AI image LONDON: London morgue workers were exposed to deadly gases after opening the coffins of British victims of the AI171 crash, which were repatriated to the UK from India, a UK coroner has warned.A number of bodies of the 53 British victims of the June 12 plane crash, which killed 241 people, were repatriated to Westminster Public Mortuary. Their remains were wrapped and saturated in a “dangerously high” 40% concentration of formalin as a preservative and returned in lined coffins. On opening the coffins, it was apparent that there was a significant chemical hazard from the formalin to all users of the mortuary, Inner West London senior coroner Prof Fiona Wilcox revealed in a report sent to UK housing secretary Steve Reed and health secretary Wes Streeting.In addition to formalin, “carbon monoxide and cyanide were also detected in the mortuary at dangerous levels, following opening of the coffins and unwrapping of the bodies of the deceased persons who had been repatriated”, Wilcox wrote in a “Prevention of Future Deaths” report. It calls on ministers to take action to prevent future deaths among mortuary staff. They have 56 days to respond.Police trained in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents had to be called, and systems put in place to mitigate the risks, which included the use of environmental monitoring and breathing apparatus. The report said mortuary users appeared unaware of the dangers of high levels of formalin, which is commonly used to preserve human remains when repatriated from abroad, and UK mortuaries were ill-equipped to handle bodies “significantly contaminated with formalin”.“Formalin contains formaldehyde. Sambit Patra (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday accused the Congress of “destroying many great men’s leagacy” after veteran leader Sonia Gandhi alleged the government of vilifying former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.In a press conference, BJP’s national spokesperson Sambit Patra said that many leaders like Shubhash Chandra Bose and Vallabhbhai Patel were marginalised in Congress to preserve Nehru’s legacy. “Congress Destroyed Patel, Bose Legacies” BJP Lambasts Sonia Gandhi Over ‘Defaming Nehru’ Remark “I respectfully tell Sonia Gandhi that to preserve Nehru’s legacy, the Congress Party has destroyed many great men’s legacies, including Vallabhbhai Patel, who was marginalised within the party,” Patra said.Similarly, Subhash Chandra Bose was neglected for many years,” he added.Patra further claimed that the BJP is correcting historical wrongs by giving credit to people who “really” contributed to the independence of this country.“The BJP is trying to rectify history and give due credit to the people who really contributed to the independence of this country and to its various facets,” he said.Taking a swipe at Nehru’s role in Jammu and Kashmir, Patra said, “We clearly say that without Pandit Nehru, there would have been no Kashmir problem.”Countering Sonia Gandhi’s assertion that Nehru was the prime architect of the modern Indian nation-state, he said, “Sonia Gandhi said Nehru was the prime architect of the modern Indian nation-state, but we believe she is wrong on this point. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addresses the gathering during an event regarding infrastructure projects of Border Roads Organisation (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that while the armed forces exercised measured restraint during Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack, they possessed the capability to deliver a far stronger response if required.Rajnath also said that the May offensive showcased the military’s ‘capability’ and ‘discipline’ in neutralising terror threats without triggering escalation.After inaugurating 125 BRO infrastructure projects across the country, the union defence minister highlighted the coordination among security forces, local administrations, and border residents during the operation. “During Operation Sindoor, the coordination we witnessed among our armed forces, the civil administration, and the citizens of the border areas was incredible. I express my gratitude to every citizen of Ladakh as well as the border areas for extending their support to our armed forces,” he said, as quoted by PTI.“This coordination is what defines our identity. It is our mutual bond that gives us the most distinct identity in the world,” he added.Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 against terror facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.“Just a few months ago, we witnessed how, in response to the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, our armed forces executed Operation Sindoor, and the world knows what they did to the terrorists.“Of course, we could have done much more had we wanted, but our forces demonstrated not only valour but also restraint, doing only what was necessary,” Singh said.He stressed that strengthened connectivity in border areas played a crucial role in the success of the operation, enabling timely movement of logistics and sustained operational readiness.“Today, our soldiers stand strong in difficult terrains because they have access to roads, real-time communication systems, satellite support, surveillance networks, and logistics connectivity.” said Rajnath, adding, “Every minute, every second of a soldier deployed on the border is extremely important. Therefore, connectivity should not be viewed merely as limited to networks, optical fibre, drones, and radars, but rather as the backbone of security.”He also added that robust communication networks also allow him to regularly interact with troops across the country. “Communication should not be viewed merely in terms of infrastructure. It is a very broad term. Officials said the trains, arranged at short notice after reviewing traffic conditions in major cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Patna and Howrah, will together make more than 100 trips.They added that efforts are being made to widely publicise the special services, with some railway divisions sharing information at nearby airports to guide stranded travellers. The Rajya Sabha will hold its discussion the next day, to be opened by Union home minister Amit Shah.The commemoration is not merely ceremonial. It arrives amid renewed political sparring over the song’s historical evolution, religious imagery, and the choices made by India’s pre-independence national leadership. What began as a patriotic hymn in a Bengali novel is once again a focal point of fierce political messaging, competing historical narratives, and questions about national identity.This explainer traces the 150-year journey of Vande Mataram—from its birth in Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay’s writing to its role in nationalism, the Congress’s 1937 decision to officially use only its first two stanzas, and its recognition in the Constituent Assembly as having “equal honour and status” with the National Anthem. Why it’s in the news nowThe upcoming debate is part of a special parliamentary focus on the legacy of Vande Mataram. But the political temperature was raised last month, during the commemoration event of 150 years of the national song, when Prime Minister Modi accused the Congress of having “removed important stanzas” from the original song during its 1937 Faizabad session, claiming this decision “sowed the seeds of partition.”According to the Prime Minister, the Congress’s move amounted to breaking the national song into pieces—an act that abandoned its original spirit and undermined unity. He has framed the issue within his broader narrative of ‘Viksit Bharat’, tying cultural heritage to national development. The Congress hit back immediately. Citing The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi (Vol66, p46), the party argued that the 1937 decision was not an act of division, but a sensitive accommodation recommended by a Working Committee that included Mahatama Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Abul Kalam Azad, Sarojini Naidu, and other iconic leaders. The CWC noted that the first two stanzas were already the only widely sung and nationally recognised part, while the remaining contained religious imagery that some citizens objected to.The Congress also emphasised that the decision drew from the advice of Rabindranath Tagore, who had himself sung Vande Mataram at the 1896 Congress session.In its rebuttal, the party accused the prime minister of attacking the legacy of India’s freedom movement while avoiding present-day issues such as unemployment, inequality, and foreign policy challenges.This political exchange has made the upcoming parliamentary debate all the more charged.Origins of Bande Mataram (1870s–1880s)The PIB’s historical account helps clarify the origins of the song. According to Sri Aurobindo’s writing in the English daily Bande Mataram (16 April 1907), Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay composed the song around 1875. It was published more widely when Bankim’s novel Anandamath began serialization in the Bengali magazine Bangadarshan in March–April 1881.Song’s literary context: AnandamathAnandamath is built around a group of ascetic warriors, the Santanas, who dedicate themselves to freeing the motherland from oppression. Their devotion is entirely to Bharat Mata, envisioned not as a religious deity but as a personified motherland.In the temple of the Santanas stand three images of the Mother:The Mother that was – glorious and mightyThe Mother that is – suffering and oppressedThe Mother that will be – restored to strength and gloryFor Aurobindo, the hymn embodied the essence of “the religion of patriotism.”Many later critics, however, would argue that the imagery—particularly in the later stanzas—draws from Hindu goddess symbolism that may not be inclusive of all communities. This was during the peak of the Swadeshi struggle, when the song had become the soundtrack of political awakening.1937 CWC decision: Were the stanzas removed?Yes.By the 1930s, debates around the song’s religious imagery had become politically relevant. India’s nationalist leadership wanted to keep the movement inclusive, and Muslim leaders raised objections to certain stanzas that invoked Hindu goddesses.Did it ‘sow seeds of partition’?No.The CWC’s decision was more inclusive than divisive in nature.The eventual decision to restrict Vande Mataram to its first two stanzas drew directly from this history of selective popular usage. As the Committee noted, only the opening verses — celebrating the land’s beauty and abundance in gentle, inclusive imagery — had organically acquired national significance over the decades. The remaining stanzas were scarcely known, rarely sung, and contained religious allusions and ideological references that many felt were inconsistent with the beliefs of other communities. The CWC explicitly acknowledged the “validity of the objections raised by Muslim friends” to those portions. While emphasising that the song’s modern, unifying role in national life mattered far more than its origins in a historical novel, the committee concluded that only the first two stanzas should be sung at national gatherings. We rushed out of the club only to see that the entire structure was up in flames,” Fatima Shaikh, a tourist from Hyderabad told PTI.She said some tourists, in the confusion, ran to the kitchen area and got trapped, while “many managed to run out of the club.” The fire spread rapidly because the club had temporary construction made up of palm leaves, which caught fire instantly. A devastating fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, Goa, claimed at least 25 lives, including tourists and staff, and injured six. The blaze, possibly ignited by a cylinder blast, spread rapidly through the temporary structure. Police initially confirmed 23 deaths but later revised the toll to 25.A police spokesperson said the deceased included four tourists and 14 staff members, while the identities of seven others are yet to be established. Six injured persons are undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim. In the panic that followed, many rushed downstairs and ended up in the kitchen on the ground floor, where they were trapped along with staff members.State police said the blaze was triggered by a cylinder blast, but some eyewitnesses claimed the fire started on the first floor, where tourists were dancing.Most of those who died were kitchen workers, including three women, Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said. He added that “three to four tourists” were among the victims.”There was a sudden commotion as the flames started erupting. We rushed out of the club only to see that the entire structure was up in flames,” Fatima Shaikh, a tourist from Hyderabad told PTI.She said some tourists, in the confusion, ran to the kitchen area and got trapped, while “many managed to run out of the club.” The fire spread rapidly because the club had temporary construction made up of palm leaves, which caught fire instantly. The venue, located in the backwaters of the Arpora river, had narrow entry and exit routes, making evacuation and rescue difficult. An AI-generated image NEW DELHI: Ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has said that it has not asked lenders to pause financing for renewable energy (RE) projects, amid concerns over excess domestic solar manufacturing capacity.In a statement issued on Sunday, MNRE said it has only shared the current status of domestic solar manufacturing capacity with the department of financial services and major renewable-energy lenders such as Power Finance Corporation, REC and Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency. The intent, it said, is to help institutions take a “calibrated, well-informed” approach while evaluating investments across the solar value chain.It added that India has already met 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, achieving the target five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. The intent, it said, is to help institutions take a “calibrated, well-informed” approach while evaluating investments across the solar value chain.It added that India has already met 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, achieving the target five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. As of October 31, the country’s non-fossil fuel capacity stands at 259 GW, with 31.2 GW added in the current financial year.The ministry emphasised that financing should not remain limited to module manufacturing, but also expand to upstream segments such as cells, ingots, wafers and polysilicon, along with ancillaries like solar glass and aluminium frames.The govt reiterated its commitment to making India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and strengthening its position in the global value chain. India is launching an ambitious revival plan for 28 deserted coal mines, successfully reopening two of them already. Paired with the auction of 133 additional mines, these efforts are set to dramatically enhance coal output, crucial for meeting increased energy needs. Representative image (Photo credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: The work to revive 28 of 32 abandoned coal mines has started, while the remaining four are in the re-tendering stage, Union coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy informed the Lok Sabha recently. According to the minister, production started in two of the revived mines during the 2025-26 financial year. The minister also informed Parliament that 133 coal mines have been auctioned over a period of five years, which are expected to generate annual revenue of Rs 38,710 crore with a capital investment of Rs 41,407 crore and provide employment to 373,199 persons.In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Reddy said Coal India Limited, a public sector undertaking, was implementing the revival of certain legacy and non-operational underground mines through a revenue-sharing model with private partners. This model offers to re-open, salvage, rehabilitate, develop, and operate any suitable discontinued mine through a mine developer and operator for excavation and extraction of coal and delivery. The 28 revived mines have a combined capacity of 39.28 million tonnes per annum. The coal mines that are providing tap water to 100s of villages | I Witness While the capacity of renewable energy sources in India has seen a sharp rise in the past few years, it has yet to meet the scale required to support the ever-growing energy consumption. Coal and lignite together contribute nearly three-fourths of the total electricity generation in India. However, it is projected to fall to 55% by 2030 and 27% by 2047. To meet the estimated electricity demand by the year 2031-32, India would need 283 gigawatts of installed capacity against the current 217.5 GW. The govt will need to set up an additional coal-based capacity of a minimum of 80 GW by 2031-32. Goa nightclub fire (IANS photo) NEW DELHI: A weekend party night in North Goa turned into a tragedy after a massive fire tore through a nightclub in Arpora, killing at least 25 people and injuring many more late Saturday. Eyewitnesses said the blaze followed a “big fire” triggered by a “massive explosion,” in one of Goa’s busiest nightlife belts.Local authorities later confirmed that the club structure itself had no valid permissions. A panchayat official from Arpora said the establishment’s construction “was there without permission,” raising serious questions about regulatory oversight. Avanish from Delhi, who had planned to visit the restaurant, said, “…Actually, we got lucky because our cab driver was late or else we would be here…”A security guard at a nearby restaurant recalled the moment the blast shook the area: “…We heard a massive explosion. We later learned that the fire broke out after a cylinder blast…”Nikhnesh, also from Delhi, said he arrived just as smoke began rising. “As soon as we reached our hostel, we saw plumes of smoke rising… Actually, we were planning to come and party here last night… I think there was DJ party yesterday, I don’t know much about it.”Witnesses reported that between 100 and 150 people were on the dance floor when the fire broke out. In the panic, several people rushed downstairs into the kitchen area, where they were trapped along with staff members. Most of the victims, authorities said, were kitchen workers; among the dead were three women and several tourists.Sanjay Kumar Gupta, a security guard at Birch, said the tragedy unfolded within minutes. “The incident occurred between 11 pm and 12 am. Suddenly, there was a fire… I was at the gate… A DJ, dancer was going to come here, and it was about to get really crowded…”Fatima Shaikh, a tourist from Hyderabad, said the nightclub was packed for the weekend. “There was a sudden commotion as the flames started erupting… We rushed out of the club only to see that the entire structure was up in flames,” she said. Many who fled ran into the kitchen, not knowing it was a dead end. “They (tourists) got trapped there along with other staff… Many managed to run out of the club,” she added.The fire spread rapidly, aided by temporary décor made of palm leaves. Access for fire tenders was severely hindered: the club sits along the Arpora backwaters, reachable only through narrow lanes. Tankers had to be parked almost 400 metres away, slowing the response. A senior Fire and Emergency Services officer said the lack of access “made controlling the blaze a challenging task.” Most deaths occurred due to suffocation.Chief minister Pramod Sawant, who visited the site, said the club had not complied with fire safety norms. He announced an inquiry and assured strict action. “The nightclub had not followed the fire safety norms,” he said, adding that both the management and officials who allowed it to run would face consequences.Arpora-Nagoa panchayat sarpanch Roshan Redkar said the club was operated by Saurav Luthra, who was embroiled in a dispute with his partner. “We had inspected the premises and found that they did not have the permission to construct the club,” he said. A demolition notice had been issued earlier, but officials from the directorate of panchayats granted a stay.“The fire incident that happened was unfortunate… Now, we have to be more vigilant,” Redkar added.Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, who also reached the site, said all nightclubs in the area will face a fire safety audit starting Monday. A devastating fire ripped through a North Goa nightclub, claiming at least 25 lives and injuring many more. The blaze, reportedly triggered by an explosion, occurred in an establishment operating without valid permissions. Fire safety norms were not followed, and access for emergency services was severely hampered, leading to a tragic loss of life. Eyewitnesses said the blaze followed a “big fire” triggered by a “massive explosion,” in one of Goa’s busiest nightlife belts.Local authorities later confirmed that the club structure itself had no valid permissions. A panchayat official from Arpora said the establishment’s construction “was there without permission,” raising serious questions about regulatory oversight. Avanish from Delhi, who had planned to visit the restaurant, said, “…Actually, we got lucky because our cab driver was late or else we would be here…”A security guard at a nearby restaurant recalled the moment the blast shook the area: “…We heard a massive explosion. We later learned that the fire broke out after a cylinder blast…”Nikhnesh, also from Delhi, said he arrived just as smoke began rising. “As soon as we reached our hostel, we saw plumes of smoke rising… Actually, we were planning to come and party here last night… I think there was DJ party yesterday, I don’t know much about it.”Witnesses reported that between 100 and 150 people were on the dance floor when the fire broke out. In the panic, several people rushed downstairs into the kitchen area, where they were trapped along with staff members. Most of the victims, authorities said, were kitchen workers; among the dead were three women and several tourists.Sanjay Kumar Gupta, a security guard at Birch, said the tragedy unfolded within minutes. “The incident occurred between 11 pm and 12 am. Suddenly, there was a fire… I was at the gate… A DJ, dancer was going to come here, and it was about to get really crowded…”Fatima Shaikh, a tourist from Hyderabad, said the nightclub was packed for the weekend. “There was a sudden commotion as the flames started erupting… We rushed out of the club only to see that the entire structure was up in flames,” she said. Many who fled ran into the kitchen, not knowing it was a dead end. “They (tourists) got trapped there along with other staff… Many managed to run out of the club,” she added.The fire spread rapidly, aided by temporary décor made of palm leaves. Access for fire tenders was severely hindered: the club sits along the Arpora backwaters, reachable only through narrow lanes. Tankers had to be parked almost 400 metres away, slowing the response. A senior Fire and Emergency Services officer said the lack of access “made controlling the blaze a challenging task.” Most deaths occurred due to suffocation.Chief minister Pramod Sawant, who visited the site, said the club had not complied with fire safety norms. He announced an inquiry and assured strict action. “The nightclub had not followed the fire safety norms,” he said, adding that both the management and officials who allowed it to run would face consequences.Arpora-Nagoa panchayat sarpanch Roshan Redkar said the club was operated by Saurav Luthra, who was embroiled in a dispute with his partner. “We had inspected the premises and found that they did not have the permission to construct the club,” he said. A demolition notice had been issued earlier, but officials from the directorate of panchayats granted a stay.“The fire incident that happened was unfortunate… Now, we have to be more vigilant,” Redkar added.Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, who also reached the site, said all nightclubs in the area will face a fire safety audit starting Monday. The scramble has become emblematic of the sudden rush for charter aircraft in India as disruptions at the country’s largest airline ripple through the peak travel and wedding season.“Typical movements included Delhi-Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, all popular wedding destinations, apart from Hyderabad and Chennai,” said Gautam Sahni of Noida-based Subha Aviation, which specialises in airline charters. He described the spike as “unprecedented”, driven entirely by destination wedding groups and smaller groups of 50-180 whose scheduled flights were cancelled at short notice: “Look for 50-seater airline jets and you will find that nothing is available in the market today because, ultimately, you have to take aircraft away from a scheduled carrier’s flow.” Aviation Meltdown Escalates As IndiGo Cancels 400 Flights And Government Enforces Fare Controls “Every airline does charters, but none can support this kind of sudden demand, especially at a time their scheduled flights are flying packed because of IndiGo disruptions,” he said.In one instance, he added, an eight-seater aircraft had to be flown empty from Delhi to Kolkata to pick up a wedding party after their airline connection broke down.Mandar Bharde, of Mumbai-based MAB Aviation, said past four days had brought a flood of enquiries, led largely by destination weddings and year-end travel. “Every day we are getting requests from destination wedding hosts in Jaipur and Udaipur. Dec is peak vacation season and all charter flights are full,” he said. Smaller aircraft such as the 7-seater King Air B200 on the Delhi-Vadodara sector cost Rs 11 lakh for a round trip. NEW DELHI: Taking note of the days-long ordeal faced by passengers due to mass cancellation of IndiGo flights, the parliamentary panel on transport, tourism and civil aviation will soon summon all airlines and other stakeholders, including sector regulator DGCA and officials from aviation ministry. NEW DELHI: Taking note of the days-long ordeal faced by passengers due to mass cancellation of IndiGo flights, the parliamentary panel on transport, tourism and civil aviation will soon summon all airlines and other stakeholders, including sector regulator DGCA and officials from aviation ministry. The panel, headed by Sanjay Kumar Jha of JDU, will not only seek explanations but also explore solutions to ensure that such disruptions do not occur again, sources said.TOI learnt that while some panel members themselves faced inconvenience due to sudden flight cancellations, others received calls detailing how the crisis derailed travel plans of thousands of passengers. Aviation Meltdown Escalates As IndiGo Cancels 400 Flights And Government Enforces Fare Controls “This is an unprecedented situation in the history of India’s aviation sector. Both the airlines and the regulator will have to explain why such a situation occurred and why they failed to anticipate it,” said a member of the panel.Another member said the episode has exposed deeper systemic issues of the aviation sector, including manpower shortages, strained crew-management systems and gaps in regulatory oversight.
