FIP casts doubt on interim Air India crash report MUMBAI: The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has alleged that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s (AAIB) preliminary report on Air India flight 171 crash appears to have deliberately omitted cockpit warning data that would have pointed to an electrical failure preceding the loss of both engines. The pilots’ association said that simulator tests commissioned independently by them have exposed timing errors that further undermine the report’s findings. FIP said it had written to the govt with a request that AAIB should run simulator tests before releasing the final report on the June 12, 2025, accident. At a presser Friday, FIP president Capt C Randhawa said an electrical failure of the kind the federation has long alleged would have triggered a cascade of caution messages, accompanied by audio alerts, all of which would have been recorded on the cockpit voice recorder. He alleged the preliminary report chose not to reproduce that warning sequence. He questioned why flight data recorder installed in the tail of the aircraft was damaged extensively when the tail was largely found intact. He referred to the fact that this particular recorder is solely powered by electricity and implied that the damage indicated a problem with the aircraft’s electric power supply.Randhawa said FIP commissioned 10 tests on a Boeing 787 simulator after AAIB declined repeated requests to conduct its own replication. The tests found the Ram Air Turbine, the emergency power supply in the aircraft takes 18 seconds to deploy and restore hydraulic pressure after engine shutdown, directly contradicting the preliminary report’s timeline that RAT deployed four seconds after fuel control switches moved to cut off fuel supply to the engines.Capt Randhawa invoked the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ event of 2009, when a US Airways flight landed on the Hudson River shortly after take-off. The US investigating agency had initially blamed Capt Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger for choosing to ditch in the river. But after they ran 30-35 simulator tests, they learned that the aircraft could not have made it back to the runway on time and landed safely. It was only then that Capt Sullenberger, who was alive to defend himself, was cleared. “Here we have captains who have died. No one is there to protect them,” said Capt Randhawa. ED JAMMU: Enforcement Directorate sleuths Thursday launched simultaneous raids in six locations of Jammu and Kashmir, including the house of former minister from Kathua, Jatinder Singh alias Babu Singh, as part of investigations into a narco-terror funding case.Officials said the searches were conducted at four places in Srinagar and two in Jammu under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Police had arrested Singh in April 2022 in connection with the case registered at Gandhi Nagar PS.The case dates back to March 30, 2022, when police detained a suspect, Mohammad Shareef Shah from Kashmir, in Jammu with Rs 6.9 lakh hawala money. During interrogation, Shah had allegedly disclosed that Singh had tasked him with collecting the cash from one Omer in Srinagar. On Sept 9, 2023, State Investigation Agency arrested a drug smuggler, Mohammad Sharief Chechi, a close aide of Singh, from Baramulla. In 2024, SIA arrested two more suspects — Selection Grade Constable Mohammad Saifuddin from Jammu, and former sarpanch Farooq Ahmad Jungal from Uri (Baramulla) — for allegedly being part of a cross-border narcotics syndicate involved in terror funding in Jammu. The arrest of the duo took the number of accused in the case to 17.According to an official SIA statement in 2023, investigation revealed a well-organised drug syndicate run by the accused — some of whom were operating from Dubai — aided by other suspects, including Pakistan-based operatives, who were pushing narcotics into India to generate funds to fuel terrorism in J&K. Heroin smuggled from Pakistan in 2021-22 was sold in India, generating over Rs 2 crore, which was deposited in several Srinagar-based bank accounts, the statement claimed.SIA had earlier filed a chargesheet in this case against 12 accused, including Singh, Muhammad Shareef Shah of Larnoo (Anantnag), and Muhammad Hussain Khateeb of Bhaderwah (Doda), currently based in Pakistan. SIA stated that Singh was in touch with terrorists of the proscribed Hizbul Mujahideen outfit and separatists of the unlawful Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front. The proceeds of the drug sales were allegedly transferred to bank accounts of Indian citizens working in Dubai as “mules” (illegal carriers of money) to obscure the origin of these funds, the statement said.Officials said further investigation was underway.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Unemployability’: Is India Sitting On Ticking Time Bomb Of Unemployment? AI-generated image NEW DELHI: Addiction may not be just about choice or circumstance. A new study by the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) suggests that a stress-linked genetic variation could significantly influence the risk of opioid addiction among Indians, pointing to a biological vulnerability behind dependence.Opioids are strong pain-relief drugs that include heroin, morphine, opium-based substances, codeine, and certain prescription painkillers and cough syrups. Several of these are commonly misused in India and are highly addictive. The concern is particularly acute as India has a high burden of opioid use, driven largely by heroin. As per the 2019 report Magnitude of Substance Use in India by the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment, opioid use rates in India are three times the global average.Participants were assessed for substance-use behaviour and tested for genetic variations linked to the brain’s stress-response system, focusing on the galanin pathway, which influences mood, anxiety and reward behaviour. The study, authored by Dr Atul Ambekar and Dr Ramandeep from the Department of Psychiatry, AIIMS New Delhi, along with Rizwana Quraishi and Ram Kumar from the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, AIIMS New Delhi, analysed 170 men—85 diagnosed with opioid dependence and 85 healthy controls.Researchers found that a specific genetic variant, GALR1 rs9807208, was significantly more common among opioid-dependent patients. Those with addiction had more than twice the prevalence of this gene variant compared to individuals without dependence, suggesting an inherited susceptibility to addiction.GALR1 is a receptor in the brain that responds to galanin, a chemical messenger activated during stress. It plays a role in emotional regulation and how the brain processes reward—mechanisms closely associated with addiction. Variations in this system may heighten sensitivity to stress and drug exposure.Doctors say opioid dependence often develops alongside chronic stress, anxiety and mood disorders, and stress is a known trigger for both initiation of drug use and relapse after recovery. The study found no association between the gene variant and the severity or pattern of drug use, indicating that genetics may influence vulnerability rather than disease progression.Commenting on the findings, Dr. Mantosh Kumar, senior consultant at Adayu, a Fortis Network Hospital, said heroin remains the most habit-forming opioid, while prescription painkillers and cough syrups, though regulated, still carry abuse potential. “Addiction develops through a complex interaction of biological vulnerability, psychological factors and social stressors, not genetics alone,” he said.Conducted between February and September 2023, the exploratory study involved only male participants, and researchers cautioned that larger and more diverse studies are needed. Experts say the findings reinforce the view of addiction as a medical condition shaped by both biology and environment, rather than a moral failing.About the AuthorAnuja JaiswalAnuja Jaiswal is a Senior Assistant Editor at The Times of India, with an impressive 18-year career in narrative journalism. ‘He is a mouse’: TMC’s Kunal Ghosh slams ‘Singham’ cop Ajay Pal Sharma over repolling in Falta, demands suspension NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh on Sunday launched a scathing attack on IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, popularly dubbed ‘Singham’, demanding his suspension over alleged massive rigging in West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency.”If there was huge rigging in Falta, what were they doing on election day? What was ‘Singham’ officer doing if there was mass rigging during polling? If the entire constituency was rigged in Singham’s area, then he is not a Singham, he is a mouse. He should be suspended first. There must be accountability. What was the military doing when the entire constituency got rigged?” Ghosh asked. The attack came after the Election Commission ordered a complete repoll in all 285 polling stations of Falta constituency on May 21, citing “severe electoral offences and subversion of democratic process” during the April 29 polling. Why EC ordered repoll The Election Commission’s detailed order revealed that the initial scrutiny conducted on April 30 was deeply flawed. The scrutiny relied primarily on paperwork and formal reports, while complaints filed by candidates and agents were not examined in detail. Crucially, video footage from polling stations was not thoroughly reviewed. The BJP had earlier claimed that its party symbol on electronic voting machines (EVMs) was allegedly taped over at several booths in Falta, preventing voters from selecting its option. Party leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, flagged the issue with senior leadership.’Singham’ officerSharma, a 2011-batch Uttar Pradesh-cadre IPS officer, was deployed as an observer by the Election Commission for the second phase of polling in West Bengal. Known for his tough policing image, he had earlier triggered controversy after a purported viral video showed him warning alleged “troublemakers” of “appropriate treatment” if they attempted to disrupt polling in Falta. The fresh polling will be conducted on May 21, with counting scheduled for May 24.Follow the latest election results 2026, live updates, winner lists, constituency-wise results, party-wise trends and full coverage for Tamil Nadu election results, West Bengal election results, Kerala election results, Assam election results and Puducherry election results on Times of India.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
