External affairs minister S Jaishankar will host his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday for bilateral talks, hoping to address some of India’s concerns related to energy and connectivity. While the ministers have spoken on multiple occasions since the conflict in the West Asia region started on February 28, this will be their first in-person meeting since then. Araghchi is expected to land here Wednesday for the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, but his bilateral with Jaishankar is expected to be the main component of his visit as far as India is concerned. TOI had reported on May 10 that the Iranian foreign minister was likely to visit India for the BRICS meeting. Araghchi has been seeking a more pro-active role by the BRICS, especially India as the current Chair, in addressing issues related to the conflict. In the meeting, Jaishankar is expected to raise India’s concerns over disruption in energy supplies, including the stranded LPG tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, and also discuss issues related to the Chabahar port after the expiry of the US sanctions waiver for India’s operations. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Tuesday India remains in touch with both Iran and the US over the issue and that the conflict remains a complicating factor. Jaishankar is also expected to have a bilateral meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday. The government also announced Tuesday that Jaishankar will chair the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting on May 14-15. Amid an exchange of views on global and regional issues, India will look to bridge the gap between member-states over the conflict in the West Asia region, although consensus for a joint statement seems improbable at this stage. The ministers will also call on PM Narendra Modi on Thursday. The level of participation from the UAE, another country which is party to the conflict, is yet to be confirmed. China will be represented by ambassador Xu Feihong as foreign minister Wang Yi is preoccupied with the Trump-Xi summit this week.On the second day of the BRICS meeting, according to the Indian announcement, members and partner countries will participate in a session themed “BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. This will be followed by a session on the “Reforms of Global Governance and Multilateral System”. “The BRICS Foreign Ministers held their last meeting on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) on 26 September 2025. The meeting was chaired by India in its capacity as the incoming BRICS Chair for 2026,” said the MEA in a statement.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosRahul Gandhi Submits Dissent Note On CBI Chief Selection After Key Meet At PM Modi’s Residence‘India Should Not Close Doors For Dialogue With Pakistan’: RSS General Secretary HosabaleVijay Appoints Astrologer As OSD In Tamil Nadu Govt, TVK Allies Call It ‘Unacceptable’Kerala CM Race Heats Up, KC Venugopal Emerges Frontrunner As Rahul Gandhi Holds KeyNEET-UG 2026 Cancelled: NTA Confirms WhatsApp Leak, Announces Refunds & CBI ProbeVijay Meets AIADMK Rebels As EPS Faces Internal Revolt Before Key Assembly VoteIndia Has 60 Days Of Crude Oil LNG; 45 Days Of LPG; Oil Firms Losing ₹1,000 Cr A Day: Hardeep PuriNEET-UG 2026 Cancelled After Leak Verified; NTA Promises Fair Re-Exam For Students | WatchMEA Slams China Over Pakistan Support, Says Shielding Terror Hurts Reputation | WatchSri Lanka Navy Arrests 6 Indian Fishermen, TN CM Vijay Writes To Jaishankar Seeking Their Release123PhotostoriesAlia Bhatt adds a desi twist to Cannes 2026 with a custom dupatta on her breathtaking coral gownWhy you feel constantly drained: 10 signs your soul needs healing9 facts about snow leopards that explain why they are called the ‘ghosts of the mountains’5 Cannes Film Festival 2026 fashion rules celebrities can’t afford to ignoreKim Kardashian and Pete Davidson: Inside the high-profile romance and break-up5 mistakes you’re making if Chikmagalur isn’t in your summer itineraryTraditional Indian home features that deserve a comeback in modern livingFrom lawsuits to public feuds: Controversies that kept Johnny Depp in headlinesLesser-known facts about ‘Taarak Mehta ka Oolta Chasma’ star Dilip Joshi, aka Jethala5 ways to respond with confidence when being disrespected123Hot PicksCBSE class 12 resultRaj SinghBandi Sanjay KumarPune child rape-murder caseLPG stockNEET exam cancelledModi on Gold and WFHTop TrendingTamil Nadu CMBhagwant Mann CousinIPL Points TableFifa World Cup 2026 ScheduleVijay AstrologerHimanta Biswa SarmaIPL Orange Cap 2026AIADMK splitHighway Toll DuesBhuvneshwar Kumar

NEW DELHI: Days before the re-polls, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan from West Bengal’s Falta on Tuesday withdrew his nomination.TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said the party has received information about Khan’s decision, but is yet to get clarity on what prompted it.”We have heard that Jahangir Khan has decided not to contest or participate in the Falta repoll,” he told reporters.”We are still not aware of the reason behind his withdrawal,” he added. This comes after the Election commission scrapped the polls in Falta assembly constituency citing “severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process.”Cases of voter intimidation and alleged tampering with EVMs, including blocking opposition candidates’ names, were reported across booths in Falta. Inadequate CCTV footage also made it impossible to verify the fairness of the polling process. The repolling in Falta seat is scheduled to take place on May 21.Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari took direct aim at Jahangir, who had compared himself to blockbuster film Pushpa’s smuggler-turned-strongman.While addressing a rally in Diamond Harbour, Adhikari said, “Where is that Pushpa — the dacoit? He is not seen anywhere now. The National Human Rights Commission declared 19 persons as notorious criminals in 2021. Jahangir was one of them. Leave him to me. I will take care of him.”Ahead of the rally, police arrested Saidul Khan, a close aide of Jahangir and Trinamool’s Falta vice-president, on multiple charges including death threats. In the 2026 assembly elections, BJP secured 207 seats to end the party’s 15-year rule in the state.
