CBI arrested former CEOs of Reliance Commercial Finance Limited (RCFL) and Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL) NEW DELHI: The CBI arrested former CEOs of Reliance Commercial Finance Limited (RCFL) and Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL) on Monday in connection with separate cases pertaining to an alleged fraud of Rs 7,623 crore in multiple public sector banks, officials said.The CBI has arrested former RCFL director and chief executive officer Devang Mody and former executive director and CEO of RHFL Ravindra Sudhalkar, they said.”In RCFL case, the accused have caused a loss of Rs 4,097 crore to 13 Public Sector Banks (PSBs), whereas in RHFL, the loss amount is Rs 3,526 crore to 10 PSBs,” a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.The CBI probe has shown that Mody, who was the CEO of RCFL from April 2017 to December 2018, “was a key decision-maker” responsible for managing the operations of the company, the agency said.”He approved loans to intermediary and conduit companies despite being aware that such lending was contrary to RBI guidelines and the sanction conditions governing borrowings from Public Sector Banks,” the statement said.Sudhalkar served as the ED and CEO of RHFL from October 1, 2016, to March 31, 2022, it said.”He was a key decision-maker responsible for managing the operations of Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL). He approved loans to intermediary and conduit companies despite such lending being contrary to the company’s lending policies, NHB/RBI guidelines and the conditions governing borrowings from Public Sector Banks,” the statement said.The agency alleged that the accused diverted funds borrowed by RCFL and RHFL to Reliance ADA Group companies, including Reliance Capital Limited, Reliance Infrastructure Limited and Reliance Power Limited, thereby causing a combined wrongful loss of Rs 7,623 crore to the lending banks and corresponding wrongful gain to themselves and related entities.The CBI has registered seven FIRs against Reliance Communications Limited (RCom), RHFL, RCFL and Reliance Telecom Limited (RTL), based on complaints received from various PSBs and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).The agency has arrested five persons in Reliance ADA Group-related cases. NEW DELHI: The Bihar government has announced a judicial inquiry into the controversial police encounter that killed 28-year-old activist Bharat Bhushan Tiwari in Bhojpur district, as questions continue to be raised over the circumstances surrounding his death.Tiwari was shot during a standoff with police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel on June 17. While police claim he opened fire on officers, a video circulated on social media appears to show him throwing away his pistol moments before the shooting, prompting allegations that he was killed after surrendering, ANI reported.The incident has triggered a political storm in Bihar, with opposition parties demanding accountability and the state government ordering an independent probe led by a retired High Court judge.Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi and leader of opposition in the Assembly Tejashwi Yadav returned all security personnel deployed outside their official residences in Patna.According to police, Tiwari had posted videos displaying an illegal weapon and threatening local officials. On June 16, Bhojpur Police issued a statement describing him as “mentally unstable” and said efforts were underway to disarm him and shift him to a mental health facility for treatment.The following day, a standoff involving local police and the Special Task Force (STF) ended with Tiwari being shot. Police claimed he fired eight to ten rounds from an illegal pistol at officers, forcing them to retaliate in self-defence.However, a Facebook Live video recorded shortly before the shooting has fuelled controversy. The footage appears to show Tiwari standing in an open field, speaking to the camera and throwing away his pistol towards police personnel. His family and several local residents argue that the video indicates he had surrendered and was unarmed when he was shot.Judicial probe ordered as political pressure mountsFacing growing public outrage, the Bihar government has ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.Addressing reporters, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Sudhanshu Kumar said: “A case is registered in the matter. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Shahbad has been appointed to oversee the investigation. Furthermore, an inquiry committee has been formed under a retired judge of the High Court to ensure an impartial and transparent probe into the case.”The government has also suspended four police personnel, including the local Station House Officer (SHO), pending the outcome of the investigation.On Monday, chief minister Samrat Choudhary reiterated that his government would take a tough stance against crime while promising accountability.”The Bihar government will not bow before criminals. Anyone committing a crime will not be spared under any circumstances. Mumbai, Jun 22 (ANI): Shiv Sena UBT MPs joined Shiv Sena in the presence of Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde, in Mumbai on Monday. (ANI Video Grab) NEW DELHI: After six rebel Lok Sabha MPs from Shiv Sena (UBT) formally joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, senior Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam on Monday alleged that another MP was poised to desert Uddhav Thackeray but backed out after Shinde rejected his demand for a cabinet berth.Speaking to reporters in Mumbai shortly after Shinde inducted the Sena (UBT) dissidents, Kadam remarked: “A seventh MP has also signed in the paper but he demanded a cabinet post to which Eknath Shinde declined. He went back after that.”While refusing to identify the individual, Kadam offered a clue, suggesting that the individual sits next to Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. Three of his close aides now constitute Sena (UBT)’s entire Lok Sabha contingent — Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai and Rajabhau Waje.The party’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Raut, is also among Thackeray’s closest confidants.Meanwhile, Kadam also recalled the June 2022 split in the then-undivided Shiv Sena. The rebellion, led by Shinde, also brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition government in Maharashtra.”Back in 2022, there were 40 MLAs, including 10 ministers, and Eknath Shinde pledged that he would bring them all back. He succeeded in securing the support of 60 MLAs, and now six MPs have joined us to support development in their respective constituencies.
