NEW DELHI: O Panneerselvam made a striking political statement on Friday by replacing a photograph of his late mentor J Jayalalithaa with one of Chief Minister M K Stalin in his car, moments before formally joining the DMK in Chennai. The carefully timed gesture, carried out as he arrived at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters, underscored a dramatic shift in allegiance for the three-time former Chief Minister who once symbolised unwavering loyalty to the AIADMK supremo. The image of Jayalalithaa had long occupied pride of place on his vehicle’s dashboard; its removal signalled a decisive break from his political past.Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Friday joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Chennai, formally switching sides ahead of the forthcoming 2026 Assembly elections. Inducted in the presence of Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin at the party headquarters, Panneerselvam said he would work for the party as a cadre, marking a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.”I have joined the DMK. I will work and support the DMK as a cadre,” Panneerselvam told reporters shortly after his induction. His son, P Ravindhranath Kumar, also joined the party.Welcoming him into the fold, Stalin described Panneerselvam as a “dear brother” and praised his humility and virtues.”Former Chief Minister and dear brother Thiru. O. Panneerselvam has joined the mother organisation, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. I welcome him with open arms. He, who bears the name of the great leader of the Dravidian movement, has joined our great movement to safeguard the Dravidian movement’s ideology,” he posted on X.Framing the development in the context of the next Assembly election, Stalin added:”The 2026 Assembly election is a democratic battle between Tamil Nadu and the fascist BJP. It is with this realisation that various democratic forces are joining the DMK alliance. Our brother who has joined us, Thiru. O. Panneerselvam is a loving person, a virtuous person, a humble person! May his arrival be for the welfare! May Tamil Nadu triumph!”Explaining his decision, Panneerselvam said he had chosen to join the DMK to draw a line under his troubled past in the AIADMK.”The decision I’ve taken is my own, to put a fullstop to the bitter experience for me. I thank CM and DMK President Stalin for accepting me to join DMK. I have joined DMK with full joy. EPS is behaving as a dictator, and he has created a situation where AIADMK cannot get victory,” Panneerselvam told media persons.Panneerselvam was expelled from the AIADMK in 2022 following a protracted leadership tussle with Edappadi K Palaniswami, a rupture that reshaped the party’s internal power structure and ultimately paved the way for his latest political move.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. . KOLKATA: A day after high drama and tense standoff as CM Mamata Banerjee walked into its office challenging the ongoing ED raid, the 450-odd employees of I-PAC office in Kolkata returned to work on Friday, in 100% attendance. There were some “visible changes”, though, right outside its office on the 11th floor at Godrej Waterside in Sector V, the most crucial one being the added police post on the 11th floor. ID cards were being checked off and on. I-PAC director Pratik Jain was reportedly not in office even though a major meeting took place on Friday evening. The idea of getting the employees back to work was floated by the CM herself on Thursday, just before leaving I-PAC office, it’s learnt. Mamata inquired with director Jain if the staff would resume working. She was told by the management they were asked to work from home. It was then decided that the staff would be asked to report back to the office from Friday to “restore normal work” as quickly as possible. “There was an apprehension that ED would seal our office premises. We were relieved it did not happen. Most of us worked normally on Friday and even sent out press releases as on any other day,” said one of them. I-PAC Thursday released a statement, detailing its portfolio with multiple parties cutting across multiple ideologies and claimed ED searches “raises serious concerns and sets an unsettling precedent”. “Regardless, we have extended full cooperation and will continue to do so as required engaging with the process in complete accordance and respect for the law,” it said. “Over the years, I-PAC has worked in a professional advisory capacity with multiple parties across ideologies and regions, including BJP, Congress, AAP, TMC, DMK, YSR Congress Party, BRS, JDU, Shiv Sena among others. We do not contest elections or hold political office. Our role is limited to transparent and professional political consulting, uninfluenced by differences in political ideology,” it said. The statement called “Thursday a difficult and unfortunate day” for I-PAC. “Despite what transpired yesterday, we remain fully committed to doing our work unfazed and unperturbed with consistency and accountability and guided by the same purpose that has shaped us from the start,” it concluded.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosCEPA A Win-Win For India And Chile, Key Focus On Market Access And Minerals: Chile EnvoyMamata Banerjee Hits Streets, Leads Kolkata Rally Against ED RaidsAfter Meeting PM Modi, AI Innovators Share Insights That Could Change The GameAmit Shah Outlines Foolproof NIDMS Mechanism To Counter Future Terror AttacksIndia No Longer Imports Arms, UP Leads Defence Manufacturing: Rajnath Singh’Not Accurate’: India Hits Back After Trump Aide Blames PM Modi For Delayed Trade DealMEA Calls For Firm Action As India Flags Disturbing Pattern Of Attacks On Minorities In BangladeshPM Modi To Host German Chancellor Merz In Gujarat As India-Germany Ties Enter Strategic Phase’PM Modi-Trump Held 8 Calls In 2025′: India Rejects Lutnick’s Claim On Stalled Trade AgreementThe Day CBI Arrested Indira Gandhi And Sonia’s Pasta Maker That May Have Saved The Day For Cong123PhotostoriesBirthday special: Hrithik Roshan’s social media moments with Saba Azad and familyBirthday Special: Hrithik Roshan’s movies to watch on OTTTaarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah: From calling Dilip Joshi the ‘pillar of the show’ to reacting to Disha Vakani aka Dayaben’s return, Sharad Sankla aka Abdul gets candid7 moon-kissed baby names for your little princessCurry-smelling kangaroos to banana bees: 6 animals that surprisingly smell like foodWhat teachers wish parents understood‘Hum Paanch’, ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’, ‘Yes Boss’: Top TV comedy shows from the 90What students learn in school beyond the syllabusFrom ‘Highway’ to ‘Chhichhore’: 5 times mainstream films embraced unconventional charactersSadhguru’s Drumstick Soup is a winter must-have; recipe inside123Hot PicksTrump Mexico NewsTrump Denmark NewsGold rate todayBengaluru newsCigarette price hikePublic holidays January 2026Bank Holidays JanuaryTop TrendingCandace OwensTommy Fleetwood and Clare Fleetwood Net WorthTravis KelceVanessa BryantLos Angeles KingsBoston Celtics vs Toronto RaptorsLeBron JamesJa MorantWPL Live ScoreStefon Diggs

(File photo) NEW DELHI: Noida International Airport (NIA) will now begin operations next Monday with one fewer launch airline as Air India Express has indefinitely postponed its plans to have flights from there. The new airport will come to life with IndiGo flights, followed by Akasa from the next day. IndiGo will be the biggest operator at NIA for the foreseeable future as Tata-backed AI Group’s mounting losses have led its budget airline — originally one of NIA’s three launch airlines — staying away for now. Which means, NIA will be buzzing with a little less than originally expected life in the first few months. In fact, AI Express has pulled out of Ghaziabad’s Hindon Airport also and now operates only to and from Delhi’s IGIA in the NCR. “AI Group is cutting costs and may not be keen to spend setting up facilities at an airport in an area where it is already present (Delhi IGIA). The flights that have been cut by AI Express due to market demand and network rationalisation include those from Delhi too. The current services can be served from IGIA,” said sources. While NIA like all new airports including Goa Mopa and Navi Mumbai will see a gradual ramp up in flights as primarily IndiGo builds up routes and frequencies with Akasa also doing so on a smaller scale, Hindon has seen a drastic reduction in flights this summer despite being located in the heart of a densely populated area. This has happened due to airlines reducing flights due to the West Asia war’s devastating impact on operating costs and the defence airport’s own limitations.Hindon last winter saw a peak of about 25 daily aircraft movement, meaning 25 arrivals and as many departures. That number kept falling and is now at just eight with IndiGo having five arrivals and as many departures and Star Air at three. The number fell after IndiGo reduced its operations and AI Express pulled out its 10 daily flights. While the flight reduction is part of the overall cuts we are seeing globally, Hindon poses serious operational challenges for airlines with just two parking bays for commercial aircraft and limited sunrise to sunset operational hours. If one aircraft gets delayed on the ground for some reason like a suspected technical snag, then the other aircraft which was to land and take this slot has to be diverted to Delhi IGIA.Everyone is hoping for better times to return for aviation that will see more people flying again and preparations are on accordingly. Hindon is adding parking bays apart from preparing to expand its passenger terminal. NIA is opening next Monday. “We are waiting to take off once the current challenges subside. The runway is there. The intent is there,” said a senior airline official.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosKashmiri Diaspora Stages Massive UK Protests Against Alleged Military Crackdown In PoJKIndia Tears Into Pakistan At UN, Calls Airstrikes On Afghanistan ‘Massacre’ And ‘Hypocrisy’Supreme Court Pulls Up CBSE Over Delay In Class 12 Improvement Results, Seeks Solution By FridayInternet Cut, Drones Deployed As Jaipur Widens Key Road Amid Encroachment Row | WatchTMC Rift Deepens As Mahua Targets Yusuf Pathan After MPs Back NDA Alignment | WatchINDIA Bloc Meet: Alliance Partners Challenge Congress’ Leadership & ‘Cross Comments’ During PollsKakoli Ghosh Hits Out At TMC Over Bengal’s Decline, Claims 20 MPs Support Separate TMC FactionPraggnanandhaa Surprised By CM Vijay’s Chess Skills During Felicitation Ceremony | WatchDelhi Hotel Fire Tragedy: Jai Mishra Surrenders In Court, Lovekesh Bajaj Gets 2-Day Police Remand20 TMC MPs Write To Speaker, Express Desire To Support BJP-Led NDA | Watch123Photostories10 baby names with the letter X that sound modern and coolThere are only 4 American states that begin with the letter ‘W’, and they hide some of the world’s most iconic wondersExclusive – Avinash Mishra opens up on Khatron Ke Khiladi 15, his training and Eisha Singh’s support; says ‘She has confidence in me; it’s been very encouraging and heartening’People will instantly take you more seriously when you start doing these 10 things10 subtle signs someone may be jealous of you, as per psychologyWant your kids to spend less time on screens?
