NEW DELHI: Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has slapped a Rs 5 lakh penalty on edtech company, PhysicsWallah (PW), over use of “dark patterns” on its website and mobile application. raising concerns about unfair trade practices and consumer rights violations.In its order passed on Monday, the CCPA said that the Noida-based edtech firm used manipulative interface designs during the purchase process. It mentioned that a Rs 10 contribution towards the “PW Foundation” was automatically pre-selected during checkout, resulting in additional charges being added to users’ final payment without explicit consent. This amounts to ‘basket sneaking’, which has been categorised as a dark pattern.The authority also said that users clicking on the “Know More” option regarding the donation were shown emotionally persuasive messages related to supporting marriages, children’s education, and healthcare for underserved communities. According to the CCPA, which “can induce guilt and nudge users to retain the pre-selected donation amount”.CCPA took up this case as suo motu into PhysicsWallah’s alleged “dark patterns” on its website and app.The order said that PhysicsWalla admitted to the authority that the pre-selected donation mechanism remained operational from Feb 14, 2024 to Dec 24, 2025 and approximately Rs 2.5 crore was collected from around 21.37 lakh users during this period. “The platform caters extensively to students preparing for competitive examinations, many of whom are minors or young consumers. In such circumstances, deployment of manipulative interface practices affecting consumer autonomy and informed choice warrants regulatory intervention and imposition of penalty to ensure deterrence and future compliance,” CCPA said.The authority also raised concern over the company’s handling of “free courses.” The regulator found that users opting for this were required to share personal details such as mobile numbers and email IDs to access courses advertised as free. NEW DELHI: Existing seasonal rainfall deficit of 40% will be reduced in July, backed by good rains in the first 7-10 days due to further advance of monsoon in many parts, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and some parts of Rajasthan during the next 2-3 days, but overall the rainfall is likely to be ‘below normal’ in most parts of the country during the month, IMD said in its latest forecast on Tuesday.The month is also likely to be warmer than usual as the Met department predicted “above normal” temperatures in many parts of the country.Besides the progress of the monsoon in the remaining parts of the country, the good rains during the first 10 days of the month from Odisha and West Bengal to Gujarat and Maharashtra, covering most parts of central India, can be attributed to the formation of the low-pressure system (LPS) over the Bay of Bengal.“Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into remaining parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, some more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, entire Daman & Diu, Jammu & Kashmir, most parts of Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and Punjab, and some parts of Rajasthan during the next 2-3 days,” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, IMD.He underlined that the good rains in the next 7-10 days in July, which normally happen to be the rainiest month of the monsoon season (June-Sept), may help sowing operations, specifically in the ‘monsoon core zone’ – the rain-fed area of the country where farming largely depends on the seasonal rainfall.Noting that the “rainfall over all India (99.5 mm) was fifth lowest June rainfall since 1901”, Mohapatra said, “There was negative impact on rainfall activity over Indian region due to development of El Nino, while the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which is in neutral phase, could not help to compensate the negative impact of El Nino.” He also flagged that there were no low-pressure systems formed during June.El Nino Southern oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are two key factors that govern variation in monsoon rainfall. El Niño – a natural climate pattern in which the surface waters of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean become warmer than usual – is associated with weak monsoon and harsher summer in India. The IOD – difference in sea surface temperatures between the western and eastern parts of the tropical Indian Ocean – helps formation of stronger monsoon winds. The positive IOD invariably soften the impact of strong El Nino.The year 2009 received the lowest June rainfall (87.6 mm) since 1901, followed by 1905 (91.9 mm), 2014 (92.8 mm), 1926 (96.7 mm) and 2026 (99.5 mm). This year, India received the lowest June rainfall after 2014, which was the drought year.Though IOD, which softens the impact of El Nino if turned positive, continues to be in neutral condition as per the IMD’s model, some global models hint at the possibility of it turning positive by the end of Aug and Sept. If that happens, the second half of the monsoon season may get slightly better rainfall. But it may not offset the deficit of June-July.“Currently, neutral IOD conditions are being observed over the Indian Ocean. It’s all OK?” to which the response comes, “All OK, all OK. Negative, no fire.”An earlier post by the union noted that the vessel was not responding.Oman-bound Liaki Freedom is an oil and chemical tanker sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands.Since June 8, three vessels with Indian crew have been targeted by the US military, resulting in the deaths of three Indian sailors in the second incident on June 10. Representational image NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Saturday dismissed reports claiming another Indian-crewed tanker has been attacked near the Strait of Hormuz.Click here for live updates on US-Iran warThe ministry said it had spoken with the ship’s master, who confirmed that all crew members were safe.”We have spoken with the Master of the vessel Liaki Freedom, who has confirmed that all crew members are safe and that the reported information is false,” ANI quoted an MEA spokesperson as saying.The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI), a global seafarers’ organisation, also confirmed that no attack has taken place on the ship.In a clip shared by FSUI, an official is heard asking a Liaki Freedom crew member, “Sir, what happened to you? It’s all OK?” to which the response comes, “All OK, all OK. Negative, no fire.”An earlier post by the union noted that the vessel was not responding.Oman-bound Liaki Freedom is an oil and chemical tanker sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands.Since June 8, three vessels with Indian crew have been targeted by the US military, resulting in the deaths of three Indian sailors in the second incident on June 10. The blockade was introduced after Tehran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz in early March, in response to US and Israeli strikes on February 28 that triggered the Middle East conflict.Nearly 20% of global crude oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a critical maritime route.The MEA has twice summoned Jason Meeks, the US Chargé d’Affaires in New Delhi, to protest the targeting of Indian-crewed tankers.External affairs minister S Jaishankar also spoke with his US counterpart Marco Rubio, reiterating India’s “strong protest” over the deaths of Indian sailors.Get the latest India news and live updates.
