Rahul Gandhi, MK Stalin CHENNAI: “You called Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu a traitor because he had crossed over to BJP from Congress. Now consider this. You called M K Stalin on Tuesday afternoon and said, ‘I am with you’. The next morning, you defected from the alliance and jumped to the side you had contested against. Rahul Gandhi ji, we just want to know what you would like to be described as?” said a senior DMK MP, reflecting the anger in the Dravidian outfit’s ranks over Congress’ dramatic switch to Tamil star Vijay after his TVK emerged as the single largest party at the cost of DMK and AIADMK. “It is opportunistic to say the least and, also, politically immoral,” said the DMK functionary who has held a ministerial position at the Centre and is supposed to reflect Stalin’s views. “We did not expect this from Rahul after we spared a Rajya Sabha berth for Congress and gave them more seats than what they should have got on the basis of their strength on the ground. They contested 28 but won only five, and that too only because of the groundwork we did for them.” Talking to TOI from Chennai, he dismissed Congress’ explanation that they needed to go with Vijay since he has got the mandate. “This is whitewashing brazen opportunism. How would they have reacted if we had joined hands with BJP at the Centre citing Congress’ successive defeats?” The former Union minister said it was DMK which, among all INDIA bloc partners, consistently stood by Congress even when Rahul’s actions would generate unease among Congress’ members. “In Lok Sabha, they would like to move into the well of the House over different issues, and their own MPs would resist doing that. But we always did as requested, undeterred by the govt’s annoyance with our tactics. Not that we agreed with each decision of theirs. But we went along because we were in an alliance,” he said. “Alliances are run based on mutual trust. Tell me, who among the allies will trust Rahul now? Will they ever be sure that he will not junk them if he finds that a profitable thing to do?” “It is because of this type of action of Rahul that he keeps losing polls. He tore off the decision of the Manmohan Singh cabinet, and it continues to haunt him,” said the DMK functionary, who also said Congress has a history of betraying DMK. “They twice dismissed Karunanidhi govts. They also brought down the United Front govt in 1996, accusing us of complicity in the unfortunate assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. That it was a false charge was established when they came back to us in 2004 and have not since mentioned it.”End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosGovernor RN Ravi Dissolves West Bengal Assembly After Mamata Banerjee Refuses To ResignSatadru Dutta Accuses TMC’s Aroop Biswas Of Sabotaging Lionel Messi Kolkata EventWill Vijay Fight In Court For CM Post? | India Destroyed 13 Pakistani Aircraft | Headlines @9’Whatever Requires To Be Done’: Indian Air Force On Recent Missile Tests By Pakistan And China’Pending For Over 5 Yrs…’: India Reacts To Bangladesh’s ‘Pushback’ Remark After BJP’s Bengal Win’It Was Abhishek Banerjee’: BJP Blames TMC Leaders After Suvendu Adhikari’s Close Aide Shot Dead’No Terror Sanctuary Is Safe’: Indian Army Warns Pakistan On Op Sindoor Anniversary’Killed Him Because I Defeated Mamata In Bhabanipur’: Suvendu Adhikari On PA Chandranath’s Killing’Aap Haare Nahi Hain’: Akhilesh Yadav Tells Mamata Banerjee In Kolkata After TMC’s Bengal RoutIn Punjab Money Laundering Case Cash Bags Hurled From Ninth Floor During Raids123PhotostoriesRashtrapati Bhavan treated the Vietnamese President with Punjabi and Haryanvi meal: This is what was served on the menuHow to make Gujarati Kadhi for summer dinner at homeHappy Birthday Sai Pallavi: ‘Amaran’, ‘Premam’, ‘Fidaa’ – Films of the natural star to binge-watch on OTTThings you are not allowed to do in your garden in the USSimple kitchen habits that may attract more lizards indoorsMet Gala 2026: Weirdest red carpet looks that stole the spotlight this year5 beautiful scented plants to add to your garden todayStrengths of being an introvert: 5 unique traits of people who prefer to be alone over socialisingTaking supplements every day? Chandranath Rath’s mother Hasirani, 65, mourns his death BARASAT/DOHARIYA: Bengal police are banking on the testimony of a man identified as Mintu to reconstruct final moments of BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari’s aide Chandranath Rath, who was shot dead near his home in Madhyamgram on Kolkata’s northeastern edge, investigators said Thursday. Rath was returning from Kolkata late on Wednesday when gunmen intercepted his SUV near Dohariya on Jessore Road, close to Kolkata airport in North 24 Parganas district. Witnesses alleged a hatchback blocked the Scorpio before shooters on a bike opened fire at point-blank range. Mintu, believed to be travelling in the SUV, escaped unhurt after ducking between seats. Driver Buddhadeb Bera suffered multiple bullet wounds. “He (Mintu) looked visibly shaken and frightened. I had to tell him we were locals before he rolled down the windows,” said Sushanta Sarkar, among the first people to reach the spot. Sarkar, a trader from Dehoriya Methopara and a BJP worker, said he heard what sounded like crackers while feeding stray. “I thought somebody was celebrating BJP’s win or an IPL moment. Then someone came running and said two people had been shot.” “As I reached closer, I heard groans from inside the SUV. The driver would not open windows. I assured him I was there to help,” he said. “When windows finally opened, there was blood everywhere. Rath was slouched in the front seat and breathing at long intervals,” Sarkar said. He claimed Mintu repeatedly cried out, “Sir, what happened? Why did they fire?” Investigators from the police SIT and Barasat police declined comment on Mintu’s whereabouts. The state intelligence branch, part of the probe team, has been tasked with recording his statement. Doctors at Apollo Multispecialty Hospital removed three bullets from Bera’s shoulder, chest and abdomen during a six-hour surgery after he was shifted from a hospital in Madhyamgram. “He is on ventilation support. The next 72 hours are extremely crucial,” a hospital source said. A CID officer said Bera’s condition meant police may not question him for days. “Hence, Mintu will be our main witness,” the officer said.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosGovernor RN Ravi Dissolves West Bengal Assembly After Mamata Banerjee Refuses To ResignSatadru Dutta Accuses TMC’s Aroop Biswas Of Sabotaging Lionel Messi Kolkata EventWill Vijay Fight In Court For CM Post? Puducherry/Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami visited the resort in Puducherry where the party’s MLAs are staying and held discussions with them amidst uncertainty over govt formation in Tamil Nadu.More than 30 AIADMK MLAs, who began arriving at the resort from Wednesday night, attended the meeting. They also formally elected Palaniswami as the AIADMK legislature party leader, giving him authority to take decisions on the party’s next political steps. Initially there was speculation that Palaniswami would be heading to Lok Bhavan to meet the governor in the evening. But he drove to Puducherry and met the MLAs. The consultative meeting, which commenced at 7.30pm, concluded by 8.10pm.Party sources said the discussions centred on the evolving political situation in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the fractured poll verdict. Palaniswami briefed the MLAs on the party’s next steps to prevent poaching and maintain a united front. AIADMK sources indicate that a strict order has been issued to the MLAs not to leave the resort. Party sources said rooms have been booked for the next seven days, signalling that the AIADMK was prepared for a prolonged negotiation. “Our leader had gone to Puducherry to hold discussions with the MLAs about the prevailing situation and what the options are ahead of us. We are hoping that his efforts will pay off,” said an AIADMK leader, preferring anonymity. AIADMK leaders said the move was aimed at keeping the party together at a time when there were speculations that the party MLAs could be poached since TVK does not have majority to form the govt. The meeting also comes in the wake of reports that DMK and AIADMK were in talks for a tie-up. . NEW DELHI: Govt on Thursday rejected a report by Canada’s intelligence agency that claimed foreign interference by India, saying India was a democracy that adhered to international norms and respected the sovereignty of other nations. The MEA said in response to media queries that India’s position on this issue had been clear and consistent and it categorically rejected such baseless imputations. “It is not our policy to interfere in issues of other countries. We believe that any concerns of this nature should be addressed through established mechanisms, rather than through public or politicised narratives,” spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. The report, however, had acknowledged the threat to Canada from Khalistani extremism, something that India has repeatedly warned Ottawa about. The official said India has consistently spoken out about concerns regarding the use of Canadian territory as a safe haven by extremist and separatist elements. “The CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) assessment acknowledges the presence of supporters of the Khalistan separatist movement in Canada and notes that Canada-based Khalistani extremist groups continue to pose a national security threat not only to India but also to Canada,” Jaiswal said. “India has repeatedly urged the Canadian govt to take effective action against antiIndia extremist elements operating from its soil,” Jaiswal added.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosGovernor RN Ravi Dissolves West Bengal Assembly After Mamata Banerjee Refuses To ResignSatadru Dutta Accuses TMC’s Aroop Biswas Of Sabotaging Lionel Messi Kolkata EventWill Vijay Fight In Court For CM Post? | India Destroyed 13 Pakistani Aircraft | Headlines @9’Whatever Requires To Be Done’: Indian Air Force On Recent Missile Tests By Pakistan And China’Pending For Over 5 Yrs…’: India Reacts To Bangladesh’s ‘Pushback’ Remark After BJP’s Bengal Win’It Was Abhishek Banerjee’: BJP Blames TMC Leaders After Suvendu Adhikari’s Close Aide Shot Dead’No Terror Sanctuary Is Safe’: Indian Army Warns Pakistan On Op Sindoor Anniversary’Killed Him Because I Defeated Mamata In Bhabanipur’: Suvendu Adhikari On PA Chandranath’s Killing’Aap Haare Nahi Hain’: Akhilesh Yadav Tells Mamata Banerjee In Kolkata After TMC’s Bengal RoutIn Punjab Money Laundering Case Cash Bags Hurled From Ninth Floor During Raids123PhotostoriesMorning affirmation at 5 AM: A quiet reset before the chaos beginsRashtrapati Bhavan treated the Vietnamese President with Punjabi and Haryanvi meal: This is what was served on the menuHow to make Gujarati Kadhi for summer dinner at homeHappy Birthday Sai Pallavi: ‘Amaran’, ‘Premam’, ‘Fidaa’ – Films of the natural star to binge-watch on OTTThings you are not allowed to do in your garden in the USSimple kitchen habits that may attract more lizards indoorsMet Gala 2026: Weirdest red carpet looks that stole the spotlight this year5 beautiful scented plants to add to your garden todayStrengths of being an introvert: 5 unique traits of people who prefer to be alone over socialisingTaking supplements every day?
