NEW DELHI: During a search in Kolkata at seven premises on Wednesday in an ongoing money laundering probe against Merlin group, a real estate developer, the ED has found the builder having associations with some senior politicians and bureaucrats from Bengal. “The role of these public servants and their financial transactions with the real estate group and its promoters are under scrutiny,” sources in ED said. The action comes ahead of polls in WB, with voting scheduled for April 23 and April 29. Officials aware of the probe said the agency has seized some “incriminating digital devices and documents from the builder’s premises that reveal his deep nexus with state officials and politicians”. To further establish a money trail in its ongoing investigation, ED is examining Merlin group promoter Sushil Mohta, Saket Mohta and other related entities. Sources said the agency is examining some documents which were fabricated to fraudulently grab various parcels of land in Kolkata, including public land too. “Subsequently, the accused people commercially exploited the land by launching large-scale real estate projects. By projecting themselves as lawful owners on the strength of forged documents, they have induced the public to invest substantial sums in their projects,” a senior official said.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘Glimmer Of Hope’: Mauritius PM Hails India’s Support Amid Iran Crisis, Eyes Key Oil And Gas DealElection Season Kicks Off With Record Voter Turnout In Assam, Puducherry As Kerala Clocks 77% VotingIndia Withdraws Bid To Host COP33 In 2028 — Here’s Why The Government ReconsideredIndia Ramps Up Gulf Outreach: Hardeep Puri Heads To Qatar, Jaishankar to UAE After US-Iran TruceAre You A ‘Worker’ Or Just An Employee? PM Modi KOLKATA: Bengal’s favourite ‘maachh-bhaat’ filled the poll plate on Thursday as PM Narendra Modi accused Trinamool Congress of failing to feed the piscine-loving state enough fish, seeking to turn on its head a debate triggered by CM Mamata Banerjee’s party portraying BJP as being “anti-non-vegetarian”. In Haldia, where he addressed the first of his three poll rallies for the day, the PM spoke extensively about Bengal underperforming in fish production under successive TMC govts. “In 15 years, TMC couldn’t even give you fish. We created a separate ministry for fisheries,” Modi said. “Bihar and Assam used to import fish. Now, they are self-sufficient, having doubled their fish production. Bengal will also become self-reliant if BJP is voted to office.” Mamata responded to PM Modi’s comments on “inadequate” fish production by insisting that the dependence on imports from Andhra and Bihar “has gone”. “You don’t let people speak in Bengali. And then you come here to give us a lesson in fish production. You needn’t worry about fish production in Bengal. First, answer why Bengalis in other states are stopped from eating fish or meat. I am not saying everyone must eat non-vegetarian food, but diet should be a matter of personal choice,” she said. Modi followed up his fish dig at TMC in Haldia by contrasting the party’s alleged strategy of governing by “fear” with BJP’s focus on building “trust”, saying Bengal had become “a factory of infiltrators and bombs”. The PM bemoaned what he termed “lack of industrialisation and jobs”, blaming its “reign of fear and intimidation” for industry taking flight. “The nation is exporting weapons made in India, but TMC has opened a cottage industry for crude bombs here,” he said, also accusing the governing party of encouraging cattle smuggling. He said Mamata govt stalled central projects worth Rs 75,000 crore in state out of spite. Sunetra Pawar PUNE/MUMBAI: Just an hour was left for withdrawal of nominations on Thursday when the Congress finally responded to requests from the Pawar family and the Mahayuti partners and dropped its candidate against NCP chief and deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar in the Baramati bye-election. Twenty-two independent candidates still remain in the contest, but now there is no major challenge to the widow of Ajit Pawar, whose death in an aeroplane crash on Jan 28 has necessitated the bypoll. Polling is to be conducted on April 23 and votes will be counted on May 4. Maharashtra Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sunetra Pawar, and NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and MLA Rohit Pawar spoke to senior Congress party leaders to persuade the party not to field a candidate in Baramati, a constituency Ajit Pawar had been representing since 1991. Even NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, who had earlier said the Congress was not wrong in contesting the Baramati bypoll, now advised his alliance partner to withdraw. “Maharashtra lost a talented politician like Ajit Pawar. The Baramati seat fell vacant due to a tragic accident and against this backdrop, my advice to the Congress would be to not contest the seat. It is a national party and we can at most appeal to them. Ultimately, it must decide,” Sharad Pawar said. Rohit Pawar met state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal in Mumbai requesting withdrawal, after which another delegation of NCP leaders, including MLA Sana Malik, met him for the same purpose. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis called Sapkal on the phone. “I requested Sapkal to follow the tradition of Maharashtra and withdraw from Baramati the way BJP did after the death of former home minister R R Patil,” he said.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘Glimmer Of Hope’: Mauritius PM Hails India’s Support Amid Iran Crisis, Eyes Key Oil And Gas DealElection Season Kicks Off With Record Voter Turnout In Assam, Puducherry As Kerala Clocks 77% VotingIndia Withdraws Bid To Host COP33 In 2028 — Here’s Why The Government ReconsideredIndia Ramps Up Gulf Outreach: Hardeep Puri Heads To Qatar, Jaishankar to UAE After US-Iran TruceAre You A ‘Worker’ Or Just An Employee?
