The runway independent aerial surveillance system will provide surveillance capabilities to Army units, with armoured piercing tank ammunition enhancing lethality of anti-tank ammunition.The 155mm Dhanush howitzers, which have been deployed along the borders with Pakistan and China, will enhance the artillery’s capabilities to engage targets at longer ranges in all terrains with enhanced lethality and accuracy. The desi guns, whose design is based on the Bofors howitzers, have already been inducted into the Army, as 114 guns were ordered a few years ago.For the IAF, the DAC has approved remotely piloted strike aircraft and overhaul of Su-30 aero engine aggregates to increase the service life of IAF’s mainstay combat aircraft. Remotely Piloted Strike Aircraft will enable undertaking offensive counter and coordinated air operations and provide stealth intelligence, surveillance and recognition activities.For the Indian Coast Guard, DAC accorded AoN for heavy-duty air cushion vehicles. All states/UTs, too, barring West Bengal, have chosen separate HLO timelines between April and Sept.The first 15 days of the 45-day HLO period are exclusively for self-enumeration, another first in the history of the census. Over the next 30 days, field visits will be undertaken by over 30 lakh enumerators. “We expect Bengal to also notify its HLO schedule soon,” said Narayan.The HLO phase will be followed by population enumeration in Feb next year. March 1, 2027, shall be the reference date for Census 2027, except for a few snow-bound areas. The questions for Phase-2 — which will include caste count — will be notified later, said the RGI.Asked why National Population Register (NPR) updation had been delinked from Census 2027, unlike the original plan for Census 2021, and if this was on account of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls exercise, the RGI ruled out any correlation between the two. TOI was the first to report on June 17, 2025, that NPR updation would not be undertaken alongside Census 2027.Narayan assured that individual data recorded during Census 2027 will be kept strictly confidential, as mandated by the Census Act. “It cannot be shared with any govt agency, accessed under RTI or produced before the courts. Only aggregated statistical data will be used for tabulation purposes,” he said.Census 2027 data will be collected through a mobile app, and a web portal will monitor and manage various activities of census and house listing, while block creation will be done through a web mapping application. Asked about the risk of respondents declaring a wrong caste to avail the benefit of reservation, Narayan clarified that individual information collected during the census is not meant to be used for any purpose. “Only aggregate statistical information is made public. NEW DELHI: In a clear message to newsrooms ahead of a packed election calendar, the Press Council of India (PCI) has asked print media to stick to “fair and objective reporting”, steer clear of “paid news”, and strictly avoid publishing exit polls until voting concludes, tightening the guardrails around election coverage.In two press releases issued on March 27, the Council laid out detailed dos and don’ts for reporting during assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry, along with bypolls in multiple states.Emphasising the role of the media in a democracy, the PCI said, “General Election is a very important feature of our democracy and it is imperative that the media transmits to the electorate fair and objective reports of the election campaign by the contesting parties.”The Council cautioned newspapers against slanted or exaggerated coverage, noting that “the newspapers are not expected to indulge in unhealthy election campaigns” or publish “exaggerated reports about any candidate/party.” It also flagged the risks of divisive reporting, advising the press to avoid content that may “promote feelings of enmity or hatred between people” on social or religious lines.A key focus of the advisory is curbing paid news.
