NEW DELHI: Several of the Congress leaders who contested the recent Bihar assembly elections conveyed to the party’s top brass on Thursday that the NDA government’s Rs 10,000 transfer to women beneficiaries, delay in seat-sharing deal among the Mahagathbandhan allies, internal rift and “electoral malpractices” were among the reasons for the poll debacle.Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary in-charge organisation K C Venugopal met the candidates to hold a review meeting with them days after the Bihar election defeat.PM Modi Reveals Why NDA Swept Bihar, Says Emotional Mode And 24×7 Development Win Elections In IndiaThe three top leaders met the candidates in batches of 10.Later, they also deliberated on the reasons for the massive defeat with senior state leaders, including Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Ram, AICC leader in-charge of Bihar Krishna Allavaru, Congress MPs Akhilesh Prasad Singh and Tariq Anwar, and Independent MP from Purnia Pappu Yadav. There were some reports of an altercation between two candidates during the review meeting. However, Pappu Yadav refuted them and said these reports were “false”.After the meeting, Venugopal said the four-hour review meeting made one thing absolutely clear — the Bihar election was not a genuine mandate; it was a grossly managed and fabricated outcome.”They highlighted how SIR (Special Intensive Revision) enabled targeted voter deletions and dubious additions, how blatant cash bribery under the so-called MMRY (Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana) scheme was used to influence voters even at the polling stations and how identical margins across constituencies exposed a pattern that no independent election commission would ever overlook,” Venugopal said on X.”These issues point to organised electoral malpractices and brazen violations of the Model Code of Conduct, carried out under the watch of an ECI that has increasingly behaved like an active collaborator in BJP’s election rigging,” he said. What happened in Bihar is nothing short of a direct assault on democracy, Venugopal alleged.”The Congress Party will not allow this stolen mandate to become the new normal. The fight to protect India’s democracy continues — fearlessly, relentlessly, and with the people by our side,” he said. The Congress’ Araria MLA, Abidur Rahman, said, “There were several reasons for the defeat. The first reason is that 10,000 rupees were given in violation of the model code of conduct. The alliance could not be formed at the right time. There was a friendly contest in 10-11 seats, which sent the wrong message to the public.” “The alliance should have been formed on time. The spread of religious and caste frenzy had an impact,” he said, and also cited AIMIM’s strong performance in the Seemanchal belt of Bihar. The situation was such that if a man voted for the Congress, his wife voted for the NDA, Rahman said, elaborating on the impact of the transfer of Rs 10,000 to women beneficiaries. There was discord between the old and young party leaders, Rahman claimed.Another contestant Tauqeer Alam said that the leadership met the candidates in groups of 10 and held a discussion on the reasons for the defeat. The Congress won only six of the 61 seats it contested in the Bihar Assembly elections. Its state unit president Rajesh Kumar lost from the Kutumba seat, legislature party leader in the outgoing Assembly, Shakeel Ahmed Khan, was defeated by JD(U) candidate Dulal Chandra Goswami from the Kadwa seat by a margin of 18,368 votes. The six Congress candidates who won are Surendra Prasad (Valmiki Nagar), Abhisekh Ranjan (Chanpatia), Manoj Bishwas (Forbesganj), Abidur Rahman (Araria), Mohd Qamrul Hoda (Kishanganj) and Manohar Prasad Singh (Manihari).End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosIndia Is a Key Ally, Cyprus Assures Strong Push to Finalise India–EU FTA TalksImran Khan Health Rumour: PTI Holds Sit In Outside Adiala Jail, KP CM Sohail Afridi Stages ProtestRam Madhav Challenges ‘No-Religion’ Narrative in White Collar Terror DebateAustralia Says India Is Now A Leading Global Power, Credits PM Modi For Transforming World DynamicsOusted PM Sheikh Hasina Faces Fresh Conviction as Court Awards 21-Year TermPM Modi Announces Major Move Allowing Private Players Into Nuclear Sector To Spur Advanced ReactorsExplained: Why Vikram-I Could Transform India’s Satellite Launch Market And Global Space Leadership‘Pak, Bangladesh, US…’: BJP Alleges Congress Using Foreign ‘X’ Accounts to Set India’s NarrativePakistan’s Adiala Jail Issues Statement On Imran Khan’s Health Amid Viral Death RumoursThe Indrajaal Ranger: India Unveils AI-Enabled Anti-Drone Patrol Vehicle In Hyderabad123PhotostoriesTaarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah: From Dilip Joshi being older than Amit Bhatt to Mandar Chandwadkar leaving his Dubai job for acting; Lesser-known facts about the castGastroenterologist doctor reveals the power of eating 3 eggs everyday5 must-visit national parks in the USA that are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites5 things to do during Brahma Muhurta for 21 days to transform your lifeThe hidden skill of Metacognition: What is it and how it makes the brain work smarterFrom Jonathan to Alagba: 5 tortoises across the world with exceptionally long lifespansMillie Bobby Brown’s promotional looks for ‘Stranger Things 5’Despite 180 flops and 47 disasters, THIS actor became a cult icon in Russia — His name will surprise youStressed at work? SRINAGAR: J&K Police on Thursday conducted a series of raids across Kashmir Valley at multiple locations allegedly linked to Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has accused his own party’s government in Jammu and Kashmir of failing to fulfill electoral promises and adopting the BJP’s approach of political slogans. Speaking in Ganderbal, Mehdi criticized the leadership for shifting focus from Article 370 restoration to statehood, arguing this aligns with the BJP’s agenda. National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi accused Thursday his own party’s govt in J&K of “failing to fulfil electoral promises and following BJP’s approach of mere political slogans”.Mehdi, critical of the leadership for nearly a year, launched the latest attack from chief minister Omar Abdullah’s assembly constituency Ganderbal as the NC began a two-day working committee meeting under president Farooq Abdullah and the CM, who is also party vice-president.“We sought votes for restoration of constitutional guarantees under Article 370, and it was one of the main reasons we received a huge mandate in the (Oct 2024 assembly) polls. We promised to strive for the release of political prisoners. We must fulfil all commitments. We can’t adopt BJP’s language after coming to office,” the Srinagar MP told supporters in Ganderbal.According to Mehdi, NC’s election campaign last year was centered on Article 370 but it has focused on seeking statehood (restoration) since taking office. “If we shift from Article 370 to statehood, we are aligning with BJP’s line,” the MP argued.Mehdi claimed ignorance about NC’s meeting. “I am a permanent member of the working committee. This is the first time since 2002 that I have not been invited,” the MP said.Mehdi suggested that his disagreements with the party stemmed from his insistence that it must work on the issues over which votes were sought. “A year has passed. We have not worked on our political and governance agenda. We have not rationalised reservations in J&K. We cannot tell open-merit candidates who are crossing the age bar that we still have five years to act,” Mehdi said, adding the govt had not also kept its promise of 200 units of free electricity.Insisting that he was not protesting against his party but reminding it of its promises and manifesto, Mehdi pointed out that J&K’s people had reposed trust in mainstream political parties after a long time last year, handing NC a big mandate that must be honoured.Mehdi brushed away at statements by deputy CM Surinder Choudhary asking the MP to raise issues in Parliament instead of trying to stay in the limelight. “He (Choudhary) was earlier with BJP, then he joined PDP, and now he is in NC. In his politics there is no principle, no direction, no value,” Mehdi said. The MP also criticised the Omar-led govt over a demolition drive in the Valley against settlers, saying people had voted for NC so that “what is happening in Uttar Pradesh does not happen in Kashmir”.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosIndia Is a Key Ally, Cyprus Assures Strong Push to Finalise India–EU FTA TalksImran Khan Health Rumour: PTI Holds Sit In Outside Adiala Jail, KP CM Sohail Afridi Stages ProtestRam Madhav Challenges ‘No-Religion’ Narrative in White Collar Terror DebateAustralia Says India Is Now A Leading Global Power, Credits PM Modi For Transforming World DynamicsOusted PM Sheikh Hasina Faces Fresh Conviction as Court Awards 21-Year TermPM Modi Announces Major Move Allowing Private Players Into Nuclear Sector To Spur Advanced ReactorsExplained: Why Vikram-I Could Transform India’s Satellite Launch Market And Global Space Leadership‘Pak, Bangladesh, US…’: BJP Alleges Congress Using Foreign ‘X’ Accounts to Set India’s NarrativePakistan’s Adiala Jail Issues Statement On Imran Khan’s Health Amid Viral Death RumoursThe Indrajaal Ranger: India Unveils AI-Enabled Anti-Drone Patrol Vehicle In Hyderabad123PhotostoriesTaarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah: From Dilip Joshi being older than Amit Bhatt to Mandar Chandwadkar leaving his Dubai job for acting; Lesser-known facts about the castGastroenterologist doctor reveals the power of eating 3 eggs everyday5 must-visit national parks in the USA that are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites5 things to do during Brahma Muhurta for 21 days to transform your lifeThe hidden skill of Metacognition: What is it and how it makes the brain work smarterFrom Jonathan to Alagba: 5 tortoises across the world with exceptionally long lifespansMillie Bobby Brown’s promotional looks for ‘Stranger Things 5’Despite 180 flops and 47 disasters, THIS actor became a cult icon in Russia — His name will surprise youStressed at work? Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar clarified his “word power” social media post was intended for the legal fraternity on Constitution Day, not a political jab at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. NEW DELHI: Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday clarified that his recent social media post on “word power” was meant to mark Constitution Day and was addressed to the legal fraternity after chief minister Siddaramaiah countered him thorough a social media post amid ongoing debate over leadership and political messaging.Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar explained the intent behind his post and said, “Yesterday I was speaking on the our Constitution day. Whatever judges speak, whatever politicians speak, whatever is speak is very much important. I said that all you, all the advocates for all the advocate. I said when you speak you should be. When you convey the message, it should be very important.”His clarification followed a sharp exchange between the two senior leaders that played out publicly. On Wednesday, Shivakumar wrote on X that “WORD POWER IS WORLD POWER. The biggest force in the world is to keep one’s word. Be it a judge, president or anyone else including myself, everyone has to walk the talk. Word power is world power.” Siddaramaiah responded later using similar phrasing to assert that the mandate belongs to the government for a full term, stressing he intends to complete five years in office.Shivakumar said his post was being read in a political context, but insisted the message was broader. He added, “That is what I am telling. Whatever we speak in our world that is called Pratikna. That is the word our tongue. That is. I said world power is world power. Wherever in the world. Whatever you speak is very much important. Whatever you also tell in your media also tell. Your anchor also speak. Whether your reporter speak, that is important. That is the power.”The clarification came amid intensifying discussions over leadership transition in Karnataka after the Congress government completed two and a half years in office, a point at which Shivakumar’s supporters believe a rotational understanding from 2023 should take effect. While Siddaramaiah has consistently maintained his intent to serve a full five-year term, Shivakumar’s recent remarks and online posts have been interpreted as renewed signalling of his claim to the post. The exchange marked a departure from previous months, where comments had largely come from supporters of both leaders rather than from the two principals themselves. The matter now rests with the Congress high command, as both sides await direction on whether the leadership question will be settled or deferred.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
