NEW DELHI: Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday released 184 new varieties of 25 different crops to increase productivity, reduce input costs and address the challenges of climate change. The new varieties included 122 of cereal crops, 22 of Bt cotton, the only genetically modified crop whose commercial cultivation is allowed in India, and 13 of oilseeds, among others. The new Bt cotton varieties are updated transgenic versions that will not only increase yield but also guard crops against pests, insects and weeds, reducing the overall input cost for farmers. The 184 new varieties, developed by Indian Council of Agricultural Research institutions (60 varieties), state and central agriculture universities (62 varieties) and private seed companies (62 varieties), will reach farmers for commercial cultivation within three years.Among the 122 new varieties of cereal crops, 60 are of rice, 50 of maize, four of sorghum, five of pearl millet, and one each of ragi, small millet and proso millet. More than 50% (62) of the new cereal varieties belong to the coarse grains category, in sync with the govt’s plan to focus more on nutri-cereals and climate-resilient crops.Underlining India’s transformation from “a food-deficit country to a global food provider” over the years, Chouhan noted on the occasion that the country surpassed China in rice production and became the world’s largest producer. He said India’s rice production reached 150 million tonnes while China’s production was 145 million tonnes. “This has also strengthened India’s role as the world’s food supplier,” said the minister. The list of new varieties comprises six of pulses (1 pigeon pea, 2 green gram and 3 black gram); 13 of oilseeds (3 mustard, 4 safflower, 2 sesame and one each of til, groundnut, gobhi sarson and castor); 11 fodder crops (2 each of oats and fodder sorghum, 1 fodder maize and 6 fodder pearl millet); six of sugarcane; 24 of cotton including 22 Bt cotton; and one variety each of jute and tobacco. The release of new varieties of crops continued a “lab to land” approach of the govt so that farmers could get direct benefit of what the country’s farm scientists have been doing in a targeted manner.“Research is meaningful only when its benefits reach fields on time,” said Chouhan, directing officials to ensure that the newly released varieties should reach farmers within three years. The newly developed varieties are climate-friendly, high-yielding and resistant to major pests and diseases. They were developed to tackle challenges such as climate change, soil salinity, drought and other biotic and abiotic stresses, while also supporting natural and organic farming methods.Since the notification of seed varieties began in 1969, a total of 7,205 crop varieties have been notified in the country. Of these, 3,236 varieties were notified in the last 11-12 years alone, including 1,661 varieties in the last five years, showing increasing focus of scientists on developing climate-friendly, high-yielding, and pest and disease resistant varieties suitable for India’s diverse agro-climatic zones.About the AuthorVishwa MohanVishwa Mohan is Senior Editor at The Times of India. NEW DELHI: Disapproving a family court’s decision to involve police in a couple’s custody battle of a minor child, Supreme Court Monday said that it is atrocious to engage police in such cases.A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta termed the family court of Bhopal’s directions unconstitutional as it asked the Gurgaon police commissioner to ensure that the child was handed over to the father who is residing in Madhya Pradesh. In this case both the husband and the wife are doctors and are living separately for many years. The family court passed the order on a plea of the father who alleged that she had illegally taken the child from Bhopal without prior permission of the court and it was in clear violation of the condition imposed by the trial court in its order passed in 2022.Israel Iran WarUS-Israel-Iran War News Live Updates: Iran vows tit-for-tat strike after Trump’s 48hr ultimatum, threatens to hit US-Israel energy facilityIf America strikes us, we should attack Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai: Ex-Pak envoyTrump Pauses Planned Strikes: US halts Iran attack plan for 5 days; talks called very good and productive”The order is atrocious, unethical and unconstitutional. Using police to get custody of a child is not acceptable,” the bench said. It directed both the husband and wife to be present in court along with the child on Tuesday. The court said that it would interact with them in the chamber before passing any order. The family court in Bhopal cancelled her guardianship and granted custody of the child to the father. Jairam Ramesh (PTI image) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi after US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership amid the ongoing conflict between Islamabad and the Taliban.Reacting to Trump’s remarks praising Pakistan’s leadership, Ramesh took to X to express his disapproval. He wrote, “President Trump’s full-throated and categorical support for Pakistan in its war with Afghanistan is another setback for Indian ‘huglomacy.’ He has once again gone out of his way to praise the man whose inflammatory remarks provided the backdrop to the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam on April 22nd, 2025 that were orchestrated by Pakistan.” .Ramesh also pointed to economic concerns arising from India-US trade engagements. “Our economic diplomacy with the US has failed badly, as evinced by Mr. Modi suddenly surrendering to a clearly one-sided trade deal in which India has made firm pledges especially to import from American farmers, while the US has made vague commitments to allow for greater exports from India. Not only that, days after the agreement, the US imposed a 125.87% import duty on solar modules from India,” he wrote. On strategic diplomacy, Congress leader added, “Our strategic diplomacy has received repeated blows by President Trump repeatedly cozying up to the Pakistani establishment and reverting to the hyphenation of India and Pakistan. The Prime Minister may, through his means, manage to get awards. But the fact is that the self-declared Vishwaguru has been exposed and the world, especially the US, has got his measure.”The remarks come after Trump praised Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif amid Islamabad’s ongoing conflict with the Taliban. At a White House briefing, Trump said, “Well, I would [intervene], but I get along with Pakistan, as you know, very well. Very, very well. You have a great prime minister, you have a great general there, you have a great leader. I think two of the people that I really respect a lot. I think Pakistan is doing terrifically well.”Following Trump’s comments, US Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker also expressed Washington’s backing for Islamabad. She wrote on X, “Spoke today with Pakistan Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch to express condolences for lives lost in the recent conflict between Pakistan and the Taliban. We continue to monitor the situation closely and expressed support for Pakistan’s right to defend itself against Taliban attacks.”The escalation comes after Pakistan carried out airstrikes on Afghan cities this week, marking its most significant military action since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Subsequent Taliban retaliation triggered further Pakistani strikes, with defence minister Khawaja Asif declaring that Pakistan was now in an “open war” with Afghanistan. While countries like the UK have urged de-escalation, China called for a ceasefire and Iran offered to mediate, India has maintained a close watch over developments. The New Delhi government has repeatedly denied any US role in facilitating ceasefires between India and Pakistan, attributing progress to direct bilateral talks. . NEW DELHI: As part of a comprehensive set of recommendations to the government towards creation of a “survivor-centric framework”, the National Commission for Women has flagged the need for setting up a national acid attack case tracking registry linking FIR, medical care, compensation and rehabilitation. It has also sought the integration of online FIR systems with automatic relief and compensation triggers. The NCW’s “framework” seeks to address medical care, legal justice, rehabilitation, financial security, and long-term socio-economic inclusion for acid attack survivors across the country. The commission has submitted these recommendations to the ministries of home affairs, health and family welfare, women and child development and social justice and empowerment and sought expeditious action. From a mandatory ‘Golden Hour Protocol’ to be notified and uniformly implemented across all govt and private hospitals to ensure immediate medical intervention within the first 60 minutes following a corrosive injury to free, lifelong medical treatment and customised Ayushman Bharat packages covering repeated and staged reconstructive surgeries are some of the key recommendations. On the legal front, the commission has called for fast-tracking investigation and trial mechanisms with fixed timelines for acid attack cases. It has recommended the appointment of dedicated legal officers to assist survivors at the district level. The recommendations call for simplified procedures for FIR registration, including mandatory Zero FIRs and provision of stringent and exemplary punishment for acting as a deterrent. Direct online transfer of compensation linked with FIR registration is also among the recommendations. The NCW has also flagged the need for a uniform national compensation framework applicable across all states and UTs; time-bound disbursal of compensation (interim relief within 7–15 days) and inclusion of forced acid ingestion cases within compensation schemes. As far as the regulation of acid sale, the commission has called for strict control and licensing of acid sale at manufacturing, wholesale, and retail levels. Periodic audits and inspections of acid sale and storage have been sought, along with the need to make a clear distinction between industrial and other uses of acid. From amendments to the Poison Act, 1919, to strengthen enforcement, to mandatory record-keeping and reporting by acid vendors, are other recommendations.Drawing attention to the need to focus on psycho-social and mental health support, the NCW has recommended that the government make family counselling and caregiver support an integral part of rehabilitation and integrate psycho-social rehabilitation into all survivor welfare schemes.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosIndia Denies Crypto Scam Claims After Ship Fired Upon in Strait of Hormuz TensionsFormer J&K DGP SP Vaid on Pahalgam Attack, Terrain and Security Challenges In Jammu And KashmirIndia Marks Pahalgam Anniversary With a Strong Message To Terror Outfits & Pak | WatchEC Issues Notice To Kharge Over “Terrorist” Remark On PM Modi After BJP Complaint‘Democracy Cannot Be Jeopardised’: SC Slams Mamata Banerjee Over Alleged Interference In ED RaidIran Seizes Two Ships in Strait of Hormuz, India-Bound Vessel Sparks Global ConcernINS Dhruv: The ship behind India’s missile tracking and strategic strength‘Dot, Dot, Dot’: Rajnath Singh Warns Pakistan On Pahalgam Attack AnniversaryFrom US To Israel: Global Leaders Mark One Year Of Pahalgam Terror AttackPappu Yadav Defies NCW Notice, Doubles Down on Remarks Amid Massive Political Row123PhotostoriesHow to make South Indian Curd Rice for dinner at homeThe economy-class survival guide: How to be comfortable on a long-haul flightHow to deal with a child who answers back: 3 mindful parenting tips inspired by SadhguruAre you killing your Bougainvillea with kindness?
