PTI photo NEW DELHI: Kerala’s 2026 assembly election is set for a closely contested finish, with counting day expected to provide clarity after weeks of intense campaigning and high voter engagement.Counting of votes will begin at 8am on May 4 across all 140 constituencies, with early trends likely to emerge within a few hours. Real-time updates will be available on the Election Commission website, along with live coverage, analysis, and seat tallies on The Times of India.Follow full coverage of elections here Polling for the election was conducted in a single phase, with voter turnout remaining robust and consistent with Kerala’s tradition of high electoral participation. What exit polls predictedExit polls have indicated a closely fought contest between the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front, with only a narrow gap separating the two alliances.According to the poll of polls, the Congress-led UDF is projected to cross the majority mark with around 72 seats in the 140-member assembly, while the LDF is expected to remain close behind with approximately 63 seats. However, projections vary significantly across pollsters. Axis My India has indicated a wider margin in favour of the UDF, projecting 83 seats for the opposition alliance and 55 for the ruling front. In contrast, the PMARQ exit poll has predicted a majority for the LDF with around 75 seats, highlighting the uncertainty around the final outcome. A test of Kerala’s political patternKerala’s electoral history has largely been defined by an alternating pattern between the LDF and UDF. However, the LDF’s consecutive victory in 2021 under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan broke that trend, making the 2026 election a key test of whether the state reverts to its traditional cycle or continues with the incumbent. For the UDF, the election represents an opportunity to return to power by capitalising on anti-incumbency sentiment. For the LDF, it is a chance to consolidate its governance record and retain its position in what remains the Left’s most significant stronghold in the country.Campaign narrativeThe campaign saw a shift in focus over time. Early phases were dominated by issues such as corruption allegations, economic concerns, backdoor appointments, the Sabarimala gold heist controversy, and rehabilitation challenges following the Wayanad landslides. As campaigning intensified, the narrative evolved into sharper political exchanges, including allegations of covert alliances, debates around communal polarisation, and direct attacks between senior leaders. The LDF framed the election as a referendum on the “Pinarayi model”, highlighting welfare expansion, infrastructure development, and administrative centralisation, while promising further expansion of welfare programmes. The UDF, in contrast, advanced a narrative centred on accountability, questioning the efficiency and fiscal sustainability of the government’s policies while seeking to tap into voter fatigue and economic concerns. What to expectWith projections indicating a narrow margin, the final outcome is likely to hinge on closely contested constituencies and late swings in voter preference. As counting begins, Kerala’s verdict will determine not only the next government but also whether its long-standing electoral pattern reasserts itself or undergoes a structural shift.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. GUWAHATI: A special CBI court in Guwahati has framed charges against six men and ordered their trial over one of the most brutal crimes of Manipur’s ethnic violence, in which three women were stripped naked and paraded before a mob, two of them gang-raped in broad daylight, and two relatives of one them killed on May 4, 2023.It is the first case investigated by CBI in the Manipur violence to move to trial. The central agency has taken over 27 FIRs linked to the unrest – 19 involving crimes against women, three armoury loot cases, two murders, and one each of rioting, kidnapping and criminal conspiracy.Last Friday, special judge Chatra Bhukhan Gogoi ruled that all six accused “be tried by this court”. Appearing through video-conferencing from Manipur, the accused pleaded not guilty after charges were read out and explained.CBI prosecutor Swayamjeet Sharma told the court the investigation had yielded sufficient material and a strong prima facie case. Defence lawyers argued the evidence did not warrant charges for all offences listed in the chargesheet. The court ordered four accused – Huirem Herodash Meitei, Ningombam Tomba Singh alias Tomthin, Yumlembam Jiban Singh alias Naocha alias Sana and Pukhrihongbam Suranjoy Meitei – lodged at Manipur central jail in Sajiwa, to be shifted to Guwahati for physical production and for signing the charges on Jan 16. Two others – Arun Khundongbam alias Nanao and Nameirakpam Kiran Meitei – who are on bail, were directed to appear in person on the same date “without fail”.”Since the question of identification of the accused persons during the course of trial is involved, the physical production of the accused persons is necessary for convenience and fairness of trial,” the judge said.Charges include promoting enmity between Kuki and Meitei communities, molestation, sexual assault, gang rape, physical assault, criminal conspiracy, violations under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and damage and looting of property.About the AuthorPrabin KalitaPrabin Kalita is a journalist at The Times of India and is currently the Chief of Bureau (northeast). Representative image NEW DELHI: Indian carriers have got a Rs 5,000-crore lifeline during the debilitating Iran war that has led to a sharp hike in operating cost along with a decrease in passenger numbers. The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi on Tuesday approved the emergency credit line guarantee scheme (ECLGS) 5.0 to provide credit guarantee coverage to several sectors, including airlines. Targeting an overall additional credit flow of over Rs 2.5 lakh crore for various sectors, this will allow “eligible borrowers to tide over any short-term liquidity mismatches in view of West Asia crisis.”An airline can get upto Rs 1,500 crore under this move. For airline sector, the tenor of this loan will be seven years from the date of first disbursement including moratorium of two years. While IndiGo and Tata Sons’ Air India group have the resources to weather the perfect storm — sharp rise in jet fuel price and the rupee crashing with a significant part of their operating costs being dollar-denominated, — many other weaker players are struggling to survive. One airline, for instance, is unable to pay salaries, PF or even TDS on time for a long time now. This ECLGS could provide them some liquidity and avert a shutdown for now.“Eligible borrowers: MSMEs and non-MSMEs with existing working capital limits and scheduled passenger airlines having outstanding credit facilities, as of March 31, 2026, provided their accounts are standard…. Additional credit up to 20% of peak working capital utilised during Q4 FY 26 (capped at Rs 100 crore). For airlines up to 100% (capped at Rs 1,500 crore per borrower, subject to satisfying certain specific conditions),” said a government statement.“The scheme aims to enable businesses to tide over the challenges arising from the West Asia conflict. Additionally, this is expected to help businesses maintain their operations, protect jobs, and sustain supply chains. The proposed credit guarantee scheme is a major step to help businesses, particularly MSMEs and airline sector, to ensure their additional working capital needs, are catered by the banks & financial institutions. By providing timely liquidity, the scheme will sustain the businesses and prevent job losses,” the statement added.Follow the latest election results 2026, live updates, winner lists, constituency-wise results, party-wise trends and full coverage for Tamil Nadu election results, West Bengal election results, Kerala election results, Assam election results and Puducherry election results results on Times of India.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosIndia Seeks To Lease Three Ultra Heavy Lift Helicopters To Boost CapabilityAIMIM Chief Owaisi Says Muslim Votes Wasted on Secular Parties, Calls for ShiftKejriwal Alleges BJP “Robbed” Punjab of Rajya Sabha Seats, Vows Political Revenge“Democracy Being Mocked”: Bhagwant Mann Meets President Over Defection of 7 AAP Rajya Sabha MPsNCERT Clears Revised Class 8 Textbook After Judiciary Chapter Row And Public ApologyPM Modi call Fujairah Attack ‘Unacceptable’, Three Indians Injured In UAEPunjab Showdown: AAP MLAs Head to President Over Rajya Sabha RowIndia Rejects Nepal’s Objection To Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Route Via Lipulekh PassNepal Objects To India-China Plan To Conduct Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via LipulekhIndia-Linked LPG Tanker MT Sarv Shakti Heads To Visakhapatnam After Crossing Hormuz123PhotostoriesGreater Noida’s top 5 real estate hotspots fuelled by the upcoming Jewar AirportThe ‘Big Four’ snakes of India and where travellers can spot them in the wildFrom ‘Leo’ to ‘Master’: Looking at ‘Jana Nayagan’ star Vijay Thalapathy’s biggest box office blockbustersThis mountain range is the oldest in India—and older than dinosaurs: 5 stunning facts5 Met Gala 2026 looks that turned famous paintings into iconic fashion moments5 simple and mindful steps for office goers to grow jade plants that attract prosperity and positivityWhat really happens when you drink Beetroot juice every day for a weekBEST quotes by Farah Khan that show her unfiltered HONESTY and BOLD take on BollywoodTop 8 trending art styles to decorate your apartment in 20265 popular and adorable cat breeds for pet parents123Hot PicksBarrackpore election resultTiruchirappalli election resultMettupalayam election resultsEttumanoor election resultPerambur election resultBagnan election resultKazhakkoottam election resultTop TrendingIran warRahul GandhiBadruddin AjmalIPL Playoff Qualification ScenariosIPL 2026 Points TableMI IPL Playoff Qualification ScenariosPM ModiNEET 2026: Exam-day guideSRMJEEE 2026 Phase 1 ResultTVK Chief Vijay
