Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran (File photo) NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Saturday responded sharply to alleged objectionable comments made by state BJP president Nainar Nagendran about actor-politician Vijay and actor Trisha.DMK MP Kanimozhi NVN Somu condemned the remarks, calling it “uncivilised” to target the personal lives of those engaged in active politics. She also criticised women leaders in the Tamil Nadu BJP for not speaking out against Nagendran. ‘To Remove Corrupt DMK’: TTV Dhinakaran Meets Goyal As AMMK Rejoins NDA Ahead Of Tamil Nadu Polls “Criticising the personal life of someone involved in politics in the public sphere is uncivilised. Moreover, speaking in a way that degrades the dignity and honour of a woman who has no connection to politics is an act that tarnishes womanhood. For Mr Nainar Nagendran, the female leaders in the BJP remaining silent without condemning this is an injustice,” Kanimozhi posted on X.Another DMK MP, Tamizhachi Thangapandian, also criticised Nagendran, saying it was “unbecoming” of the Tamil Nadu unit president of a party that leads the Union government to make disparaging remarks about a woman expressing political views while travelling in public. She added that civilised politics requires treating women with “dignity and respect.”“It is not seemly for the Tamil Nadu state president of the party ruling India to speak disparagingly about a woman travelling in public while expressing political opinions. Speaking of and treating women with dignity is what constitutes civilised politics,” Thangapandian wrote on X.The controversy erupted after Nagendran commented on Vijay’s recent rally in Salem. Referring to the actor’s lack of political experience, he suggested that Vijay should focus on his family and “come out of actor Trisha.”Vijay, who founded and heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), earlier addressed supporters in Salem ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. He said that while his party may lack political experience, it does not have “experience in corruption.”“Other than scamming experience, what are the other qualities do the people who question my experience have? We don’t have experience, yes. We don’t have experience in looting,” he said, in an attack on the DMK.His remarks followed Tamil Nadu and DMK supremo chief minister MK Stalin announcing that Rs 5,000 had been credited to women beneficiaries under the Kalaignar Women’s Rights Scheme. Vijay criticised the financial assistance, describing it as a “lure” rather than a genuine welfare measure.(With ANI inputs)About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. – Raghav Chadha on Monday posted a video on social media, explaining his decision to quit the Aam Aadmi Party and also addressing the criticism surrounding his move to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. In the video shared on Instagram, Chadha said he had been receiving a large number of messages following his announcement. He said, “For the past three days, I have been getting a lot of messages from all of you. Most of you are giving me best wishes and congratulating me. And some people want to know the reasons behind my decision.” Chadha said he had devoted 15 years of his youth to the Aam Aadmi Party, describing himself as a founding member of the organisation. He said, “I didn’t come into politics to make my career. I became a founding member of a political party. I gave 15 years of my prime youth to this party with my blood, sweat, and a lot of hard work.” He went on to sharply criticise the current functioning of the party, alleging that it had changed over time and was no longer the organisation it once was. He said, “Today, this party is no longer the old party. Today, this party has a toxic work environment. You are stopped from working. You are stopped from speaking in the parliament.”Explaining his decision, Chadha said he felt increasingly out of place within the party and described himself as “the right man, but in the wrong party.” He said he had considered multiple options, including exiting politics entirely, attempting internal reform, or shifting to another political platform, ultimately choosing the latter. He also claimed that the decision was not isolated, stating, “Not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six—seven MPs have decided to break their relationship with this political party.” He added, “One person can be wrong, two people can be wrong, but not seven people can be wrong.”Responding to criticism that the exit was driven by pressure or fear, Chadha rejected the allegation. He said, “We did not leave out of fear but because of disappointment, disenchantment, and disgust.”He further asserted that despite leaving AAP, he would continue his political engagement and public outreach, stating, “I will continue to raise your problems with more energy and enthusiasm.”Within 24 hours of announcing his exit from the Aam Aadmi Party and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha reportedly saw a sharp decline in his Instagram following, losing over 1 million followers, the number that later increased to a significant 2 million. His move also triggered a strong backlash on social media, with several of his supporters criticising his decision to join the BJP. In addition, his old video clips and past statements in which he had criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party resurfaced online, further intensifying the debate around his political shift.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: Ahead of the expected launch of ECINet platform — which integrates 40 election-related apps or websites onto a single, unified application, enabling ease of use — later this month, Election Commission has invited all citizens to download its trial version and offer their suggestions on how to improve the platform.Suggestions may be given till January 10 by using the ‘submit a suggestion’ tab on the app, EC said in a release on Saturday. The trial version of the ECINet app enables better voter services, quicker availability of polling percentage trends and also the publication of index cards — compiling information and datasets from a recently held election — within 72 hours of close of poll, an exercise that previously took several weeks or months. The app was successfully tried out during the Bihar assembly elections and by-elections held last year. The ECINet platform is being continually improved and refined based on the feedback from state and UT chief electoral officers, district election officers, observers and other field officials. The user suggestions received over the next week shall be examined and the platform further updated, based on the suggestions found viable, to make it more user-friendly. The platform will officially be launched this month. ECINet is one of the major initiatives of the EC piloted by CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
