. NEW DELHI: The govt on Monday said there was no increase in the retail prices of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG, amid speculation that rates might go up after the results of the assembly elections in four states and a Union Territory were announced.Sujata Sharma, joint secretary in the ministry of petroleum, said there was no proposal before the govt to support oil marketing companies incurring losses due to under-recoveries while keeping the retail prices of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG frozen.Replying to a query during a press briefing on West Asia developments, Sharma said the govt was trying to protect retail consumers despite high volatility in global crude prices. She said there was no increase in the retail prices of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG, even though supplies were disrupted due to the war in West Asia, and only the rates of bulk or industrial diesel and commercial LPG – used by hotels and restaurants – had been increased. NEW DELHI: “Counting will begin in the morning of May 4. Ballot box will open at 8 am, first round will be over at 9 and second round at 10. Counting will be over at 1 pm and it will be ta ta, good-bye to didi.” Thus spoke Union home minister Amit Shah at one of his rallies in West Bengal on Apr 22, a day before the first phase of polling. As BJP stormed to power in the state, dismantling CM Mamata Banerjee’s stronghold for the past 15 years, Shah’s bold prophecy went viral and so did another assertion that his party will be governing ‘Anga, Banga and Kalinga,’ a cultural reference to Bihar, Bengal and Odisha, after the results were announced on Monday.Election Results 2026Vijay’s TVK party emerges as formidable force in Tamil Nadu; all you need to know about its journeyWest Bengal election results: Mamata lags behind Suvendu Adhikari after 2nd round in BhabanipurTVK pushes DMK, AIADMK to margins; BJP may oust Mamata in Bengal, retain AssamAlso Read |’Immoral, illegal’: Mamata Banerjee alleges BJP ‘looted’ more than 100 seats; vows to ‘bounce back’The last time one party got to govern the three largest eastern states was Congress in the 70s before it lost Bengal to CPM in the first post-Emergency polls and where it gradually unraveled-a fate that befell the party in other two states as well but across a longer stretch of time.Confident poll claims come naturally to politicians as they rally their supporters and galvanise their cadres in pursuit of victory but the assertion of Shah, the hard-headed election strategist, deft organisation builder and untiring campaigner rolled into one, was no wild shot.He began rebuilding BJP’s ground campaign against TMC just after he took over as the BJP chief. The resolve never waned, not after he left the organisation for govt despite the disappointment in 2021 and below-par performance in Lok Sabha elections when its tally fell from 18 to 12.During informal conversations, he would often say that Bengal, the birthplace of the founder of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, as BJP was known in its original incarnation, was just as important for him as Uttar Pradesh which he won for the party in 2017. The disappointments only seemed to give more steel to Shah’s determination, to keep trying and improvising his play. This time he stationed himself for 15 days in the hotly contested state and held over 50 public programmes, including 30 rallies and 12 roadshows, addressing press conferences to shape the party’s narrative built on Hindu consolidation against Mamata’ alleged appeasement of Muslims and BJP’s welfare promises, including stipend to women and unemployed youths, to counter her govt’s freebies. Also Read | West Bengal election results 2026: BJP sweeps Mamata’s citadel – who’s in CM race?Union minister and West Bengal poll-in charge Bhupender Yadav and BJP secretary Sunil Bansal, a former RSS functionary who has been handling the party’s organisational affairs in the state since 2022, were key central figures on the ground, giving Shah feedback and being instrumental in executing the campaign.Follow the latest election results 2026, live updates, winner lists, constituency-wise results, party-wise trends and full coverage for Tamil Nadu election results, West Bengal election results, Kerala election results, Assam election results and Puducherry election results results on Times of India.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosIndia Rejects Nepal’s Objection To Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Route Via Lipulekh PassNepal Objects To India-China Plan To Conduct Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via LipulekhIndia-Linked LPG Tanker MT Sarv Shakti Heads To Visakhapatnam After Crossing HormuzPassenger Opens Emergency Exit Door On Air Arabia Flight While Taxiing At Chennai Airport, ArrestedAhead Of Counting, Gunmen Open Fire At BJP Leader’s House In Bengal’s Noapara‘I Am Also A Victim’: Vinesh Phogat Identifies As Complainant In Brij Bhushan Sexual Harassment CaseBJP MP Sandeep Pathak Claims ‘No Information’ On FIRs, Alleges Misuse Of State Machinery In PunjabIndian Startup Launches Mission Drishti, World’s First OptoSAR Satellite, Aboard SpaceX Falcon 9Diljit Dosanjh Confronts Khalistan Supporters at Calgary Concert, Explains KBC AppearanceDelhi Approves ₹48,000 Crore Metro Expansion Plan To Connect Outer Regions With City Core123PhotostoriesFrom Tomatoes to Beetroot: 7 red foods that protect our heart every dayKhatron Ke Khiladi 15 confirmed contestants list: Gaurav Khanna, Rubina Dilaik, Orry join Rohit Shetty showApple vs. Banana: Which has more nutrition and should be consumed daily and whySleeping late vs waking early: What your body prefers, the answer might surprise youKim Kardashian to Katy Perry: Worst Met Gala dresses ever that sparked major criticismWhy homemade khasta kachori becomes soft after a few hours: 4 halwai-approved smart tips to make them perfect at homeStruggling with a small home? Over the course of ten days, this liquid concrete filled a complex network that reached 26 feet deep. After excavation, it revealed a massive ‘subterranean structure’…

Titans tumble: The defeats may bring the allies closer NEW DELHI: As BJP appeared to get a lock on a state that sends 42 MPs to Lok Sabha, Mandate 2026 confronted INDIA bloc with a question about how to take on a rival with an ever-expanding footprint in the next LS elections. The results in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, Assam and Puducherry have virtually seen the decimation of the opposition alliance, with two of its stalwarts – DMK and TMC – who have blocked BJP on key turfs biting the dust. With the arithmetic of 18th Lok Sabha set to remain the same, DMK and TMC may be nudged to tighten their clinch with the bloc, if only to be seen as unequivocal in their political line with an eye on future revival. This despite Congress drifting towards DMK’s nemesis TVK in Chennai. Election Results 2026Vijay’s TVK party emerges as formidable force in Tamil Nadu; all you need to know about its journeyWest Bengal election results: Mamata lags behind Suvendu Adhikari after 2nd round in BhabanipurTVK pushes DMK, AIADMK to margins; BJP may oust Mamata in Bengal, retain AssamEven TMC, which has often been a spoiler for unity, may be nudged to close ranks with INDIA.Also read| Assembly election results 2026: Top 10 winners and losersThe tricky dance was evident when Rahul Gandhi posted on X that he had spoken to Mamata Banerjee and M K Stalin about their defeats, and congratulated Vijay on his victory. Rahul also lauded the TN mandate, calling it reflective of “the rising voice of youth”.A schism had opened up between Congress and other regional parties – JMM, RJD, SP, AAP which lined up behind Mamata and Stalin, while Rahul and Congress played truant. With DMK and TMC forecast to win their states, Congress was likely to face the blowback and even some ganging up within the grouping. But, as its spokespersons asserted through Monday, Congress was prescient in its demand that TMC and DMK accommodate the party to take on rivals. The pet barbs of TMC that Congress failed to stop BJP in the heartland is set to be a thing of the past. And a weakened INDIA bloc may have to confront the indispensability of Congress leadership. The immediate future will be about ensuring coherence in the UP alliance where SP is senior partner to Congress. They have to hammer out better understanding than seen in Tamil Nadu. Even in Bengal, early overtures by Congress and some opposition managers for a tie-up to consolidate popular support were rebuffed by Mamata. But the big one – 2029 parliamentary polls – looms as the grand challenge With BJP having expanded its footprint beyond its strongholds, opposition faces an uphill task to make up for the big shortfall that would emerge in Bengal.
