NEW DELHI: Cumulative seizures of poll inducements like illegal cash, liquor and drugs across poll-going states/UTs have crossed the Rs 400 crore mark, the EC said Thursday.”Since activation of the electronic seizure management system (ESMS) on Feb 26 till March 25, 2026, nearly Rs 409 crore worth of illicit inducements – including Rs 17.4 crore cash, 16.3 lakh litres of liquor worth Rs 37.7 crore, drugs worth Rs 167.4 crore, precious metals worth Rs 23 crore and other freebies worth over Rs 163.3 crore – have been seized,” an EC spokesman said.Sources said Tamil Nadu accounts for the largest share, with seizures worth Rs 152 crore. EC reviewed poll readiness on March 24 with officials and enforcement agencies. Over 5,173 flying squads have been deployed. Of 70,944 C-Vigil complaints between March 15-25, 96% have been resolved. Nordic leaders also reiterated their support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed and expanded UN Security Council. According to the Indian govt, the defence agreement will tap into investment opportunities, including 100% FDI being offered to Nordic defence firms in Indian defence industrial corridors. Modi said that with ambitious agreements like FTA and TEPA, both sides were ushering in a new golden era in relations. “We have decided to elevate the India-Nordic relationship to a green technology and innovation strategic partnership. Through this, we will combine Iceland’s geothermal and fisheries, Norway’s blue economy and Arctic, and the maritime and sustainability expertise of all Nordic countries with India’s scale, ensuring a better future for the entire world,” said the PM. “And by forging this unique strategic partnership between us, we will combine Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defence, Finland’s telecom and digital technology, and Denmark’s cybersecurity and health-tech, with India’s talent, to develop trusted solutions for the entire world,” he added. The PM also said an important pillar of the partnership was extensive research and innovation ties. For decades, drivers of commercial vehicles entering Bengal from Jharkhand said those words defined border crossings more than signboards or toll gates. Trucks slowed. Cash changed hands. Arguments invited threats, smashed rear-view mirrors and punctured tyres. Delays wrecked delivery schedules and ate into earnings. That grind has abruptly eased. Days after BJP assumed office in Bengal on May 9, the state govt issued a zerotolerance directive against “extortion nakas”. District magistrates were told to dismantle illegal collection points and prevent their return. Truckers said the result is visible already. Key crossings along NH-2 and adjoining state roads that once choked under bamboo barriers and unauthorised toll booths are now moving freely. Drivers transporting goods between Jharkhand, Bengal, the NorthEast and Bangladesh said harassment has dropped sharply over the past fortnight. Nearly 50,000 trucks move through Bengal every day, making the state a critical logistics hub connecting eastern India, NE and five transit points into Bangladesh. “Two types of unofficial levies were common in Bengal — Bhaipo tax and danda tax,” said Sajal Ghosh, general secretary of the Federation of Truck Operators Association in Bengal, referring to TMC MP and former CM Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee. “Bhaipo tax has vanished. We want danda tax wiped out completely too.” At Rupnarayanpur near Jharkhand’s Mihijam crossing, truckers said traffic now moves without roadside collection. “It all shut down after May 4,” said e-rickshaw driver Tapan Das. Drivers described payments at multiple points across Paschim Bardhaman and Purulia districts. “If you refused, they stopped and harassed you for hours till you paid. That has stopped,” truck driver Vishal Roy said. Truckers recalled highways lined with bamboo poles and enforcers. “Every few kilometres, bamboo barricades blocked the road,” said Ramesh, a driver resting at a dhaba near Tulin in Purulia. “Ask for a receipt, and they turn hostile. In a joint statement on Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi and Nordic leaders expressed concern over the Ukraine war, saying it continued to cause immense human suffering and have global consequences. “They will continue to support efforts towards the achievement of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy, based on the principles of the UN charter and of international law,” said the statement. The leaders also expressed deep concern over the situation in West Asia and its global ramifications and welcomed the ceasefire announced on April 8. “They also called for freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce through Strait of Hormuz, consistent with the provisions of UNCLOS,” it said. On Palestine, the leaders called on all parties to respect the ceasefire and uphold their obligations under international law. They emphasised the need for safe, sustained and unhindered humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza. NEW DELHI: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday hit out at leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, and dismissed charges of ‘crony capitalism’. On X, she listed out multiple welfare schemes and policies of the Modi govt and underlined that farmers, the poor, women, youth, and MSMEs are “at the core” of the governance structure. “We are focused on the welfare of common people,” she said in a social media post. She asserted that since 2014, Modi govt has served every sector and every section of society through its “policies and initiatives”. Earlier in the day, Rahul had said an economic storm is coming and “Ambani-Adani structure that govt built will come crumbling down”. “It’s sad that common people will have to suffer,” he alleged. Countering the charge, Sitharaman said: “If Congress and its netas cannot contribute positively to nation building, they should stop being obstructionists.
