. KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court, hearing a plea filed by the parents of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to form a three-member special investigation team (SIT) within 48 hours to probe alleged “lapses” by the state police and hospital authorities during the initial investigation and the alleged destruction of evidence. The SIT, headed by the CBI’s joint director (eastern zone), has been asked to submit a detailed report to the court by June 25.”The ongoing investigation should focus on the lapses identified by CBI in the report dated March 28, 2025. CBI has indicated such lapses on the part of the police and the hospital authorities during the investigation, prior to the investigation being handed over to CBI,” the court observed. The special bench of Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh also said the central agency could re-examine the victim’s parents and other witnesses. The court is hearing a petition filed by the parents of the young doctor, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Aug 9, 2024. The plea, pending for nearly a year and seven months, alleges that Sanjay Roy – the only person arrested in the case – may not have acted alone. The parents have also claimed that the seminar hall where the body was found was not the actual crime scene. They further accused CBI investigating officer Seema Pahuja of overlooking crucial evidence. After directing the formation of the SIT, however, the bench clarified that it was not commenting on the “credibility” of the probe conducted by Pahuja, who was present in court.”Let us trust the system. They will do it… We are not aggrieved by what she has done,” the bench observed.During the hearing, the parents’ counsel, Jayanta Narayan Chatterjee, alleged attempts to “hush up” the crime, saying: “Why was she murdered? She knew of several rackets, that is why she was murdered.” He also claimed investigators failed to probe the role of the delivery worker who brought dinner for the victim hours before the crime.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosCalcutta High Court Junks Pleas On West Bengal Cattle Slaughter Rules Ahead Of Bakr Eid‘Menon’ Surname Row: VD Satheesan Faces Heat From Kerala Congress Leaders Over Oath Name ChoiceIUML And VCK To Also Join Vijay Cabinet In Tamil Nadu, Expansion Tomorrow: ReportTMC Protests Against BJP Government Over Alleged Forced Eviction Of Hawkers In BengalTamil Nadu Cabinet Expansion: Congress MLAs Get Portfolios, Governor Stops Oath Praise Of LeadersNibe Successfully Tests Vayu Astra-1 Loitering Munition In Maiden TrialsCJP X Account Withheld In India After Crossing 200K Followers In Just Four Days | WatchFIR Sought Against Rahul Gandhi Over ‘Traitors’ Remark On PM Modi, Amit ShahAir India Flight AI2651 Hits Tail During Landing, Aircraft Grounded For Inspection At BengaluruViral Cockroach Janta Party Overtakes Congress And BJP In Instagram Followers Race | Watch123Photostories10 traditional Indian foods that PM Modi gifted world leaders during his 5-nation tourFrom chubby little Gangubai to a fit and fab young actress after losing 22 Kgs; Saloni Daini’s stunning transformation is inspiringDeepika Padukone’s Cannes looks through the yearsPlants that thrive during Indian monsoon without rotting5 desi Indian teas among the Top 50 Teas in the WorldVanessa Trump diagnosed with breast cancer: Inside her life after divorce with Donald Trump Jr.5 White foods you must avoid for good health5 real estate hotspots near newly-opened Navi Mumbai Airport seeing massive growthOptical illusion personality test: Fish, face or stars? Calcutta HC Kolkata: Calcutta HC Friday quashed the Election Commission’s move to requisition assistant professors of state colleges for the duty of presiding officers at polling stations in Bengal, pulling up the poll panel for not placing any material to show why their deployment was unavoidable. The order, however, will not apply to assistant professors who have already attained training and showed willingness to join. Justice Krishna Rao said despite being given repeated opportunities, the EC failed to produce any document to show the unavoidable circumstances on the basis of which it had taken the decision of appointing assistant professors as presiding officers. The EC counsel told the court there are 90,000 booths, and 1,80,000 to 1,90,000 presiding officers are needed to be kept ready. Assignment of duty was given on March 19, and the writ was filed on April 8, the counsel said. The petitioners’ counsel, senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, argued that ECI’s circular dated Feb 16, 2010, categorically mentioned that Group A equivalent senior officers, including teaching staff of universities and colleges, should not be drafted for ‘polling duties’ without specific reasons to be recorded in writing by the DEO where such appointment becomes unavoidable.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosModi Govt’s Women Quota Bill Crashes In Lok Sabha, Fails 2/3 Majority TestSad Day For Women’: Priyanka Chaturvedi Breaks With INDIA Bloc In Lok Sabha RowNo Nari Shakti! Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar (Left) PUDUCHERRY: Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the purity of the electoral roll is the bedrock of democracy and affirmed that no eligible voter has been excluded and no ineligible person has been included on the final voters’ list after the special intensive revision (SIR) process.Kumar was here on Wednesday, leading a seven-member team to meet with Puducherry officials to review preparedness for the 2026 assembly polls in the Union territory. Outlining new initiatives to be introduced in the upcoming elections while briefing reporters, Kumar said the commission had decided to set up mobile deposit counters at all polling booths and to print colour photographs of the candidates on the ballot units, following requests from people, as they could not identify candidates with black-and-white photos.Kumar said polling in Puducherry has been peaceful, fair and transparent with high voter turnout (above 85%) in the past and added that Puducherry has emerged as a model for the rest of the country in the conduct of elections. He said all polling stations (1,099) in Puducherry would be equipped with webcasting facilities. To a query on the distribution of freebies even before the political parties have finalised the alliance and announced their candidates, Kumar said the commission would curb the malpractice once the model code of conduct comes into force. “We have issued strict directions to enforcement agencies to prevent such malpractices and to ensure a free, fair and transparent electoral process,” he said.Earlier, Kumar, along with election commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, interacted with representatives of recognised national and state political parties and elicited their views and opinions in smooth conduct of polls. Justice Sachin Datta, in an order earlier this week, refused to stay the release of the web series, saying the court would hear the parties before taking a decision. Dubey’s wife has stated in her petition that no consent was ever sought or obtained for portraying identifiable characters, connected with her and her family. The plea says the series sensationalises and fictionalises deeply private aspects of her life, including incidents within the marital home and events following her husband’s death, resulting in a grave invasion of her privacy, dignity and reputation, which are protected under Article 21 of the Constitution.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosBangladesh Unrest: Another Hindu Man Lynched; Police Claim Extortion Bid‘Hurt Hindu Sentiments’: Bajrang Dal Protests Outside Bareilly Church, Video Viral‘Bit Late but Strong’: Amit Shah Highlights India’s Semiconductor Industry Growth‘One Family Rule’: PM Modi Slams Congress at Prerna Sthal InaugurationBNP Chairman Tarique Rahman Makes Grand Comeback To Bangladesh, Evokes Martin Luther King In SpeechMajor anti-Naxal success: Rs 1.2-crore bounty Maoist Ganesh Uike among four gunned down in Odisha’Every Indian Is Assaulted When…’: Shashi Tharoor Slams Attacks On Christmas Celebrations In IndiaNitin Gadkari Reveals Shocking Experience of Meeting Hamas Leader Before His Assassination in Iran’You’ll Know Me Now’: Gunman’s Chilling Threat Before Killing AMU Teacher Inside Campus In UPWhy Tarique Rahman’s Return To Dhaka After 17 Years Could Reshape Bangladesh Politics After Hasina123PhotostoriesAvoid making these 5 worst sleep mistakesWhat happens when you practice ‘sideways walking’How to take calcium and magnesium supplements for maximum absorption and why taking them together may not be idealExclusive – From facing blame for breaking the team to claiming Shubhangi Atre copied her Angoori; Shilpa Shinde on Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hai, comeback, and comparisonsNew parents of 2025: Chris Evans-Alba Baptista to Millie Bobby Brown-Jake BongioviPost-festive detox: Simple ways to detox your body with turmericWhy South India is the ultimate January escape: 10 places to prove it!Year ender 2025: From Akshaye Khanna, Adarsh Gourav to Sanya Malhotra, actors who redefined their craft beyond the blockbustersFrom fitness to confidence: Why kids should be encouraged to pick up sportsYour Soul’s Biggest Fear Based On Your Birth Date123Hot PicksUAE WeatherPAN-Aadhaar linkingKarbi Anglong CurfewGold rate todayIncome Tax RefundPublic Holidays DecemberBank Holidays DecemberTop TrendingTaylor SwiftPaul RuddPatrick MahomesMegan Thee Stallion Net Worth 2025Travis KelceJoel EmbiidSavannah James Net WorthSophie CunninghamDrew McIntyre and Kaitlyn Frohnapfel Net WorthKhamzat Chimaev
