Prosecutors argued before the court that Choksi poses a flight risk and should not be released from custody, the officials told PTI. Choksi, who relocated to Belgium in 2023 after leaving Antigua and Barbuda, was arrested there in April following India’s extradition request. He and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused of defrauding the bank of over Rs 13,000 crore.India had earlier assured Belgian authorities that if extradited, Choksi will be housed in Barrack No. 12 at Arthur Road jail, Mumbai, with adequate space and no risk of overcrowding or solitary confinement. Nirav Modi, a declared fugitive economic offender, is currently jailed in London and contesting extradition. The CBI’s extradition request cites the UN conventions against corruption and organised crime, supported by arrest warrants from Mumbai courts. The fraud involved PNB issuing 165 LoUs and 58 Foreign Letters of Credit in 2017 without limits or proper records, leading to massive losses covered by the bank.Authorities allege that loans were obtained from overseas banks across locations including Mauritius, Hong Kong, Antwerp, and Frankfurt based on these fraudulent guarantees. When the companies failed to repay, PNB was forced to pay over Rs 6,300 crore, including interest, to these foreign banks.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: For many elderly people, a typical day begins with a handful of pills – for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and heart disease. But a new global review suggests that in very frail older adults, continuing all long-term medicines may not always be necessary – and in many cases, carefully stopping some of them may be safe. The findings, published in the journal ‘BMC Geriatrics’, come from an analysis of patients with advanced frailty, dementia or limited life expectancy – a group often prescribed multiple medicines despite unclear long-term benefit. Researchers found that reducing or discontinuing such drugs did not lead to a rise in deaths or major complications in most cases. Many of these medicines are meant to prevent problems years later. Israel Iran WarMiddle East conflict: One Indian dead, another injured by missile debris in Abu Dhabi‘Man who ran Strait of Hormuz’: Iran navy commander Alireza Tangsiri killed in Israeli strikeBab al-Mandeb: How the ‘Gate of Tears’ may emerge as Iran’s second choke point after HormuzBut for frail or seriously ill patients, those benefits may never be realised. Instead, taking multiple drugs can increase the risk of dizziness, weakness, confusion and falls, often leading to hospitalisation.Doctors say this pattern of “polypharmacy”, where patients take several medicines at once, is increasingly common among the elderly in India. “They often see multiple specialists and prescriptions are not always reviewed together. In frail older adults, over-treatment can do more harm than good – for instance, aspirin for primary prevention should be avoided, excessive blood pressure control can lead to falls, and drugs like diuretics, insulin or sulfonylureas can cause electrolyte imbalance or hypoglycaemia. The focus sho-uld be on reducing medicines where the risks outweigh the benefits,” said Dr Pulin Gupta, professor in the department of medicine at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.”In frail elderly patients, stopping some preventive medicines is generally safe if done carefully, though those with prior heart attack or stroke need caution,” said Dr Rommel Tickoo, director of internal medicine at Max Hospital, Saket. He added that commonly overused drugs include statins for primary prevention, tightly controlled diabetes medicines like insulin or sulfonylureas, multiple blood pressure drugs, sleeping pills, long-term acid suppressants and anticholinergics.”Deprescribing should be structured – based on goals of care, frailty and life expectancy – with careful tapering and monitoring,” he said, noting that reducing medicines often leads to fewer falls, better cognition and improved energy levels.Families often assume more medicines mean better care, but the opposite can be true. Each added drug raises the risk of interactions. The review reflects a shift from aggressive prevention to pati-ent-centred care, where treatment aligns with health and priorities. Experts caution that medicines should not be stopped casually; reduction must be supervised, with each drug reviewed for need.About the AuthorAnuja JaiswalAnuja Jaiswal is a Senior Assistant Editor at The Times of India, with an impressive 18-year career in narrative journalism. Akhilesh Yadav NEW DELHI: A triumphant opposition hailed the fall of the constitutional amendment bill as a defeat for delimitation and not women’s reservation. After the opposition prevailed in voting, Congress’ Rahul Gandhi spoke with TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee and thanked him for the support. There was concern that only a few of the 28 TMC MPs may turn up in Parliament because of poll campaign in Bengal. But TMC sent 21 MPs after repeated requests from INDIA bloc members who impressed upon Mamata Banerjee that presence in debate and voting was important to thwart the Modi govt’s plan. Sources said Banerjee told Rahul, “The tide is turning against BJP”.SP’s Akhilesh Yadav called it a “defeat of BJP’s malice”. RSP’s N K Premachandran said the bill’s failure to pass shows that BJP must consult with opposition on important issues concerning the nation. “This defeat is not of women’s quota but of delimitation by the backdoor,” he said.Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused PM Modi of maliciously linking women’s quota to delimitation based on the 2011 census. “But his hollow attempt to pose as the messiah of women has failed today,” she said. She added that if the three bills had passed in Parliament, democracy in India would not have survived.CPI MP Sandosh Kumar said the fall of govt legislation shows there is a strong opposition to any attempt to change the balance of representation. He said the women of the country must see through the BJP’s approach of delaying women’s quota by linking it to the census and delimitation.DMK chief M K Stalin, who led the protests in Tamil Nadu, said his party’s concern was about delimitation, “which requires careful thought to ensure it is fair, especially for southern states”. On 28th June, 24 Opposition Parties along with an Independent MP wrote to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India on the flawed SIR process, the partisan role of the Election Commission of India and other election-related issues,” Venugopal said in a post on X.Venugopal said the judiciary has a constitutional responsibility to safeguard democracy and act as a check on the executive. He said the Supreme Court has a key role in ensuring that elections remain free and fair, and are perceived to be so by the public.
