NEW DELHI: In the first case of its kind, Supreme Court on Thursday quashed orders passed by NCLT and NCLAT on the ground that they decided a case on the basis of AI-generated non-existent case laws and verdicts, cautioning that unchecked use of AI could distort the justice delivery system.A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe cautioned both the Bar and the Bench on the use of AI, saying the human element should remain in the driving seat and have “absolute and total control over the application and usage of AI”.”For us… the production of fake, non-existent, and hallucinated material and its utilisation as precedents in law, is like the release of methyl isocyanate in the province of law and justice: invisible, insidious, and catastrophic by the time anyone notices,” Justice Narasimha said.The bench said AI was not just an aid but “an alternative to our own thinking, reasoning and even decision making”, making regulation essential. In the insolvency case, NCLT relied on AI-generated material and cited six non-existent SC judgments. The fake judgments also escaped scrutiny by NCLAT. Lawyers told the apex court they had not supplied the fake judgments and that the tribunal had obtained the material through its own research.”It is necessary for courts to adopt a zero-tolerance mode for producing, citing or using AI-generated precedents without verification,” the bench said, adding that any decision relying even partly on fake or hallucinated AI material “is no decision in the eyes of the law” and must be set aside.The court directed the Bar Council of India to constitute a committee to deliberate on the problem of lawyers submitting fake or hallucinated AI-generated material as legal precedents. The yatra will conclude on Aug 28, on Rakshabandhan.After performing a special puja, Sinha flagged off the first batch of more than 4,800 pilgrims travelling in 259 vehicles. “Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is a sacred path where devotion meets spiritual awakening. I wish all devotees a safe, comfortable, blissful, and spiritually fulfilling journey. May this holy pilgrimage bring immense joy and divine peace to all,” LG Sinha said.J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat, LoP Sunil Sharma, BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, local BJP legislators, senior civil and police officials, and representatives of various religious organisations were present at the flag-off ceremony. Dry runs have been conducted to check security and other arrangements for the yatris, who will be escorted by armoured vehicles. Traffic police have imposed highway restrictions from July 2 to Aug 28, with daily advisories and sector-wise cut-off timings.J&K Police have launched “Project Hawk Eye” for aerial surveillance along the Pahalgam route. Security measures include 28 high observation posts (machan morchas), 22 specially trained sniper teams, 416 high-resolution CCTV cameras and Facial Recognition System infrastructure at critical locations. Ladakh SRINAGAR: Over a month after talks between Ladakh groups and a Union home ministry (MHA) sub-committee in Delhi, informal parleys are slated to be held Friday in Leh with central officials.“The meeting will focus on minutes of the last meeting and other issues,” Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) co-chairman Sajjad Kargili said. He made it clear that unlike earlier, it will not be a formal sub-committee or high-powered panel meeting.Additional MHA secretary Lokhande Prashant Sitaram will lead the talks. Leh Apex Body member and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk will not attend the meeting as he is away in Delhi on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in a Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest.The Union Territory had on June 23 observed a complete shutdown against the Centre’s alleged backtracking on understandings reached during a May 22 meeting with MHA officials in the national capital. Ladakh SRINAGAR: Over a month after talks between Ladakh groups and a Union home ministry (MHA) sub-committee in Delhi, informal parleys are slated to be held Friday in Leh with central officials.“The meeting will focus on minutes of the last meeting and other issues,” Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) co-chairman Sajjad Kargili said. He made it clear that unlike earlier, it will not be a formal sub-committee or high-powered panel meeting.Additional MHA secretary Lokhande Prashant Sitaram will lead the talks. Leh Apex Body member and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk will not attend the meeting as he is away in Delhi on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in a Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest.The Union Territory had on June 23 observed a complete shutdown against the Centre’s alleged backtracking on understandings reached during a May 22 meeting with MHA officials in the national capital. Wangchuk had attended that meeting.LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), the region’s two main political groups that had called the bandh, have alleged that draft minutes of the May meeting omitted an agreement on a proposed legislative body with authority over the bureaucracy as well as constitutional safeguards for Ladakh through a provision similar to Article 371.
