The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea challenging a Bombay High Court ruling that the Workplace Harassment Act doesn’t apply to advocates. The court issued a notice of appeal, emphasizing that professional bodies should have internal complaints committees to ensure a safe workplace for women in the legal profession. NEW DELHI: SC on Friday agreed to hear Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association’s plea to make Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act applicable to sexual harassment complaints against advocates. It issued a notice of appeal against a Bombay high court judgment holding that the Act was not applicable to advocates.A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan issued notice on the petition and tagged it along with a similar petition filed earlier. The association said the HC judgment was against the principles laid down by the apex court, which had directed every professional body must have an internal complaints committee.Senior advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, appearing for the petitioner, said the HC judgment left women in the profession without remedies and no permanent grievance redress committee. She argued that the HC had adopted a narrow interpretation by holding that the POSH Act did not apply in the absence of an employer-employee relationship, and had ignored that the Act was a special law meant to ensure a safe and dignified workplace for women. The HC had ruled that the POSH Act did not apply to complaints by female advocate members of the Bar Council of India or the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, saying the Act applied only where there was an employer-employee relationship, and that Bar Councils could not be considered employers of advocates.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosTejas Crash: IAF Pilot Killed In Dubai Crash Identified As Wing Commander Namansh SyalDefence Experts Break Down Possible Causes Behind Tejas Fighter Jet Crash In DubaiPM Modi Gets Rousing Welcome From Indian Diaspora In Johannesburg Ahead Of G20 Summit | South Africa’‘I Am A Hindu’: Shashi Tharoor Evokes Swami Vivekananda To Tell The World What Hinduism Stands ForAmit Shah Says BSF Crushed 118 Pak Posts, He Issues Tough Security Message From Sindoor Van In KutchEx-CIA Reveals Savage Reply To Imran Khan’s PTI After Apology Demand Over His India-Pak War Analysis’All 140 MLAs Are Mine’: DK Shivakumar Amid Karnataka CM Speculation; Siddaramaiah RespondsKabul Turns To India As New Trade Partner Amid Pak Blockades And Push For Fresh Regional CorridorsTejas Crashes In Dubai Air Show Display As Massive Fireball Sparks Panic, Pilot Succumbs To InjuriesDeadly 5.5 Earthquake Rocks Bangladesh, Killing At Least Six, Triggers Widespread Panic Across Dhaka123PhotostoriesCan the 10-3-2-1 rule improve your sleep? Trade Unions Also Come Out Against Move NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi’s endorsement of the four labour codes Friday drew clear political fault lines, with govt projecting them as long-pending reforms while trade unions and Left parties warned of erosion of worker protections.Modi called the codes a significant step in overhauling India’s labour framework, stating: “Shramev Jayate! Today, our govt has given effect to the Four Labo-ur Codes. It is one of the most comprehensive and progressive labour-oriented reforms since Independence. It greatly empowers our workers. It also significantly simplifies compliance and promotes ‘Ease of Doing Business’.”He said the changes would provide “universal social security, minimum and timely payment of wages, safe workplaces and remunerative opportunities… especially Nari Shakti and Yuva Shakti” and help “accelerate our journey towards a Viksit Bharat”.Opposition parties and trade unions issued strong criticism. CPI(ML) Liberation in a statement said the four codes “though presented in the name of ‘labour reform,’ are essentially tools that codify modern slavery and exploitation for the benefit and profiteering of big businesses and corporate interests.”Demanding their immediate withdrawal, the Left party said the codes “drastically dilute industrial safety compliance, wage and welfare requirements” and raise thresholds in ways that reduce protections for a large section of workers. It called for public support for the Day of Resistance and Defiance on Nov 26, announced by central trade unions and Samyukt Kisan Morcha.A joint platform of 10 central trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS and CITU and SEWA, called the codes “deceptive fraud” on the working people and gave a call for a nationwide “combative resistance and defiance” on Nov 26. RSS-affiliate Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, however, termed the reforms “historical and revolutionary”. Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the codes ensure “the guarantee of minimum wages on time… guarantee of social security for 40 crore workers… guarantee of gratuity for fixed-term employees after one year… and 100% health security for workers in hazardous sectors.”External affairs minister S Jaishankar said on social media that “implementation of the four Labour Codes will empower India’s workers by providing them with better wages, social security, safe working conditions and equal opportunities… The historic decision will boost investm-ent, enable ease of doing business and make India’s workforce a partner in the journey towards #ViksitBharat.” BJP described the rollout as a structural update to labour governance, saying: “India is transforming its labour landscape through simplified compliance, universal ESIC coverage, formalised employment, and a statutory right to minimum wages.”End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosTejas Crash: IAF Pilot Killed In Dubai Crash Identified As Wing Commander Namansh SyalDefence Experts Break Down Possible Causes Behind Tejas Fighter Jet Crash In DubaiPM Modi Gets Rousing Welcome From Indian Diaspora In Johannesburg Ahead Of G20 Summit | South Africa’‘I Am A Hindu’: Shashi Tharoor Evokes Swami Vivekananda To Tell The World What Hinduism Stands ForAmit Shah Says BSF Crushed 118 Pak Posts, He Issues Tough Security Message From Sindoor Van In KutchEx-CIA Reveals Savage Reply To Imran Khan’s PTI After Apology Demand Over His India-Pak War Analysis’All 140 MLAs Are Mine’: DK Shivakumar Amid Karnataka CM Speculation; Siddaramaiah RespondsKabul Turns To India As New Trade Partner Amid Pak Blockades And Push For Fresh Regional CorridorsTejas Crashes In Dubai Air Show Display As Massive Fireball Sparks Panic, Pilot Succumbs To InjuriesDeadly 5.5 Earthquake Rocks Bangladesh, Killing At Least Six, Triggers Widespread Panic Across Dhaka123PhotostoriesCan the 10-3-2-1 rule improve your sleep? The prize, launched by The Bicester Collection, drew more than 2,900 applications from over 40 countries across South Asia. Eleven founders were shortlisted for the final pitch in London, where Cognitii was named one of six winners.Founded by Jhillika Trisal from Gurugram, Falguni Shrivastava from Raipur, and Souvik Ghosh from Kolkata, Cognitii is building what it calls India’s first AI plus human infrastructure layer for special education. The founders, who have lived experience of autism and ADHD, began the company to address gaps they had seen in India’s systems. The team points to a critical national challenge: more than 80% of children with disabilities remain unidentified before age eight, limiting access to education, rehabilitation, and employment.Cognitii’s platform combines early screening tools, a mobile-first learning system, an educator co-pilot, and policy-grade dashboards for state agencies. The tools integrate with public data systems such as UDISE+ and Samagra Shiksha, allowing govts to track disability prevalence, inclusion outcomes, and the use of budgets. The company says it is designed for low-resource classrooms, with offline capability and multilingual support. The startup’s pilots are ongoing in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and other school systems. With the award, Cognitii plans wider govt deployments, deeper rural outreach, and the creation of what it calls India’s first disability data layer. The team says this will help shape policy and guide hiring and budget decisions in the coming years.“This win is a turning point, not just for Cognitii, but for millions of children who remain invisible in our systems. The Unlock Her Future Prize gives us the platform and resources to scale our work with governments and low-income schools, and to build the national infrastructure India needs for early screening, support, and inclusion,” the founders said in a joint statement, shared with TOI.The Unlock Her Future Prize supports women entrepreneurs working on solutions for people and the planet.
