Defence ministers of India and Russia are set to discuss future defense acquisitions, including the S-500 missile system, during their annual summit. The meeting will also review progress on ongoing cooperation, with India seeking additional S-400 squadrons and addressing delayed deliveries of a previous order. The drop was primarily because no new financial military assistance for Ukraine was approved during the year. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh advocates for peace at SCO meeting Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defence ministers’ meeting in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek on Tuesday, defence minister Rajnath Singh said “Operation Sindoor had demonstrated India’s firm resolve that terror epicentres will be meted out justifiable punishment”. His warning to Pakistan came before its defence minister Khawaja Asif at the meeting. Rajnath stressed the need for a “united front to tackle evils of terrorism, separatism and extremism by dismantling safe havens and rejecting any political exceptions”. He called on member-states to eliminate double standards in the global fight against terror. “We must not lose sight of state-sponsored cross-border terror which attacks the very sovereignty of a nation state.” Recalling Pahalgam, he said, “No grievance, real or supposed, can become an excuse for terror and humanitarian loss”. On the global situation, he said, “The real crisis today is not of a non-existent order but a tendency to question the established rules-based world order. Representative Image Less than a week after Kedarnath shrine opened for Char Dham yatra, police de- ployed for crowd management are grappling with a different set of challenges — visitors lighting crackers for birthday events in the temple zone, devotees waving political party flags in front of the shrine, and vloggers enter- ing risky glacier stretches for reels. Police have registered multiple FIRs, while officers said social media monitoring had been tightened. One recent case involved bursting of crack- ers near Kedarnath temple during a birthday celebration, after which cops registered an FIR against an unidentified person linked to Insta- gram handle ‘Sumit-Ke-Blog’. The case was registered under BNS Sec 353(3), dealing with public mischief within a place of worship. In other incidents, videos showed visitors waving political flags near the shrine, while some men claiming to be vloggers crossed boundary ropes and ventured into restricted glacier areas to shoot content before police stopped them and let them off with a warning. Backlash from residents has been sharp, with many seeing the conduct as a breach of the re- ligious and environmental sensitivity of the pilgrimage. “The things happening this time are unprecedented. People are breaching the sanctity of such a pious place,” Ashish Gairo- la, a resident of Triyuginarayan, told TOI. Mayaram Goswami, 65, who runs a restaurant-cum-lodge at Gaurikund, said he had never seen such conduct during the yatra earlier. “More people are coming for social media likes and comments rather than to pay respects to Lord Kedarnath,” he added. Representative Image Less than a week after Kedarnath shrine opened for Char Dham yatra, police de- ployed for crowd management are grappling with a different set of challenges — visitors lighting crackers for birthday events in the temple zone, devotees waving political party flags in front of the shrine, and vloggers enter- ing risky glacier stretches for reels. Police have registered multiple FIRs, while officers said social media monitoring had been tightened. One recent case involved bursting of crack- ers near Kedarnath temple during a birthday celebration, after which cops registered an FIR against an unidentified person linked to Insta- gram handle ‘Sumit-Ke-Blog’. The case was registered under BNS Sec 353(3), dealing with public mischief within a place of worship. In other incidents, videos showed visitors waving political flags near the shrine, while some men claiming to be vloggers crossed boundary ropes and ventured into restricted glacier areas to shoot content before police stopped them and let them off with a warning. Backlash from residents has been sharp, with many seeing the conduct as a breach of the re- ligious and environmental sensitivity of the pilgrimage. “The things happening this time are unprecedented. People are breaching the sanctity of such a pious place,” Ashish Gairo- la, a resident of Triyuginarayan, told TOI. Mayaram Goswami, 65, who runs a restaurant-cum-lodge at Gaurikund, said he had never seen such conduct during the yatra earlier. “More people are coming for social media likes and comments rather than to pay respects to Lord Kedarnath,” he added. Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan New Delhi: Education ministry ordered corrective measures to improve campus governance and student well-being at NIT Kurukshetra following a high-level review Tuesday, even as senior professor Brahmjit Singh was appointed officiating director as director B V Ramana Reddy’s resignation was accepted.The developments come against the backdrop of four student suicides reported on campus in the past two months, including three in April. The death of a 20-year-old second-year student on April 16 triggered protests, with students alleging negligence and demanding a probe. Following the unrest, authorities suspended academic activities and asked students to vacate hostels, though select batches have been asked to return from May 9.The review, chaired by Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, examined the academic environment, campus life and hostel management, flagging urgent steps to strengthen student engagement, faculty accountability and overall institutional culture. Immediate measures include hostel upgrades, structured faculty training on mentoring and student well-being, and SOPs to institutionalise student engagement.In a related move, the institute has suspended joint registrar Gyana Ranjan Samantaray after a central team visited the campus.
