PM Modi, according to Rijiju, also said that “security and future of youth” is the government’s priority.The Prime Minister’s reaction comes in the backdrop of youth, led by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), protesting against the perpetual paper leaks, and alleged irregularities in the education system.The uproar over the NEET leak and lack of accountablity at the senior-most level exploded in the Captial on Monday as protestors, mostly students and youths, clashed with police — leading the cops to resort to lathi charge, firing of tear gas to disperse the protesting crowd marching towards the Parliament.The protestors had three main demands: Resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, discharging Sonam Wangchuk from hospital and providing compensation to the kin of NEET aspirants who died by suicide after the leak forced the government to reexamination.The Monday mayhemMany of those brought to both hospitals were discharged after receiving first aid.Officials at RML said that by 7 pm, the hospital’s surgery department had registered 65 medico-legal cases (MLCs) involving both protesters and police personnel. They added that detailed information on all cases was still being compiled.Hospital authorities also said around 10 MLCs involved people who had been on hunger strike. All of them were reported to be in stable condition.Sources at RML said nearly 40 of the injured brought to the hospital were police personnel, while the remaining patients were protesters. Around 35 people were admitted, with the rest treated and discharged. Between seven and eight patients required treatment in the hospital’s red zone because of the seriousness of their injuries.Among those admitted was a 20-year-old woman who suffered a hypoxic brain injury, a condition caused when the brain is deprived of adequate oxygen following severe trauma, hospital sources said.The exact circumstances in which she sustained her injuries remain unclear. According to hospital sources, she may have been injured during the clashes or after falling in the stampede that followed, but the sequence of events has not yet been established.Doctors said most of the remaining patients suffered bruises, baton injuries, head wounds and facial injuries, including split lips, forehead wounds and scalp lacerations. Although many had visible injuries to the head and face, no fractures were reported among patients treated at RML.At Lady Hardinge Medical College, at least 24 injured people were treated. Most were discharged after first aid, while those who arrived later in the evening continued to undergo medical evaluation. Two Premier Hospital RDAs Seek President’s Intervention Over Wangchuk Case (ANI images) NEW DELHI: A day after the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of AIIMS wrote to President Droupadi Murmu over the Jantar Mantar crackdown and the continued hospitalisation of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, the RDA of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday also sought the President’s intervention, raising concerns over patient autonomy, medical ethics, the independence of public healthcare institutions and the reported events at Jantar Mantar.In a four-page representation, the Safdarjung RDA said Wangchuk’s medical condition and the need for continued hospitalisation should remain matters of independent clinical judgement, but every competent patient is entitled to dignity, informed consent and treatment in accordance with established medical ethics and the Constitution.The association said reports suggesting Wangchuk, despite being a competent patient, was allegedly not permitted to avail Leave Against Medical Advice (LAMA), if accurate, raise “serious concerns regarding informed consent, personal liberty and constitutional rights”. Hospitals, it said, are institutions of healing and should not be perceived as places of detention except where restrictions are authorised by law and follow due process.The RDA also questioned the security arrangements at Safdarjung Hospital during Wangchuk’s admission. Referring to reports and publicly available visuals, it said restricted access to hospital areas, extensive deployment of security personnel and disruption of routine hospital functioning, if established, warranted an independent examination.It also called for an independent, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the reported events at Jantar Mantar, citing reports and videos indicating the use of force, including lathi charge and tear gas, against peaceful protesters. It added that hospital administrations must remain independent custodians of medical ethics and patient welfare and should never be perceived as aligned with non-medical or political interests.Describing its appeal as “not political”, the association urged the President to order an independent inquiry into the recent events, safeguard competent patients’ right to seek Leave Against Medical Advice wherever legally permissible, examine whether security arrangements at Safdarjung Hospital affected patient care and hospital functioning, ensure accountability if constitutional rights or medical ethics were violated, investigate allegations of excessive force against peaceful protesters and protect healthcare professionals from intimidation and violence.The Safdarjung RDA’s representation comes a day after the AIIMS RDA sought the President’s intervention over the Jantar Mantar incident and Wangchuk’s continued hospitalisation, raising concerns over patient autonomy, constitutional rights and medical ethics. A rival group led by leader of opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, which claims to be the “real Trinamool Congress”, is holding its own rally near the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road. The Congress, which originally spearheaded the 1993 agitation, is also organising a separate programme at Shahid Minar.Hours before Tuesday’s events, former chief minister Mamata Banerjee spent the night at her rally venue after her faction alleged that unidentified people had vandalised the stage, banners and sound system.Accompanied by senior party leaders including Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, Kalyan Banerjee and Dola Sen, Mamata remained at the venue overnight while party workers guarded the site until morning.Addressing supporters shortly before midnight, Mamata accused the BJP of trying to disrupt the programme.”Our workers are being stopped from coming to the meeting. Families of the martyrs are being intimidated by the police. Our stage has been vandalised, banners torn, and power and microphone lines cut. Around 60-65 BJP-backed goons, led by a criminal who is out on court orders, carried out the attack,” she alleged.Without naming chief minister Suvendu Adhikari, she claimed the state government was using the police and intimidation to prevent people from attending the gathering. However, the BJP denied the allegations.State minister Dilip Ghosh questioned why Trinamool leaders had remained at the venue throughout the night.”This is supposed to be a programme to honour martyrs, not a protest stage. They can sit there all night, but nobody is with them anymore. They betrayed the martyrs, their families and ultimately the people,” Ghosh said.July 21 Martyrs’ Day commemorates the killing of 13 Youth Congress workers who died in police firing during a march to Writers’ Buildings in Kolkata in 1993. Since 1994, Mamata Banerjee has observed the anniversary every year, and it has grown into the Trinamool Congress’ largest annual political event.This year’s observance carries added political significance because it is the first since the BJP defeated the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the party’s 15-year rule. It is also the first Martyrs’ Day after the Trinamool split into rival factions.Security has been tightened across central Kolkata as the three events are taking place close to one another. Police have set up barricades, diverted traffic, deployed drones and increased the number of personnel to prevent any clashes.The political atmosphere intensified further on Monday when chief minister Suvendu Adhikari tabled in the Assembly the long-pending judicial commission report into the 1993 police firing. Families of the martyrs are being intimidated by the police. Our stage has been vandalised, banners torn, and power and microphone lines cut. Around 60-65 BJP-backed goons, led by a criminal who is out on court orders, carried out the attack,” she alleged.Without naming chief minister Suvendu Adhikari, she claimed the state government was using the police and intimidation to prevent people from attending the gathering. However, the BJP denied the allegations.State minister Dilip Ghosh questioned why Trinamool leaders had remained at the venue throughout the night.”This is supposed to be a programme to honour martyrs, not a protest stage. They can sit there all night, but nobody is with them anymore. They betrayed the martyrs, their families and ultimately the people,” Ghosh said.July 21 Martyrs’ Day commemorates the killing of 13 Youth Congress workers who died in police firing during a march to Writers’ Buildings in Kolkata in 1993. Since 1994, Mamata Banerjee has observed the anniversary every year, and it has grown into the Trinamool Congress’ largest annual political event.This year’s observance carries added political significance because it is the first since the BJP defeated the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the party’s 15-year rule. It is also the first Martyrs’ Day after the Trinamool split into rival factions.Security has been tightened across central Kolkata as the three events are taking place close to one another. Police have set up barricades, diverted traffic, deployed drones and increased the number of personnel to prevent any clashes.The political atmosphere intensified further on Monday when chief minister Suvendu Adhikari tabled in the Assembly the long-pending judicial commission report into the 1993 police firing.
