Mumbai: The Bombay HC on Wednesday granted bail to Sharad Kalaskar (33), who was convicted in May 2024 of the 2013 murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar.Kalaskar had filed an appeal before the high court against his conviction by the trial court in Pune and sought bail till its disposal. Justices A S Gadkari and R R Bhonsale said not only is the likelihood remote for the appeal to be taken up for final hearing any time soon, but the evidence on record is doubtful. Kalaskar’s identification was improper and had lost its sanctity, and two eyewitnesses’ testimony created a doubt, HC said while setting the bail at Rs 50,000.Dabholkar’s son, Hamid, said an appeal against the grant of bail would be filed in the Supreme Court. “Kalaskar is also an accused in the (communist politician) Govind Pansare murder case,” he said. The murderous assault happened on Aug 20, 2013, when Dabholkar, a crusader against superstition, was on his morning walk. HC had reserved the bail plea for orders on Dec 23, 2025.Kalaskar’s senior counsel Niteen Pradhan had assailed the validity of evidence, including the alleged assailant’s very identity based on a photograph shown to witnesses, on the basis of which the alleged assailant was nailed by the trial court. The state, represented by additional public prosecutor Ashish Satpute, and CBI, represented by special public prosecutor Amit Munde, opposed the bail plea, saying two witnesses had seen the shooting.About the AuthorSwati DeshpandeSwati Deshpande is Senior editor at The Times of India, Mumbai, where she has been covering courts for over a decade. A CAPF official stands guard while voters wait to cast their votes at a polling station during the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, in Purba Bardhaman on Wednesday. (@CEOWestBengal/ANI Photo) Exit polls on Wednesday agreed that the BJP-led alliance would win Assam comfortably, the UDF would unseat the LDF in Kerala and the AINRC-BJP combine would retain Puducherry but disagreed on the outcome in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The most startling prediction was Axis My India’s projection of Tamil Nadu being a tight race between the Vijay-led TVK (98-120 seats) and the DMK alliance (92-110) – in that order – with the AIADMK-led NDA reduced to an also-ran in the 234-member House. The other three exit polls being taken into account here all gave the DMK-led coalition a majority, though a reduced one from five years earlier. Blockbuster debut by Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu? On West Bengal, while Axis MY India did not release its findings on Wednesday and some other well-known pollsters too preferred to wait for another day, of the three polls here, the one by P Marq projected BJP to most likely win a majority in the 294-member assembly and Matrize gave the saffron party the edge though not a majority in a state it has never won in the past. The third poll, People’s Pulse, in contrast, projected a decisive TMC victory that would give Mamata Banerjee a fourth consecutive term of office. All four exit polls suggested that the NDA was likely to win a two-thirds majority in the 126-member Assam assembly, which would also mean BJP for the first time winning a majority on its own in the northeastern state. The Congress-led alliance was projected to bag between 24 and 40 seats. If Left loses, it will not be in office in any stateIn Kerala, the consensus was that the UDF would win though the projections ranged from as little as 70 of the 140 seats at the bottom of the Matrize range to 90 at the top end of the Axis My India range. The LDF was projected to end up with at best 69 seats, which would mean that the Left would for the first since 1977 not be in office in any state. Exit polls have had a patchy record in India. Hyderabad: Five abandoned Siberian Huskies trudging along a village road on the outskirts of Hyderabad under the scorching sun were rescued Wednesday, while a sixth was found dead nearby, possibly after suffering a heatstroke. Passers-by reported seeing a larger pack of pedigreed dogs wandering through a scrubland near Nandigaon village along the Shankarpally-Patancheru Road.Animal rescuers from AASRA Foundation and SWAN suspect an unidentified breeder abandoned at least another 30 dogs in the area over a week ago. The rescued Huskies were “extremely exhausted and weak” when they were found, said Gowri Vandana of AASRA Foundation. Villagers said they saw a truck bringing 35 to 40 Huskies to the area on the night of April 20. An investigation is under way.The rescued animals, between two and four years old, have been shifted to shelters for treatment and medical evaluation. “We are awaiting their blood reports to understand if these dogs were used for any illegal experiments,” said Harsh Kishor Bhatnagar of SWAN. The area is known to be the hub of illegal breeding. “Puppy mills have proliferated, catering to a market where a dog can fetch anywhere between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh,” said an animal welfare worker.About the AuthorAmisha RajaniDriven by curiosity and a human interest lens, Amisha is dedicated to impactful storytelling.
