modi said it was helping women street vendors expand their businesses, increase their incomes and improve their families’ financial prospects. “Women account for approximately 46% of beneficiaries of PM SVANidhi. Both sides agreed to establish a foreign minister-level coordination council to guide all aspects of cooperation under the elevated partnership.Following the talks that focused on expanding cooperation in defence and security, trade and investment, critical minerals, AI, agriculture and health, the two sides signed 11 MoUs. The areas covered included culture, education, mining, Ayurveda, tourism and restoration of Buddhist sites.PM Modi also underscored the need for zero tolerance against terrorism and extremism, saying a stronger India-Uzbekistan partnership will be a powerful force for peace, progress and prosperity in Central Asia.PM Modi and Mirziyoyev endorsed growing defence cooperation between the two countries, including through regular exchanges, capacity-building and joint activities, and expressed in a joint statement their commitment to address common security challenges by further strengthening such cooperation. Going forward, Modi said, both sides will promote direct linkages, co-production and co-development by the defence industries of both nations. “Close defence and security cooperation between our two countries reflects our deep mutual trust,” said the PM.Outlining an ambitious agenda for moving forward with “speed and tangible results” in this new phase of their partnership, the PM said both sides will also work systematically on market access, connectivity, banking and payment systems to achieve the target of billion of trade by 2030.“We will work together to boost win-win cooperation in infrastructure development. NEW DELHI: Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, a Supreme Court judge, Sunday said though Article 124(3) permitted appointment of ‘distinguished jurists’ as judges of the apex court, it was regrettable that this provision had remained one of our Constitution’s unused mandates.“No jurist has been appointed so far to SC though Constitution has completed more than 76 years,” he said, adding that either Centre earlier or the collegium thereafter was not convinced about the depth in Indian academia or had not seriously explored Article 124(3) so far.Addressing the convocation of LLM students at National Law University, Delhi, Justice Bhuyan said, “No legal academic has yet been appointed as a judge of SC, despite there being brilliant minds who could have made a substantial contribution had they become part of the bench.”Addressing the ‘lack of practical experience’ argument against elevation of jurists as judges, he said, “SC is not only the highest adjudicatory body but it is the moral, legal and constitutional conscience-keeper of the nation. Over 2.63L appear in NEET-PG; re-test announced for candidates at 2 Jaipur centres NEET-PG 2026 was conducted across the country on Sunday for nearly 2.7 lakh candidates appearing at 1,111 centres in 339 cities. A retest will be held on Sept 5 for 2,445 candidates at two centres in Jaipur as a glitch disrupted the examination.Dr Abhijat Sheth, president of National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, said there were no complaints of paper leak, or hacking, and that the examination was conducted in a fair and transparent manner with support from state govts, police, NBEMS experts and faculty members.3-member committee to probe power failure The NEET-PG 2026 examination was conducted across all 36 states and UTs.The affected candidates were at iON Digital Zone iDZ Sitapura centres, Jaipur, where the examination could not be completed due to an internal power supply problem. Despite repeated efforts, the issue could not be resolved, forcing National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to postpone the examination for the affected candidates.The health ministry has constituted a three-member committee to probe the power failure at the Jaipur centres. The panel comprises a senior Rajasthan govt official, a joint secretary-level officer from the health ministry and a chief engineer from the Central Electricity Authority.Dr Abhijat Sheth, president of NBEMS said re-examination for the 2,445 candidates will be conducted on Sept 5 at 3pm in Jaipur, with the board assuring that it will be conducted in the same manner and that the candidates’ performance would not be adversely affected. “We regret the inconvenience caused to the affected candidates,” he said.The nationwide examination was backed by extensive security and real-time monitoring. PM Narendra Modi may have a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan Monday, official sources said. While Modi landed in Bishkek Sunday, the president was scheduled to arrive Monday morning, according to reports from Tehran.Sources said efforts were on to schedule a meeting between the leaders Monday. This would be the first in-person meeting between Modi and Pezeshkian since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran on Feb 28.The two, in fact, had last met on the margins of the Brics summit in Russia’s Kazan in 2024. However, both have spoken with each other on several occasions, including after the West Asia conflict erupted, with Modi stressing the India remains a friend of Iran. Pezeshkian is also likely to visit India for the Brics summit next month.If it happens, the meeting will see Modi reiterate India’s position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He’s also expected to highlight India’s focus on ensuring the safety and well being of Indian nationals in the region, along with the importance of unhindered transit of energy and goods. It is an essential expression of citizenship, liberty and constitutional responsibility,” Justice Bhuyan said at a convocation ceremony at National Law University, Delhi.”If we want a democratic society that respects liberty and difference, that culture has to begin somewhere. It can only begin in our universities. A university… should be one of the first places where the habit of thinking freely begins,” he said.A university should be a space where an idea is not accepted merely because it is familiar and where students do not hesitate to ask difficult questions simply because the answer may be uncomfortable,” Justice Bhuyan said.He said India’s Constitution guarantees free speech, thinking and believing differently. “Intolerance begins to undermine that framework when disagreement or dissent is no longer treated as a legitimate difference of opinion but as something that must be silenced, rejected or punished. ‘In a democracy, the right to question is not an act of defiance.’: Justice Bhuyan NEW DELHI: In a constitutional democracy like India, govt must listen to citizens, give space for dissent, and have institutions that are accountable to society and do not treat every dissent as a threat, Supreme Court judge Ujjal Bhuyan said on Sunday.”In a democracy, the right to question is not an act of defiance. It is an essential expression of citizenship, liberty and constitutional responsibility,” Justice Bhuyan said at a convocation ceremony at National Law University, Delhi.”If we want a democratic society that respects liberty and difference, that culture has to begin somewhere. It can only begin in our universities. A university… should be one of the first places where the habit of thinking freely begins,” he said.A university should be a space where an idea is not accepted merely because it is familiar and where students do not hesitate to ask difficult questions simply because the answer may be uncomfortable,” Justice Bhuyan said.He said India’s Constitution guarantees free speech, thinking and believing differently. “Intolerance begins to undermine that framework when disagreement or dissent is no longer treated as a legitimate difference of opinion but as something that must be silenced, rejected or punished. The ability to live with disagreement is not merely a social virtue. NEW DELHI: For men, type 2 diabetes more often sets the stage for heart and kidney disease; for women, the greater threat appears to be mental health problems, a new study tracking nearly 29,000 patients has found.The study, published in PLOS Medicine, followed 28,720 people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2010 and 2020 using linked primary and secondary healthcare records in the UK. Researchers used a multi-state analysis to track the order and timing of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal disease and mental health conditions over a median follow-up of 6.8 years. Women were more likely than men to be diagnosed with a mental health condition.Women were more likely than men to be diagnosed with a mental health condition, including anxiety, depression or somatoform disorders, after developing diabetes. Men also experienced most complications earlier than women, while women generally had a later onset of events.The study linked diabetes, mental health and mortality, finding that people who developed a mental health condition after diabetes died earlier. Among those with the same disease trajectory, men died on average nine years younger than women.Despite this, women had higher average healthcare utilisation and long-term prescribing than men. Men also experienced most complications earlier than women, while women generally had a later onset of events.The study linked diabetes, mental health and mortality, finding that people who developed a mental health condition after diabetes died earlier. Among those with the same disease trajectory, men died on average nine years younger than women.Despite this, women had higher average healthcare utilisation and long-term prescribing than men.
