World Cup-winning women’s cricket team members Amanjot Kaur and Harleen Deol were welcomed with sweets and beats of the dhol by their families and top leaders of Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as they landed at their home base here on Friday. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side scripted a defining moment for Indian women’s cricket by winning its maiden global title — the 50-over World Cup — with a 52-run victory over South Africa in the final in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and AAP MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer were among the ruling party leaders present at the airport to receive the two players and accord them a grand welcome. The family members of the two players and several fans were also present, eagerly waiting for their arrival. Soon after they came out of the airport, Cheema and Hayer offered the two players sweets and honoured them by presenting shawls. Speaking to reporters, Amanjot said, “This victory is of entire India, entire Punjab.” She also said that the team members did not sleep after the semi-final win over mighty Australia. “Later, on the day of the (final) victory too, we did not sleep,” she said. Deol said her family always supported her dreams. “Girls can bring laurels when given freedom and opportunity. My family always supported me. I want to give a message to parents that give freedom to your daughters … I want to tell girls that they must follow their passion and work hard,” Deol said. “We had belief that we will do well and lift the Cup”. Hayer, who earlier also served as Sports Minister in the AAP government in Punjab before contesting last year’s Lok Sabha polls, said the state government has a sports-friendly approach. Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “On behalf of the Punjab government, I welcome all the daughters, they are making us proud. The daughters are bringing laurels in other sports too at various international competitions”. This has turned the vote in what should have been the Trinamool’s zone of comfort into a battle of arithmetic and nerves, with the party in office trying to cash in on an anti-SIR sentiment, the opposition BJP trying to cash in on an anti-incumbency sentiment and both parties trying to crystal-gaze into what an unprecedented voter turnout may mean.Majority of TMC cabinet ministers in fray Conventionally, a voter-turnout bump has meant a larger vote share for the anti-incumbent. But, when the voter-turnout bump enters a zone where it has never gone before (as what happened in the 152 seats that voted in the first phase and what may happen again today because of SIR fears), conventional calculations can go awry. Both parties’ poll managers seem to have understood this though their leaderships’ public broadcasts may have been more swag and brag. The seven districts going to vote today – Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly and East Burdwan – have been Trinamool’s bastion, with some pockets of resistance concentrated in a few places in North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Hooghly. The BJP has enjoyed a degree of popularity with sections of voters: Matuas in Nadia and North 24 Parganas, the non-Bengali-speaking population in the industrial belt in North 24 Parganas and largely agrarian areas in some pockets of Hooghly. The ISF, likewise, is confined to a belt in the Bhangar-Canning belt on the southern fringes of Kolkata. But, largely, these seven districts have held the key to Nabanna for the Trinamool. Tamil Nadu CM Vijay; DMK supremo MK Stalin NEW DELHI: DMK supremo MK Stalin on Tuesday hit out at Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay over the arrest of a party MLA, warning that the people would teach the ruling TVK a “befitting lesson” if it tried to “cover up its misrule” through arrests.”If this government thinks it can cover up its misrule with arrests, the people themselves will teach a fitting lesson to such arrogance,” Stalin, Vijay’s predecessor as chief minister, said in an X post.He referred to an editorial in an English daily that criticised the TVK-led Tamil Nadu government for initiating criminal proceedings over political criticism.Stalin’s remarks came amid an escalating confrontation between the ruling TVK and the principal opposition DMK.
