. NEW DELHI: In what could further strain the already tense Congress-CPM equation, ED has intensified its probe into the money laundering allegations against the daughter of former Marxist CM of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan.Boosted by a Kerala high court order that money laundering investigations against Vijayan’s daughter Veena are not dependent upon registration of a criminal case against her, ED has switched into higher gear in the politically sensitive case. While sources in the agency denied that the visit of ED chief Rahul Navin was motivated by the opening created by HC for the probe, which was stalled because of the indifference of the Vijayan government, they said that the investigation will gather momentum as a logical corollary of the HC order. This will widen the rift between Congress and CPM, which has taken exception to Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of ED’s charges against Vijayan and his allegation that the agency did not arrest Vijayan because of a secret Marxist-BJP deal. CPM general secretary M A Baby wrote a letter to Congress chief Kharge to protest, and its resentment can only grow as the probe moves closer to Vijayan’s doorstep. The enforcement agency on May 27 searched the former CM’s house, where Veena was also present. The latter is accused of receiving Rs 1.7 crore from Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL). The payment was allegedly in exchange for the services she offered as the owner of a computer solutions company.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosInternet Cut, Drones Deployed As Jaipur Widens Key Road Amid Encroachment Row | WatchTMC Rift Deepens As Mahua Targets Yusuf Pathan After MPs Back NDA Alignment | WatchINDIA Bloc Meet: Alliance Partners Challenge Congress’ Leadership & ‘Cross Comments’ During PollsKakoli Ghosh Hits Out At TMC Over Bengal’s Decline, Claims 20 MPs Support Separate TMC FactionPraggnanandhaa Surprised By CM Vijay’s Chess Skills During Felicitation Ceremony | WatchDelhi Hotel Fire Tragedy: Jai Mishra Surrenders In Court, Lovekesh Bajaj Gets 2-Day Police Remand20 TMC MPs Write To Speaker, Express Desire To Support BJP-Led NDA | WatchKunal Ghosh Questions Reports Of 20 TMC MPs Backing NDA, Says Voters Won’t ApproveSambit Patra Compares Akhilesh’s Future To Mamata’s, Mocks INDIA BlocGovt Launches 2 Major Schemes To Boost Road Accident Rescue Efforts123PhotostoriesThere are only 4 American states that begin with the letter ‘W’, and they hide some of the world’s most iconic wondersExclusive – Avinash Mishra opens up on Khatron Ke Khiladi 15, his training and Eisha Singh’s support; says ‘She has confidence in me; it’s been very encouraging and heartening’People will instantly take you more seriously when you start doing these 10 things10 subtle signs someone may be jealous of you, as per psychologyWant your kids to spend less time on screens? Image: IANS Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged voters to turn out in record numbers as Phase-2 polling of the West Bengal assembly elections 2026 got underway. In a post through X, he made a special appeal to women and young voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers, highlighting their crucial role in strengthening the electoral process.”Today is Phase-2 of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026. Urging all those voting today to do so in record numbers and make our democracy more vibrant as well as participative. It is important that the women and youth of West Bengal, in particular, turnout in large numbers and exercise their franchise,” PM Modi said in a post on X.Voting began on Wednesday across 142 constituencies in the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, with extensive security arrangements in place and a high-stakes contest unfolding between the ruling TMC and the BJP. The outcome of this phase is expected to be crucial in determining whether the TMC retains its dominance in the southern districts or if the BJP can make significant inroads into the state’s power structure.Polling commenced at 7.00 am, with voters queuing up outside booths in Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly and Purba Bardhaman, regions that form the political and electoral core of the state.Unlike the first phase, where the BJP focused on defending its gains in north Bengal, the final round shifts the contest squarely to the TMC’s stronghold. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the ruling party had secured 123 of these 142 seats, while the BJP managed 18 and the ISF one.At the centre of the contest is Bhabanipur, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s political bastion, where she is locked in a high-profile battle against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. The contest is being seen as a symbolic rematch of Nandigram, where Adhikari had defeated Banerjee in the 2021 elections.A total of 3.21 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this phase, including 1.57 crore women and 792 third-gender electors. Voting is taking place across 41,001 polling stations, all of which are under webcasting surveillance to ensure transparency. The Election Commission of India has deployed 2,321 companies of central forces across seven districts, with Kolkata receiving the highest deployment of 273 companies.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
