BENGALURU: India’s space missions may grab headlines at liftoff, but their real test begins only after the rocket falls silent. Mission operations, the long, invisible phase that keeps satellites alive for years, will define the next phase of the country’s space ambitions, Isro chairman V Narayanan said here on Wednesday.Speaking at the Spacecraft Mission Operations (SMOPs) conference, Narayanan underlined that while launches last barely 15 to 25 minutes, spacecraft must function reliably for years, sometimes up to 15. “Ensuring that the spacecraft remains fully operational in orbit… continuous monitoring, simulations, and command operations. This is a very important domain,” he said, placing mission operations at the centre of future space efforts.Narayanan spoke at a time Isro is reeling under launch failures and project delays that have come under criticism, especially given that the Indian space programme is transitioning from milestone-driven missions to sustained space activity. He pointed to three major achievements since the last SMOPs conference: the successful docking experiment in space, the Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing, and the Aditya-L1 solar mission. He described the docking experiment as particularly complex, involving two satellites moving at speeds exceeding 15,000 kmph being brought together with precision. “Any wrong command… you know what will be the end result,” he said, highlighting the risks involved. On Chandrayaan-3, Narayanan credited the mission operations teams for executing an autonomous landing sequence near the Moon’s south pole. He also noted India’s entry into an elite group of nations with the Aditya-L1 mission to study the Sun.The chairman stressed that mission operations are not limited to a single team but involve designers, software engineers, and systems specialists working together. He called their role “very significant” and often under-recognised.Looking ahead, Narayanan said technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud-based ground systems will become critical. “What was considered advanced 10 to 15 years ago is now the need of the hour,” he said.He also placed mission operations within the broader context of India’s expanding space ecosystem, pointing to increased participation from private players and start-ups. Private companies are contributing to both technological capability and talent development, he said.On human spaceflight, a programme that has seen multiple timelines announced by the Centre and Isro slip, Narayanan described it as “not just another activity” but a major step requiring sustained operational precision. Drawing a parallel with April 12, 1961 — the date of the first human spaceflight — he noted that India is now preparing for its own crewed missions. As Isro moves towards more complex missions, including future Chandrayaan-4 and 5 projects and human spaceflight, Narayanan’s message was clear: success will depend less on the spectacle of launch and more on the discipline of operations that follow.About the AuthorChethan KumarChethan Kumar is a Senior Assistant Editor with the Times of India. Cap duty hours, ensure rest for resident doctors: Parliamentary panel NEW DELHI: Flagging risks to patient safety, a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare has raised concern over “excessive continuous duty hours” for junior and senior resident doctors, warning that fatigue-driven errors and burnout could compromise care.In its latest report, the panel has recommended that the government introduce and strictly enforce a formal “Clinical Duty Hours Regulation” policy. This should mandate fixed rest periods and monitored duty rosters, with oversight mechanisms to prevent violations.Drawing a parallel with aviation safety norms, the committee said healthcare must adopt similar fatigue management standards to reduce the risk of errors. “Safety-critical professions like civil aviation enforce strict duty hours to prevent fatigue-induced accidents,” the report noted, arguing that patient care demands comparable safeguards. The recommendation comes amid growing concern over long, unregulated shifts in teaching hospitals, where residents often work extended hours with limited rest. The panel warned that such conditions not only increase the likelihood of clinical mistakes but also contribute to burnout and mental health stress among young doctors. The issue has also been flagged by doctors’ groups. In a representation to the health ministry, the United Doctors Front (UDF) pointed out that existing norms under the Uniform Residency Scheme, 1992 already cap work at 48 hours a week and not more than 12 hours per shift, but these are widely flouted across institutions. The group has urged the government to issue binding instructions and create accountability mechanisms, including a high-level review to align medical duty hours with global safety standards. The committee’s observations gain urgency against the backdrop of rising concern over mental health issues among medical students and residents, with recent reports highlighting high stress levels and burnout. The panel has made it clear that regulating doctors’ duty hours is not just a labour issue but a patient safety imperative, and called for enforceable, monitored standards rather than advisory norms.About the AuthorAnuja JaiswalAnuja Jaiswal is a Senior Assistant Editor at The Times of India, with an impressive 18-year career in narrative journalism. DEHRADUN: A 29-year-old man from J&K’s Baramulla district was allegedly detained by “authorities in Saudi Arabia” after he was picked up on March 25 from a health facility in Dammam, where he used to work as a ‘nurse specialist’, over a “social media post on Iran’s late supreme leader”. Incidentally, days later, Amjad Ali Bhat’s family back home in Kashmir is still struggling to know his whereabouts and has contacted embassies and govt authorities.“We only came to know about his detention when we called his contact number on March 25. It was attended by his colleague and roommate from Tamil Nadu who told us that Amjad was on his day shift at the workplace when he was picked up by ‘local authorities’,” Amjad’s elder sister, Shahida, told TOI on Tuesday.Amjad had gone to Saudi last June to join a company in Dammam. His father, Ghulam Ali, said: “Amjad’s colleague claimed that the ‘authorities’ didn’t cite any reason behind his detention nor informed him about the charges. They didn’t share the whereabouts of the detention centre or police station. We have absolutely no information about him now and are worried amid the West Asia crisis.”Ali said that “after checking his social media, we suspect that he was detained due to a post uploaded by him on his Facebook account on late Khamenei on March 3”. The Indian embassy has replied stating that they have taken up their matter with Saudi authorities, she added.
