National Conference president Farooq Abdullah (Image credits: IANS) NEW DELHI: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday blamed the Nowgam police station blast on improper handling of explosive material, saying it was “our mistake” and should have involved trained experts. He also expressed frustration over the growing suspicion faced by Kashmiri residents across the country following the car blast near Red Fort.J&K Police Confirm 9 Killed in Nowgam Blast After Explosives Recovered From Faridabad Blows UpThe explosion occurred late Friday night while an explosive device was being handled inside the police station premises. Nine people were killed and 32 others were injured, who were later admitted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar.Speaking to ANI, Abdullah demanded a thorough and independent probe. “This is our mistake, those who understand this explosive better, we should have talked to them first about how to deal with it instead of trying to handle it ourselves, you saw the result, nine people lost their lives. So much damage was caused to the houses there,” he said.”We haven’t yet come out of the crisis in Delhi where fingers are being pointed at every Kashmiri. When will that day come when they will accept that we are Indians and we are not responsible for this, ask those who are responsible why these doctors had to take this path? What was the reason?” he remarked.Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said speculation around the incident was unnecessary, noting that initial findings suggested an inadvertent explosion during a mandated forensic procedure.Abdullah said the circumstances surrounding the blast, including the alleged involvement of individuals with medical backgrounds, required deeper scrutiny. “There is a need for a thorough investigation and study of this,” he said, urging accountability to prevent similar incidents.According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the explosion was triggered by the highly unstable nature of material recovered during a probe into a terror module linked to the November 10 Delhi Red Fort blast, which killed 12 people.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Failure to pay the fine will add 20 months to their terms. “This would be the severest punishment ever awarded to a woman for abetment in Pocso case,” special public prosecutor Somasekharan A said. The woman reportedly befriended the man while living with her husband and daughter in Thiruvananthapuram. She later “eloped with him” and began living in rented houses in Palakkad and Malappuram between Dec 2019 and Oct 2021, taking the child along. During this period, the man repeatedly raped the girl while the mother allegedly abetted the abuse. The girl was allegedly forced to drink alcohol. Prosecutors said the woman also threatened the child into silence, telling her “a chip has been implanted in her brain and they would know if she revealed the ordeal”. The court ordered the fine be paid to the girl and directed district legal services authority to grant her additional aid under the survivor assistance scheme. tnnEnd of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosIndia Should Review No First Use Policy’: Army Veteran On Trump’s Pak Nuke Test Shocker’Consumption Going Up’: U.S. Eyes India As A Major Market For Its Energy ExportsAt Least 5 Killed, Several Injured As Passenger Train Collides With Goods Trains In ChhattisgarhInterpol’s Red Notice Triggers Global Chase For ₹13,000 Cr Cocaine Cartel Heir Rishabh Baisoya’World Must Learn Conflict Termination From India’s Op Sindoor’: Indian Air Force Chief AP SinghPak Army Chief Asim Munir’s Powers Set To Grow As Shehbaz Govt Mulls 27th Constitution AmendmentWill Nitish Kumar’s ‘Jeevika Didi’ Scheme Sway Women Voters? Picture credit: PTI A new United Nations climate report has warned that the worst may still lie ahead for India and the world as temperatures in Rajasthan soared to 48.2°C on Wednesday and heatwave conditions gripped large parts of northern and central India. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) projected this week that there is a 75 per cent chance that average global temperatures between 2026 and 2030 will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels: the threshold set by the 2015 Paris Agreement as the limit of safe warming. There is also a 91 per cent chance that at least one of the next five years will breach that mark individually, and an 86 per cent chance that one of those years will surpass 2024’s record as the hottest year ever measured, as reported by the AP.UN climate chief Simon Stiell, responding to the WMO report, said that “the baking temperatures in Europe, India and elsewhere show yet again the brutal human and economic impacts of humanity still burning colossal amounts of coal, oil and gas.” He warned that “every nation is already paying a huge price from this global climate crisis.”The timing of the report feels immediate for Indians currently facing a brutal pre-monsoon summer. India’s Meteorological Department (IMD), in its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued Wednesday morning, warned that “heat wave to severe heat wave conditions” are very likely at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, with severe heat wave conditions also gripping parts of West Rajasthan, where Sriganganagar recorded the country’s highest maximum temperature of 48.2°C on Tuesday.According to the IMD bulletin, “heat wave conditions very likely in isolated/some pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh on 28th,” with West Rajasthan facing “severe heat wave conditions in some pockets” on the same day.The bulletin further noted that maximum temperatures across Northwest India are expected to fall by 6-8°C between May 28 and 30, as thunderstorm activity intensifies but only briefly. Temperatures are forecast to rise again by 4-6°C between May 31 and June 2.Imperial College London climate scientist Friederike Otto said that a full year or more above the 1.5-degree mark “means a whole range of extreme weather events, probably many so hot, wet, or dry that it exceeds anything we’ve experienced in the past and thus, crucially, anything our city planning, agriculture etc. has anticipated.”The IMD bulletin urged farmers across Uttar Pradesh to “provide frequent irrigation and mulching for standing crops such as maize, green gram, black gram, sugarcane, sunflower, vegetables, and fruit plants such as mango, banana, and papaya.” It also flagged that the extreme heat will not go unaccompanied. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 80–90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph are forecast over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh on May 29, the kind of violent weather swings that scientists say will become more common as the planet warms. Isolated hailstorm activity is expected across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh on May 28 and 29. Dust storms are also forecast for Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on both days. The WMO’s five-year outlook warned that “a hotter globe from the burning of coal, oil and gas means more extreme weather including floods, droughts and heat waves.” The pattern is already manifesting across India in a single week: scorching heat in the north and west, intense rainfall and thunderstorms across the northeast and east and a southwest monsoon that, while advancing, has yet to bring relief to the most heat-stressed regions. The IMD bulletin noted that “conditions are favorable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area, southwest, eastcentral and westcentral Bay of Bengal” over the next two to three days but for states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and much of the Indo-Gangetic plain, monsoon onset remains weeks away.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Bakrid wishes, messages and eid 2026!About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
