NEW DELHI: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday played down the tussle between Siddharamaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar over the chief ministerial post, saying that the party will resolve the “confusion as soon as possible.”This comes a day after Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara’s said that everyone in the ruling Congress party will welcome, if Kharge becomes the chief minister.While taking to reporters, Kharge rubbished the speculations and said that Sonia Gandhi takes decisions regarding him.”You (media), he (Parameshwara) and people at the top say that it is better if I become (the chief minister). But, more than fate, as per my ideology and as per my service to the party so far, Sonia Gandhi takes decisions regarding me,” he said.”But, that question does not arise now. There is already a chief minister here. If Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and I, together, have to take any decision in the direction of a change, it will take some time. Let’s wait and see,” he added.Supporters of deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar have been insisting on his on his elevation in lines with a rumoured power-sharing agreement with CM Siddaramaiah when the party won the 2023 assembly polls.Amid speculations about the leadership change in Karnataka, Parameshwara said on Wednesday that everyone in the ruling Congress party will welcome, if Kharge, a senior politician with a lot of experience, becomes the chief minister.A power struggle between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar intensified as soon as the Congress government in Karnataka completed its halfway mark in November last year. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday reserved its order on Congress leader Pawan Khera’s anticipatory bail plea, with Khera telling the court it was “not necessary to humiliate him by arrest” in the passport row case linked to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.During the hearing, Khera told the court that the allegations against him were a matter of trial. He further said, “Some sections invoked against me are bailable, others don’t require arrest.”Khera also submitted that if he does not get anticipatory bail in the case registered against him in Assam, “then purpose of pre-arrest bail is gone.”A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar reserved its verdict after hearing arguments from both sides.Appearing for Khera, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said the case did not warrant custodial interrogation and reiterated that arrest was unnecessary.Opposing the plea, solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing the Assam government, told the court that Khera had shown “fake” and “doctored” copies of passports belonging to the chief minister’s wife. He also alleged that Khera had been absconding and disseminating videos, while maintaining that claims of multiple citizenship were false.The case stems from allegations made by Khera regarding Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, following which criminal complaints were filed against him at the Guwahati crime branch under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.Khera has challenged an April 24 order of the Gauhati High Court, which denied him anticipatory bail.Earlier, the Telangana high court had granted him a seven-day transit anticipatory bail. NEW DELHI: The Patiala House court on Thursday granted bail to I-PAC director and co-founder Vinesh Chandela in a money laundering case, following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate.The court’s decision came after the ED filed its response to Chandela’s bail plea and did not oppose his release. During the previous hearing, the court had issued a notice to the agency seeking its stand on the application.Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, appearing for Chandela, said, “We filed a regular bail application a few days ago, and the ED was supposed to file a reply. Yesterday, they filed their reply and raised no objection to the grant of bail, primarily on the grounds that he has cooperated with the investigating agency and has provided voluntary and purposeful cooperation. That is the language used by them. He has also provided the information and other data required during the investigation. NEW DELHI: India remains among the countries bearing the highest burden of hepatitis-related deaths even as global efforts show progress, according to the WHO’s Global Hepatitis Report 2026, which warns that the world is off track to meet the 2030 elimination targets.The report flags viral hepatitis as a major public health threat, with over 1.3 million deaths globally in 2024—largely from hepatitis B and C, which together account for more than 95% of hepatitis-related deaths.Hepatitis B and C are viral infections that affect the liver and can remain silent for years before leading to cirrhosis and cancer.India figures prominently in the global burden. It is among ten countries that together account for nearly 69% of hepatitis B-related deaths worldwide and 58% of global hepatitis C deaths. India also has one of the largest hepatitis C burdens, ranking second after Pakistan; along with China, the three countries account for about 39% of global cases.According to WHO and ICMR estimates, India falls in the intermediate hepatitis B burden category, with a prevalence of around 2–4%, translating to nearly 40 million people living with chronic infection.“Despite vaccines and simple, affordable treatment, India continues to carry a high hepatitis burden due to gaps in vaccination coverage, unsafe exposures like needle sharing and razor reuse, and missed opportunities in screening — especially during pregnancy. The bigger problem is under-diagnosis, not treatment access. While prevalence has dropped sharply and free hepatitis C treatment has expanded, awareness, routine screening, and long-term treatment compliance remain weak. At the current pace, eliminating hepatitis C by 2030 looks unlikely, though it is achievable in the foreseeable future,” said Dr. Piyush Ranjan, Vice-chairperson, Institute of liver gastroenterology & pancreatico biliary science, Sir Gangaram Hospital.While there has been progress, it remains uneven. Globally, new hepatitis B infections have fallen by 32% since 2015 and hepatitis C deaths by 12%, but hepatitis B deaths have risen by 17%, pointing to gaps in diagnosis and treatment.An estimated 240 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B and 47 million with hepatitis C in 2024, yet treatment access remains limited—fewer than 5% of hepatitis B patients are on therapy and only about 20% of eligible hepatitis C patients have been treated.The report highlights that most hepatitis B infections occur in early childhood, often through mother-to-child transmission, while hepatitis C continues to spread through unsafe injections and blood exposure.Despite falling infection rates, progress is too slow to meet the 2030 target of sharply reducing new infections and deaths.
