Calcutta high court (ANI image) KOLKATA: A survivor of a heinous crime like trafficking cannot be called repeatedly for cross-examination, Calcutta high court ruled while setting aside a trial court order, report Srishti Lakhotia and Dwaipayan Ghosh. The girl, then a minor, left home on Jan 29, 2023, and did not return, as per complaint lodged by her mother. When she was found, the girl informed that she was sold to a hotelier in Bengal for ‘commercial sex purposes’, her lawyer said. Six people were arrested and a chargesheet was filed under IPC and Pocso Act. The trial commenced after charges were framed on Dec 8, 2023. The survivor appeared for trial on Feb 27, 2024 and again on March 15, when she was cross-examined. Five months later, the lawyer representing one of the accused filed a plea on Aug 13, 2024, to recall her for further cross-examination. Pocso court allowed it. But HC invoked its powers under CrPC section 482 to scrap it, with Justice Chaitali Chatterjee Das saying the trial court had “passed the order without assigning any reason”. NEW DELHI: Eight elephants were killed and one injured after a herd was hit by the Sairang New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Assam’s Hojai district in the early hours of Saturday, a forest official said. Five coaches and the engine of the New Delhi bound train were derailed in the incident, though no injuries to passengers were reported, a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson said. The spokesperson said the accident occurred at around 2.17 am. Nagaon divisional forest officer Suhash Kadam told PTI that the collision took place in the Changjurai area of Hojai district. Kadam and other forest officials reached the site soon after the incident. Railway authorities said train services on the affected Jamunamukh Kampur section have been disrupted. Trains scheduled to pass through the stretch are being diverted via the UP line, while restoration work is underway, Kadam added. NEW DELHI: Allowing medical termination of over seven months’ pregnancy of a 15year-old girl, Supreme Court said that a woman cannot be compelled to continue with an unwanted pregnancy against her wish.A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said that forcing a woman, particularly a minor, to carry a pregnancy to full term against her will, would inflict mental, emotional and physical trauma.Rejecting the suggestion that the girl should be allowed to give birth and the new born baby be given in adoption, the bench said the choice of the pregnant woman is more important. “That cannot be a consideration particularly in cases where the child to be born is unwanted. Mahua Moitra along with other TMC leaders protested outside Amit Shah’s residence (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Friday accused the Centre of misusing central agencies after she was detained by Delhi police while protesting outside union home minister Amit Shah’s office against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on political consultancy firm I-PAC in Kolkata.Reacting after her detention, Moitra alleged that the ED was being used to target political opponents and steal sensitive electoral information. “You have seen how the government is using the ED as their agency to steal information, election strategy of their political opponents. ED was sent to the office of our political consultant for dacoity of information. They are talking about some 7–8 years old coal scam; you didn’t get time to gather information in all these years. Mamata Banerjee showed how to fight against them. People of Bengal will teach them a lesson,” she said.Earlier, as she and other TMC MPs including Derek O’ Brien were taken away by police, Moitra posted on X, claiming force was used during the detention. “Amit Shah’s cops dragging us in police vans to police station.
