Photo credit: ANI NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Monday hit out at “TMC’s goons” in West Bengal, accusing them of switching off streetlights during her roadshow in Kolkata and alleging an attempt to disrupt the event and create a security risk.Speaking to reporters, the Delhi CM said the fear once experienced by the public under the Trinamool Congress government had now shifted to its supporters. She alleged that the lights were turned off to disrupt her rally, but claimed the crowd responded by lighting up the area with mobile flashlights.”This is a good thing that the fear and terror the public once felt because of the TMC government has now shifted to TMC’s own goons because of the people. Out of fear of our rally and this election campaign, they switched off the lights in the entire locality to stop the roadshow,” she said.”But the public responded—they turned on their mobile lights and gave their blessings and love. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Now the people of Bengal are ready to extend their support. This darkness will not last. The darkness that the TMC government wants in people’s lives will end. The sun will rise, and the lotus will bloom,” she added.Rekha Gupta was campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on April 23 and 29, with results set to be declared on May 4.She expressed confidence that the BJP would come to power in the state. In the case of India, however, Khalistan extremism was identified as a major national security threat to Canada, a point New Delhi has belaboured with Ottawa for long. The report by Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) comes in the middle of efforts by PM Mark Carney to repair the relationship with India that saw him visiting the country earlier this year. In the past 12 months, Carney and his counterpart Narendra Modi have successfully managed to drag the relationship out of a deep freeze that it had descended into over the killing of a Khalistan separatist — Hardeep Singh Nijjar — allegedly by Indian agents in 2023.Election Results 2026Election results: From Mamata to Vijayan, top leaders face crucial mandate testWest Bengal election results: Who wins Bengal? However, the latest report has significantly tempered down its earlier references to India. The 2025 report says that “historically” India has cultivated covert relationships with Canadian politicians, journalists and members of the Indo-Canadian community to exert its influence and advance its interests. This, it said, “transnational repression activities, such as surveillance and other coercive tactics meant to suppress criticism of the Government of India and create fear in the community.”However, unlike the last time, there was no mention of the Nijjar issue in the report or what it had described last year as escalation in India’s repression efforts against the Khalistan movement. On Khalistan, the report said that some CBKEs (Canada-Based Khalistani Extremists) were well connected to Canadian citizens “who leverage Canadian institutions to promote their violent extremist agenda and collect funds from unsuspecting community members that are then diverted toward violent activities.”The report also flagged threat from Sikh extremists who, it said, use Canada as a base to “promote, fundraise or plan violence primarily in India”Follow the latest election results 2026, live updates, winner lists, constituency-wise results, party-wise trends and full coverage for Tamil Nadu election results, West Bengal election results, Kerala election results, Assam election results and Puducherry election results on Times of India.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosNepal Objects To India-China Plan To Conduct Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via LipulekhIndia-Linked LPG Tanker MT Sarv Shakti Heads To Visakhapatnam After Crossing HormuzPassenger Opens Emergency Exit Door On Air Arabia Flight While Taxiing At Chennai Airport, ArrestedAhead Of Counting, Gunmen Open Fire At BJP Leader’s House In Bengal’s Noapara‘I Am Also A Victim’: Vinesh Phogat Identifies As Complainant In Brij Bhushan Sexual Harassment CaseBJP MP Sandeep Pathak Claims ‘No Information’ On FIRs, Alleges Misuse Of State Machinery In PunjabIndian Startup Launches Mission Drishti, World’s First OptoSAR Satellite, Aboard SpaceX Falcon 9Diljit Dosanjh Confronts Khalistan Supporters at Calgary Concert, Explains KBC AppearanceDelhi Approves ₹48,000 Crore Metro Expansion Plan To Connect Outer Regions With City CoreVietnam President To Lam’s First State Visit To India: What It Means For New Delhi-Hanoi Ties123PhotostoriesMorning affirmation at 5 am: Thoughts that hit different when the world is still asleepYou’re brushing your teeth wrong: What dentist says most people missHow to make Pudina Paratha for summer breakfast5 Bengali breads every foodie should try5 rare watches from Sachin Tendulkar’s collection you should knowYou’re walking, but not like this: How interval walking improves fitness naturallySubtle signs you might be vitamin D deficient, and what your body is trying to tell youRed vs green Apple: How to choose the right one for your health goalsRihanna to Katy Perry: 7 most bizarre Met Gala looks that stole the spotlightBhagavad Gita lessons to overcome life’s challenges and stay happy123Hot PicksAssam key constituenciesKerala key constituenciesPuducherry election resultsTamil Nadu constituenciesAjay Pal SharmaBengal Poll RecordHimanta Biswa SarmaTop TrendingWest Bengal Assembly Election ResultsAssam Assembly Election ResultsTamil Nadu Assembly Election ResultsKerala Assembly Election ResultsPuducherry Assembly Election ResultsPetrol, Diesel, LPG priceCBSE Class 12th ResultNEET 2026: Exam-day guideBSE AP SSC Class 10th ResultIPL Orange Cap
