File photo NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Friday requested former SC judge Justice Kurian Joseph to secure a permanent truce between IAS officer Rohini Sindhuri and IPS officer Roopa Moudgil, both of Karnataka cadre, who have been engaged in a bitter cross-defamation litigation after an ugly public spat three years ago.Observing that the officers were “destroying their own careers” through litigation, a bench of Justices Satish Chandra Sharma and Sanjeev Sachdeva told counsel for the warring civil servants to explore a mediated resolution to their quarrel. Lawyers for both sides accepted the court’s suggestion.Asking them to appear before Justice Joseph in July, the bench stayed proceedings before trial courts in the cross-defamation suits filed by the two officers against each other. In Feb 2023, Roopa had posted a series of social media posts against Rohini, including disproportionate assets allegations. Rohini successfully moved court to restrain Roopa from making defamatory remarks.Roopa’s challenge to the proceedings was rejected by Karnataka HC. On appeal, the SC had asked the two parties to resolve their differences. Rohini’s plea for quashing these proceedings was dismissed by the HC and she filed an appeal in the SC, which on Friday appointed Justice Joseph as the mediator.Get the latest India news and live updates. Supreme Court NEW DELHI: Inserting a new scrutiny dimension to child custody legal battles between estranged parents, Supreme Court has ruled that courts must first evaluate mental and psychological conditions of each parent and assess their abilities to deal with growing needs of a child before deciding such disputes. In application of the well-settled principle to serve “the best interest of the child’, courts, prior to awarding custody rights of a child, mandatorily interact with the child to understand with which parent his or her compatibility, comfort and cohesiveness is better.Inserting “parents’ assessment principle” to bitterly fought court battles between estranged couples, a bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and N Kotiswar Singh Thursday said courts must not focus solely on the psychological test of a child but also that of the parents.Writing the judgment, Justice N Kotiswar Singh said, “While it is important to make an assessment as to how a child will respond to either of the parents, it is equally important to ascertain mental and psychological conditions of the parents themselves to deal with the needs of the growing child.”SC said the assessment of the parents’ psychological conditions must be conducted prior to a similar assessment of the child to understand compatibility with each of the parents.SC referred to a 2025 study by Nimhans, Bengaluru, covering issues such as parent-child relationship and interaction, parental dynamics, parental mental health issues, malicious acts by parents, adjustment to changes in child’s life, issues in school context and child mental health issues.Get the latest India news and live updates. Uddhav Thackeray NEW DELHI: With the rebel TMC faction claiming to have secured the signatures of 19 Lok Sabha MPs pledging support to BJP-led NDA govt , the governing alliance is looking to further boost its numbers to get closer to the two-third mark in Lok Sabha by drawing support from members of more parties in the opposition camp to boost its legislative agenda, which had suffered a setback in Parliament’s last session due to its lack of a special majority needed to ratify constitution amendments.Sources within NDA suggest one of the parties that may see desertion from its ranks is Sena UBT, a possibility being talked about since the alliance swept the assembly polls in Maharashtra but has gained traction now. The Uddhav Thackeray-led party has nine MPs in Lok Sabha and six of them will have to merge with another party — Shiv Sena led by deputy CM Eknath Shinde seen as the most probable option — to avoid losing membership under the anti-defection law. With his grassroots network and accessibility, Shinde has been successful in supplanting the rival faction in much of the state and winning over most of its satraps, with the influence of Uddhav largely confined to Mumbai.Much of the political churn linked to BJP’s quest to boost its alliance numbers in Parliament, sources added, will also depend on the feasibility of its overall plan to cross the two-third figure of 360 in the current Lok Sabha with 540 MPs and three vacancies.Get the latest India news and live updates.
