NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday reserved its order on Congress leader Pawan Khera’s anticipatory bail plea, with Khera telling the court it was “not necessary to humiliate him by arrest” in the passport row case linked to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.During the hearing, Khera told the court that the allegations against him were a matter of trial. He further said, “Some sections invoked against me are bailable, others don’t require arrest.”Khera also submitted that if he does not get anticipatory bail in the case registered against him in Assam, “then purpose of pre-arrest bail is gone.”A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar reserved its verdict after hearing arguments from both sides.Appearing for Khera, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said the case did not warrant custodial interrogation and reiterated that arrest was unnecessary.Opposing the plea, solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing the Assam government, told the court that Khera had shown “fake” and “doctored” copies of passports belonging to the chief minister’s wife. He also alleged that Khera had been absconding and disseminating videos, while maintaining that claims of multiple citizenship were false. The case stems from allegations made by Khera regarding Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, following which criminal complaints were filed against him at the Guwahati crime branch under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.Khera has challenged an April 24 order of the Gauhati High Court, which denied him anticipatory bail.Earlier, the Telangana high court had granted him a seven-day transit anticipatory bail. However, the Assam Police moved the apex court against the relief, following which the Supreme Court stayed the transit bail and directed Khera to approach the Gauhati High Court. The top court is now expected to deliver its order on Khera’s anticipatory bail plea in due course.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosYogi Adityanath Attacks Samajwadi Party In Assembly, Cites 1995 Guest House CaseIran’s Araghchi Speaks To EAM Jaishankar As West Asia Crisis Deepens, India Calls For De-escalationWhy the India-Bangladesh Border Fencing Delay Is Under SC and High Court Scrutiny: ExplainedDRDO & Indian Navy Successfully Conduct Maiden Salvo Launch Of NASM-SR Missile System12 Killed, Dozens Injured As Pickup Collides With SUV On Indore–Ahmedabad HighwayNYC Mayor Mamdani Says He’ll Urge King Charles To Return Kohinoor DiamondRaghav Chadha Fallout: Who Really Wins and Loses in Punjab?Mumbai–Pune Expressway’s ‘Missing Link’ Opens May 1: Faster Travel, Better Safety, No Extra Toll90-Year-Old Rejects Apology, Then Court Pushes ₹20 Crore Case to 2046Ganga Expressway Inaugurated: What ₹1,500 Toll Gets You on UP’s 594-km High-Speed Corridor | PM Modi123PhotostoriesSimple wall decor ideas that can transform your homeGK Fact of the Day: 6 accidental innovations that revolutionised everyday life6 celebrities with twins and how parenting them is differentWhat happens when you knead roti dough with curd’Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2′: Akashdeep Saigal’s casting as Rio sparks meme fest online – have a lookTaking painkillers in summer? But, more than fate, as per my ideology and as per my service to the party so far, Sonia Gandhi takes decisions regarding me,” he said.”But, that question does not arise now.
