(Picture credit: KDFW FOX 4 via AP) At least three people, including a child, were killed and five others injured in a gas explosion that triggered a massive fire and destroyed a two-storey apartment building in Dallas’s Oak Cliff neighbourhood on Thursday. As firefighters worked the scene, friends and relatives of residents gathered nearby, many unable to reach their loved ones. The building, located south of downtown Dallas, was reduced to a blackened shell. A towering plume of black smoke was visible for miles, as reported by the AP.Dallas Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Mark Berry said crews were already responding to a reported gas leak when the blast occurred. “We had the cavalry coming,” Berry said. “But the explosion had already taken place.”Atmos Energy, the local natural gas provider, said in a statement that fire officials informed them a construction crew, unrelated to the company, had damaged a pipeline near the site. Natural gas service to the area was shut off. Company officials were working with investigators on-site.Resident Kacee Proctor said her mother had smelled gas inside the building a day earlier, but she did not think much of it at the time. Proctor was not home during the explosion. She was devastated that her cat, Shirley, was trapped inside the wreckage. “I’ve been sitting over there crying for several hours. I don’t know what to do. This is all I have right here,” she said, gesturing to the clothes she was wearing. She spent the afternoon talking with neighbors who had evacuated. Among them was a girl who had been home babysitting her younger sister. The girl carried both the child and their dog to safety.Dozens of firefighters swarmed the scene. Some trained hoses on smoldering debris. Others removed burned lumber and wreckage by hand, searching for anyone trapped underneath. Dallas Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief James Russ gave an update from the scene. “The fire is contained, but our members are still working on the scene to do primary searches,” he said.Spokesperson Jason Evans said crews had hand-searched less than half the scene by late Thursday. Some areas would require excavation. He did not rule out finding more victims. It was also unclear how many residents had been living in the complex at the time of the explosion. “This was enormous,” Evans said of the fire.Authorities set up a family reunification center at a nearby high school. Hours after the blast, Frances Rizo was still trying to reach a friend who lived in the building. “She’s not answering her phone,” Rizo said.Neighbors described the force of the explosion. Julie Jensen lived less than a block away. She was sitting on her couch watching television when the blast hit. “Stuff flew off our walls,” she said. She looked outside and saw smoke rising and neighbors running. She grabbed her cat and left, waiting in a nearby parking lot until it was safe to return.Sal De La Rosa was at work at a nearby auto repair shop. “All of a sudden, we just heard and felt this huge boom. We felt where the building kind of shook a little bit,” he said. A co-worker stepped outside and saw thick black smoke rising into the air.About the AuthorTOI World DeskAt TOI World Desk, our dedicated team of seasoned journalists and passionate writers tirelessly sifts through the vast tapestry of global events to bring you the latest news and diverse perspectives round the clock. NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha speaker and Rajya Sabha chairman have rejected the opposition’s notice for a motion for the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after a “careful and objective assessment of all relevant aspects and issues involved”, a move bound to deepen acrimony between the governing NDA and its opponents amid their campaign blitzkrieg for five assembly polls. As many as 130 LS and 63 RS members — more than required under rules — from opposition parties had filed the notice on March 13 in their respective Houses, seeking Kumar’s ouster for his alleged partisan and discriminatory conduct, especially in the SIR drive. An LS bulletin said, “After due consideration of the notice of motion and a careful and objective assessment of all relevant aspects and issues involved therein, the speaker (Om Birla) in exercise of powers vested to him under section 3 of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, has refused to admit the said notice of motion.”RS issued a similar bulletin on behalf of chairman C P Radhakrishnan. Though the bulletin did not specify the ground for rejection, officials said it is a common practice. The notice, signed by opposition INDIA bloc members and some other BJP rivals like AAP had the requisite support — which is at least 100 LS and 50 RS MPs.Parliament is set to meet on April 16 for three days to take up bills related to implementation of women’s reservation in LS and state assemblies from the 2029 general polls, and rejection of the opposition’s move against the CEC is expected to trigger a fresh round of clash between the two sides. While Congress’s Jairam Ramesh in a cryptic post said, “We know what happened to the last RS chairman who accepted a petition moved by opposition MPs”, TMC’s Derek O’ Brien said, “Ah! I told you so. Notice to remove CEC ‘Vanish Kumar’ by RS MPs rejected. Reason? No reason given. BJP keep mocking our great Parliament.”If opposition parties, especially TMC that was at the forefront of rallying support for the notice, raise the issue in their poll campaign to press their claim of constitutional institutions having been allegedly compromised under BJP, the governing party will flag the issue as an endorsement of CEC’s functioning from Parliament’s presiding chairs. After Congress had led a move to file a notice for Birla’s removal, which was admitted and defeated by voice vote in LS, TMC was believed to have nudged the main opposition party to join it in making a similar move against Kumar.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosManipur Erupts Again After Deadly Blast Kills 2 Children; Curfew Imposed, Internet Shutdown’Avoid Military Areas, Stay Indoors’: India Issues Advisory For Indians In Iran As Tensions RiseManipur Erupts Again: Curfew, Internet Shutdown As Violence Returns Over Killing Of Two ChildrenTejas Back In Air After Setbacks, But Reliability And Delays Raise Fresh Questions’Target Of Akhand Bharat’: Pakistan Senator Sounds Alarm Over Growing India-UAE Ties’At The Behest Of Mamata’: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s Shocking Claim On Pakistan’s Kolkata ThreatIndia Seeks US Waiver On Chabahar Amid Conflict; Iran Envoy Hints At Key Port Revival After WarBJP Calls Kharge’s ‘Snake’ Remark Dangerous, Alleges Communal ProvocationAssam Passport Row Turns Personal: Himanta Sarma Takes ‘Peda’ Jibe At Pawan Khera, Congress Responds’Pakistan Will Be Divided Into…’: Rajnath Singh’s Strong Response To Khawaja Asif’s Kolkata Threat123Photostories6 quick blooming flowers to sow in April10 couple-inspired house name ideas that add a personal touchHow to make protein-rich Egg Poha for breakfast at home8 animals that shed their skin in the most surprising waysYou have heard of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol: But what if that’s not the full story and you’re reading it wrong?5 cheapest Indian states to buy gold in 202610 short baby girl names inspired by beautiful flowersFrom Divyanka Tripathi to Karishma Tanna confirming their pregnancies to Surbhi Jyoti flaunting her baby bump; TV actresses who are all set to embrace motherhoodWhy this is the only Indian dish among the 50 Best Bean Dishes in the World5 fun and unusual vacation ideas for the summer holidays in India123Hot PicksShreyas Iyer SisterUpdated IPL Points TablePurple cap winnerOrange cap winnerIPL Points TablePublic holidays April 2026Bank Holidays AprilTop TrendingTaylor Swift and Travis Kelce RelationshipIPL 2026Donald TrumpSheldon KeefeUS stocks todayIran AdvisoryCarlos AlcarazIPL Points TableSchool Holidays in AprilKarnataka 2nd PUC Exam Result Date

Sunetra Pawar PUNE/MUMBAI: Just an hour was left for withdrawal of nominations on Thursday when the Congress finally responded to requests from the Pawar family and the Mahayuti partners and dropped its candidate against NCP chief and deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar in the Baramati bye-election. Twenty-two independent candidates still remain in the contest, but now there is no major challenge to the widow of Ajit Pawar, whose death in an aeroplane crash on Jan 28 has necessitated the bypoll. Polling is to be conducted on April 23 and votes will be counted on May 4. Maharashtra Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sunetra Pawar, and NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and MLA Rohit Pawar spoke to senior Congress party leaders to persuade the party not to field a candidate in Baramati, a constituency Ajit Pawar had been representing since 1991. Even NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, who had earlier said the Congress was not wrong in contesting the Baramati bypoll, now advised his alliance partner to withdraw. “Maharashtra lost a talented politician like Ajit Pawar. The Baramati seat fell vacant due to a tragic accident and against this backdrop, my advice to the Congress would be to not contest the seat. It is a national party and we can at most appeal to them. Ultimately, it must decide,” Sharad Pawar said. Rohit Pawar met state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal in Mumbai requesting withdrawal, after which another delegation of NCP leaders, including MLA Sana Malik, met him for the same purpose. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis called Sapkal on the phone. “I requested Sapkal to follow the tradition of Maharashtra and withdraw from Baramati the way BJP did after the death of former home minister R R Patil,” he said.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘Glimmer Of Hope’: Mauritius PM Hails India’s Support Amid Iran Crisis, Eyes Key Oil And Gas DealElection Season Kicks Off With Record Voter Turnout In Assam, Puducherry As Kerala Clocks 77% VotingIndia Withdraws Bid To Host COP33 In 2028 — Here’s Why The Government ReconsideredIndia Ramps Up Gulf Outreach: Hardeep Puri Heads To Qatar, Jaishankar to UAE After US-Iran TruceAre You A ‘Worker’ Or Just An Employee? Representative image MUMBAI: In a set of decisions that could reshape campus recruitment across the country’s premier engineering institutions, the All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC) has directed students across all 23 IITs to remove JEE ranks, GATE scores, percentiles and similar entrance examination credentials from their resumes. At the same time, the IITs have decided to take a tougher stance against companies that issue job offers and later withdraw them, potentially restricting future engagement with such recruiters for up to two years if their explanations are found unsatisfactory.Taken together, the measures reflect a growing concern within the IIT system that fairness in recruitment depends not only on how students are evaluated, but also on how they are treated once selected. The decisions were taken unanimously at a recent meeting of the AIPC, the official body of 23 IITs that coordinates and issues common guidelines on internship and placement drives across all IITs. According to AIPC convenor John Jose, the move to remove entrance examination rankings from resumes arose from concerns that recruiters could sometimes infer whether a student belonged to the general or reserved category by comparing a candidate’s rank with the opening and closing ranks of a particular IIT programme.“The distinction is an important one. An entrance examination captures a moment in time. A degree reflects years of work that follow. The objective is that students should be evaluated on their competence, skills and achievements at IIT. What will disappear is the score that opened the gate,” said prof Jose, also a senior faculty of computer science engineering at IIT Guwahati. For generations of IIT students, a rank was more than a number. It was a badge of honour earned through years of preparation, sacrifice and competition. Now, in a move that reflects a changing understanding of merit itself, IITs have decided that those ranks should no longer accompany students into the job market.Under the revised guidelines, students may continue to highlight their Cumulative Performance Index (CPI), projects, internships, research work and other accomplishments earned during their years at IIT, explained Jose. Entrance examination scores may only be shared if a recruiter specifically requests them, but they will no longer be part of the standard resume circulated through placement channels. The committee also addressed a growing concern among placement offices: companies extending job offers to students only to revoke them months later. “Because students who accept an offer are typically removed from the placement process, such reversals can leave them stranded after missing other opportunities,” said prof Jose. To discourage the practice, IITs have begun documenting instances of offer withdrawals and seeking explanations from recruiters.
