CHANDIGARH/ROHTAK: Haryana govt granted another 30 days’ parole to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the Dera Sacha Sauda chief serving 20 years in prison for raping two women disciples. Tuesday’s release was his 16th parole since 2020 and his second this year after a 40-day parole from Jan 5. Ram Rahim, convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in 2017 and jailed since August that year, has spent more than 400 days outside prison since first leaving custody on one-day furlough in Oct 2020. He walked out of Sunaria jail in Rohtak around 6.30am and headed for the dera headquarters in Sirsa in a convoy of eight luxury vehicles. He is due back in prison on June 24. Sources said authorities cleared his Sirsa stay after district magistrate’s approval. Dera spokesperson said the sect’s chief had been released “as per his legal entitlements”. Under prison rules, convicts can avail of up to 10 weeks of parole annually. Time spent outside prison on parole is added to sentence period and does not count as time served. Convicts sentenced to more than 10 years are also entitled to three weeks of furlough annually, which counts towards sentence served. Combined, parole and furlough can keep a convict out of jail for up to 98 days a year, though such relief depends on multiple clearances and discretion exercised by authorities. He was also convicted in murders of former dera manager Ranjit Singh and journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, though Punjab and Haryana high court subsequently acquitted him in both cases.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘Unwarranted References’: India Blasts China, Pakistan Over Jammu-Kashmir RemarksTamil Nadu Vs Karnataka: Vijay Urges PM Modi To Reject Mekedatu Dam Proposal Ahead Of Delhi VisitHoney Singh Joins BJP Punjab Campaign Against Drugs, Meets Tarun ChughSuvendu Adhikari Calls For Fast Deportation Of Alleged Illegal Bangladeshi Infiltrators In BengalCongress Denies Karnataka CM Post Tussle After Siddaramaiah-DK Shivakumar Delhi MeetingSSC GD Exam: Furious Students Protest After Candidate Numbers Exceed Actual Seating CapacityCM Suvendu Adhikari Announces ₹5 Fish-Rice Meals, ₹3,000 Aid For Women In West BengalBJP Leader Annamalai Criticises Mid-Session Implementation Of Centre’s 3-Language RuleWhy The Quad’s Delhi Meet Could Reshape India’s Energy And Maritime StrategyTaiwan’s Stock Market Just Overtook India — And It’s Almost Entirely Because of One Company123Photostories7 everyday etiquettes every parent should teach their children from an early ageMrunal Thakur just made mint green the main character of festive fashion this yearHarmanpreet Kaur traded blue jersey energy for elegant desi glam at the Padma Awards 2026Top 2026 romance teen dramas that are book adaptations: From ‘Off Campus’ to ‘Love Hypothesis’Why does your hair feel so rough and frizzy in summer? 7 very common habits that are damaging itWhat’s inside the world’s top 10 airports? File photo NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran on Saturday appealed to party workers not to leave the BJP following former state chief K. Annamalai’s resignation and launch of a new political movement, asserting that the party would not be affected by the development.Addressing reporters in Chennai, Nagendran urged cadres to remain with the BJP and avoid joining any other party or movement.”My request to the BJP cadres – don’t go to any other party or any other movement. Please, be here. BJP is a huge party in the world. We have the number one leader in the world, PM Modi,” he said.Nagendran also dismissed suggestions that Annamalai’s departure would dent the BJP’s support base in Tamil Nadu.”There is no impact. The BJP is a huge party. So many leaders went out from the party, then joined again,” he said.Appeal comes amid resignations and new political movementNagendran’s remarks come a day after Annamalai formally quit the BJP and unveiled a new political initiative aimed at promoting what he described as “common man politics” and ending “cult” and dynastic politics in the state.Annamalai’s exit has already triggered a series of resignations within the Tamil Nadu BJP, including those of state vice-president Karu Nagarajan, state secretary Sumathi Venkatesh and several other office-bearers, fuelling speculation that more leaders could join his new political platform.Annamalai, a former IPS officer who led the BJP’s expansion efforts in Tamil Nadu, has said his political goals required a new and more inclusive platform. He has maintained that he left the BJP on amicable terms and continues to respect Prime Minister Narendra Modi.BJP dismisses concerns over cadre exodusDespite the resignations, Nagendran insisted the BJP remained strong and would continue to grow in the state. He maintained that the party’s future was not tied to any one individual and expressed confidence that workers would remain committed to the BJP’s ideology. His remarks echoed the party’s earlier position that the BJP is an ideology-driven organisation and would not suffer a setback because of a single leader’s departure. The appeal also comes as Annamalai’s newly launched movement, “We The Leaders”, has attracted significant attention. The initiative drew more than eight lakh volunteers within hours of its launch, signalling strong early interest in the former BJP leader’s new political venture.Annamalai has said the movement would focus on encouraging professionals, technocrats and ordinary citizens to participate in governance while promoting a “growth-oriented and culturally rooted” politics in Tamil Nadu.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
